Portland State pro day: 17 hopefuls work out for NFL scouts

Wednesday's pro day festivities at Portland State felt a little weird to Olaniyi Sobomehin. In 2008, Sobomehin, a PSU graduate, laid the groundwork for an eventual contract with the New Orleans Saints by impressing NFL scouts with a solid showing at Portland State's pro day. Now, four years later, the 6-foot-1 running back was back on the same field trying to strike gold again.

"I'm just really hoping to get myself in front of the scouts again and show them that I can play," he said. "I've been out for a couple of seasons so I'm trying to remind them who I am. ... It's kind of weird but it's comfortable."

Sobomehin was the oldest of the 17 NFL hopefuls who braved a cold, wintry March day for a shot at convincing one of the 14 scouts on hand that they could play at the next level. The majority of the group were Portland State players who wrapped up their eligibility last season. They were joined by Sobomehin, two other former Vikings football players, one former Vikings basketball player and three prospects from small colleges.

After being weighed and measured, players had a chance to be measured in the broad and vertical jumps, the bench press, the 40-yard dash, the 20-yard shuffle and the L-cone drill.

For Portland State's Dustin Waldron, a 6-foot-5 offensive lineman, who had already taken part in the NFL Combine and is projected as a fourth- to seventh-round draft pick, the day was a chance to improve some of his numbers. He did just that, increasing his vertical jump by five inches (31 inches) and boosting his broad jump by one (8-foot-8). After impressing scouts with 29 repetitions at 225 pounds in the bench press at the combine, he sat out the event Wednesday. He also seemed confident he had improved his times in the 20-yard shuffle and L-cone drill.

"I think everything went well," he said. "It felt good and the feedback was that I did well."

Perhaps the day's most impressive numbers were put up by Vikings defensive tackle Myles Wade. Weighing in at 311 pounds, Wade shattered his personal marks in the bench press and vertical jump with 42 reps and 35.5 inches. Wade said he has been working out every day in an effort to improve and convince NFL scouts his freak athleticism can translate to the NFL.

"Even though my numbers may have shown that I had an awesome day, the drive inside of me is telling me that's it still not good enough," he said.

Wade said he will participate in the NFL's Super Regional Combine March 30-31 at Ford Field in Detroit.

While Waldron and Wade were on the radar of most scouts, one player who appeared to help himself was linebacker Ryan Rau. With a pro day-best broad jump of 10-3, 29 reps on the bench press and impressive quickness in the agility drills, Rau may have earned himself the prize everyone came looking for: one more chance to play football under the lights.

I was at Pro Day. Wade was a beast on the bench, and looked good on the jump. I wasn't at the vert event, but I heard from friends that he did really well there.

Rau also did really well. Waldron looked a little slow at some points, but still did well overall.
