President

GO VIKS!!!

Oh wait, wrong sub-forum. The NSF lady sure sounds impressive, but the Texas Tech guy sounds like athletics funds...hmmmmmm....

Going to do my research on these three. This will be big on the direction of the University. I do hope we get someone that's at least lukewarm about athletics. Let's be positive on second thought and hope for a President that's a huge fan of sports. Go Viks!

Hm, high caliber people, all of them. PSU has definitely beenb going somewhere under Bernstine, let's hope the selected candidate will continue his great work.

I only looked at the bios very superficially, but it seems like each candidate represents a particular type of leader:

NFS lady - the fundraiser

Baltimore - the researcher (look at his output)

Texas Tech - the mainstream president

This is obviously overly simplified. I need to do more research on the three, but all seem like they could be invaluable to PSU. Academics first of course, but I'd love a president who recognizes the importance of athletics for a school's reputation.

I'm pulling for one of the first two. Even though the third is at Texas Tech, and probably has a soft spot for athletics, his academic background doesn't fit into PSU's current and future focuses.

The NSF woman has a science and fundraising background which is the future of PSU.

Baltimore--He's a great fit because of his background in urban planning.

Texas Tech guy withdraws. http://www.pdx.edu/news/19358/

Hm. Jon Whitmore would have been great for athletics, but the other two can probably serve PSU better overall. Let's hope they care for sports at least enough to let others take care of it.

As long as this continues this way, no one will be left. All kidding aside I think this guy, despite his weird name, is the right fit. Urban planning, and the university serving city development are PSU strong points. If he can continue that growth, and increase fundraising capability, he will do well.

I wonder why candidates bother going so far only to bail out and stay in their old jobs. Bernstine did the same at West Virginia if I remember correctly.

I like Wim Wiewel (and his name). More impressive than his role at UB, which though urban seems too small to be comparable to PSU, is the fact that he was dean of the College of Urban Planning at the University of Illinois, Chicago. I think he will be an excellent pick for PSU. The Texas Tech guy seems not to have been very popular on his own campus, and the NSF lady...well call me gendered, but I somehow had the feeling she wouldn't be the right person to build up a athletics program...

Wim Wiewel, urban scholar, will lead PSU

I think we all need to be aware that athletics won't be the first thing on his plate when he arrives with the faculty status and such. However, as long as he doesn't cancel the Stott remodel, or put it on hold multiple years, I'll be happy.

PSU has such positive momentum right now, as long as he stays out of the way and doesn't hold anything up, I'll be happy for awhile.

PSU in Washington DC
It has been busy in Washington DC for PSU.

Incoming President Wim Wiewel visited the Oregon Congressional delegation on June 26, 2008. He sat down with all the members and their staff to introduce himself and to become familiar with our Representatives and Senators. He was accompanied by his wife, Alice Wiewel, who is currently the Director of University Facilities at Georgetown University.

The day was a successful introduction for President Wiewel where he was able to talk about his vision for PSU and how he can work closely with Oregon’s members of Congress to achieve those goals. This will be one of many visits to Washington, D.C. that the President will undertake during his tenure at PSU to make sure our federal agenda is progressing successfully on the Hill.

More recently, PSU Provost Roy Koch, Vice-Provost Bill Feyerherm, Dean Randy Hitz, Institute on Portland Metropolitan Studies Director Sheila Martin joined the government relations team in DC for a Legislative Summit for Urban Serving Universities. They had a chance to meet our congressional offices on the importance of urban serving university language remaining in the higher education act reauthorization. This critical measure could pass as early as this week.

I've posted this in a couple of other places but I was sure relieved to read this. We need a President who is a strong backer of athletics....
