Preseason rankings

Since our football team is tragic, I thought it would be nice to focus on the basketball team which is on an upward trend. Can't recall us being ranked higher than the 200s in Kenpom for quite some time. I think PSU has a chance to win the conference this year.

  1. Montana = 170
  2. PSU = 175
  3. No. Colorado = 199
  4. Eastern = 232
  5. Idaho = 243
  6. MSU = 249
  7. Sac = 271
  8. NAU = 280
  9. Idaho St = 286
  10. Weber = 303 (whoa - they're usually good)

Coburn now has a winning record - seems like the team has been trending upward over the last 2-3 seasons.

Northern Colorado looks strong too.

Nice little OT win to start off conference play!
It was something like our 4th win in Ogden in 30 years. Plus being down and Minot fouling out. Guys rallied, however. Great start, but can't lose the momentum at Pocatello this weekend, though. Need to get a win there, too. Big Sky road wins conference wide don't just happen.

2-0 in conference by the seat of our pants on the road.

Business at home and we need to take care of it.

We woke up just in time to steal it. Don't get paid for overtime, but if we can get a win, I'm all for it. Us and the two Montana schools went 2-0 to start conference play, but they were both playing at home. They both did beat Northern Colorado who was coming off the impressive win over Colorado (who looked really good at Arizona State). Conference road wins are tough so starting with two road wins is impressive.

Grizzlies lost to EWU and the Bobcats lost to Idaho, but the Vandals lost to the Grizzlies on Thursday. Viks the only team undefeated in conference play. Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona come to town this weekend. The Bears have been tough in recent years and own a win over Colorado. They split last weekend, making 16 3-pointers against Idaho State in a win, and only making one against Weber in a loss. NAU lost to both ISU and Weber last weekend.

Is it a great story for PSU's attendance that they drew 1,300 people for Sac State, or is it a surprising story that University of Portland hosted Oregon State and only drew 1,900? I figured with OSU playing a rare away game in Portland that the Chiles Center would have at least 4k fans. Granted OSU has not been good - they've lost the last several games to PSU/UP/UO.

1300 isn't a great attendance by D1 standards, but remember who we are and our place in the market. I'll be honest, it was great to see some energy in the building. Band playing, engaged folks in the student section, guy taking his shirt off to throw on a Viking shirt. Sure beats 600 people watching us murder George Fox. Plus, my wife's sensitive ears didn't hurt due to the PA bouncing off of mostly empty seats, and my watch indicated that we hit 100db, which certainly wasn't sustained noise and was probably on one of those two monster dunks near the end of the half. Duke we are not, but having watched this program for many years, take the small wins. Were we even at half capacity? Nope, but a few people seemed to notice what we did on the road to start conference play and showed up.

As for the game itself... Miller with the triple double, Minott with the 20/20 double double and Jaylin dropping 26 in the same game was pretty awesome to watch. Sac State won't exactly be making travel plans for mid to late March, but we did what we should have done and that makes really look forward to see what our ceiling is in conference play this season. Oh, and welcome to the Viking Pavilion Mike Bibby and Shaq's son. :-)
