PSU FOOTBALL

Barnum said "He was happy to hold Idaho to two field goals".They did not hold them.Idaho is a sorry team and PSU is worse. Is Touchdown Charlie the only receiver that can catch, get open? As sorry as Idaho is ,once again there was no defensive pressure on there QB and the secondary was not there. Most of PSU's offensive plays were busted as usual, because everytime the ball was hiked Davis had pressure. Then you brought Eason in and told him to run the ball, like he's a running back. Barnum is going to get some one injured. It is what it is PSU is GARBAGE!! THE COACHING STAFF IS TOO!!! You should post this because I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way!!THIS TEAM IS NEVER EVEN COMPETITIVE.BARNUM HAS RUINED THESE YOUNG MENS SPIRIT.GUYS THAT HAVE PLAYED IN STRUCTURED PROGRAMS NO THIS AIN'T IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel sorry for the young men that had choices and could have went to other schools.IF YOU HAD A CHANCE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN FOOTBALL,YOU'RE SQUASHING IT AT PSU!

@LovmAn60. Welcome to the forum. I trust that you have joined this forum because you want to support PSU football. If you have read several of the posts you will see that there are in fact varying levels of frustration with the program. You are not alone in your concerns.

However, one thing you will not see is any of us undermining the program and suggesting that current or future athletes abandon PSU. We are not garbage! It has been a challenging few years and most of us would agree that it is time for a leadership change at the coaching level. But we share those frustrations in hopes of future improvement. Our goal is to build up not tear down.

Change is needed but that will only come out of constructive criticism that hopefully PSU admin listen to and respond to. Until a change is made with our football leadership we will continue to struggle. And yes it is too bad our young men have to live with that. But let's keep at least a tiny light of hope alive that the future can be improved... :thumb:

We have no money, no stadium, and honestly, no hope. Unless Barney pulls a Gary Anderson and walks away, PSU can't afford to buy-out his contract and hope to attract a quality coach with what would be leftover to pay them. We just need to hope that the "youth movement" will pay off in the next couple of years. We are seeing improvement, through 5 games only one blocked punt.

@LovmAn60 has a point. If you are a kid who loves football and has lost faith in the program, what do you do? If it were you, who would you talk to about options you might have? Maybe a teammate. Maybe a parent. Maybe your high school coach. I suspect some of the kids on the team are thinking and talking to people they trust about what options they might have. It is only a reasonable thing to do. Given our record over the last several years and what appears to me a coaching staff with limited skills, I would not be surprised if we have freshmen and sophomore defections before next season.

To all PSU fans.I apologize for my rant. You are right the team/program is not garbage!I was just frustrated with the performances.Yes I'd like to see better results, but I realized that berating the team/coaching staff is not the way! From now on I'll be more positive and more supportive of the program. GO VIKS!

It's all good fella, We all are frustrated. With me having a kid on the team and I know has a alot of talent who I would love to watch play I do understand the business hopefully it will get better really soon. (That's for the team as a whole). GOVIKS!!!!!

I just wonder when do they call this season a loss and start getting ready for next year. I understand the situation the seniors are in, but if we play them the bulk of the minutes this year, how does that prepare the other kids for next year (when Barnum is pointing to us being "really good")? It just seems like we are going to be in the same boat next year, with limited starters returning, but a bunch of kids that have looked good in practice. Practice experience is not game experience. You are not going to get used to being hit by a first team All-Big Sky linebacker unless you are getting hit by a first team All-Big Sky linebacker.

Our two year anniversary of the last conference win is coming up. Maybe it is time to see a little bit of what next year is going to be like. Or maybe that scares the hell out of Barnum.

Smart thing to do is get all your players ready for next year. With that being said there's still a bunch of games left. Most coaches won't play young guys in until the last few games. I will be happy with my son getting alot time when they come to sac state.

Most coaches have won more than one conference game in two years. I think it has to be next weekend. Barnum needs to send a message to the alums during homecoming that basically says "I know the last couple years have been rather lean. But here is a sample of what you can expect next year, the year that I've been pointing to for awhile. Just stick with me and let me see it through."

Homecoming is always a big game, made even bigger if you are trying to keep the alums around during dismal times. It basically comes down to are we playing the seniors just because they are seniors or because it gives us the best chance to win. I think it is the former and not the latter.

@lovman60...I have to be careful here or I will eat my own words to you...

If I hear us keep talking about our "bright future" because of our young kids I'm going to scream. This is year four with Barnum and his recruits (more if you consider he recruited when he was the OC). Is year 5 the magic number? Year 6?

In all due respect @bigsky I would hope our alumni are too smart to fall for the "just stick with me and see it through". We are not talking about improvements that are just taking a bit longer than we hoped. We are talking about no improvements. We are talking about getting worse every year.

If there is a message to the alumni it needs to come from the AD to tell us they are committed to football and committed to making changes in the future to ensure we improve. Enough said and enough unspoken to give us some hope to dig out of this hole. :ohno:

I'm adding on to my last post and I know I am beating the drum of a coaching change but darn it, leadership makes all the difference. Let's consider two examples. We've gone almost two years since we last defeated a Div1 opponent. That victory was against UC Davis.

Two weeks after that game UC Davis fired their coach (record of 2-9, 2-9, 3-8) and started fresh. His first year (2017) the new coach went 5-6 and lost 3 close games. This year they are 3-1, beat San Jose State, only lost to Stanford 30-10, and are currently ranked #16 in the country.

That's called the tale of two programs going the opposite direction. UC Davis didn't need 5 years or new recruits or time for young guys to grow up. They needed new proven leadership. Come on Viking Admin. Do something bold and shock us all. I'll keep saying it...hire Speckman or hire Casey.

I haven't posted in a LONG time, but i have to vent too. This is getting too much for me...

Tim Walsh leaves and we hear Jerry Glanville is going to bring the NFL to the Park Blocks and resurrect the program! Doesn't work out and he's fired a few years later...

They hire Burton who is going to turn things around and instill an excitement to the program. That doesn't work out and he's fired...

They bring on Barnum and BarneyBall is amazing... for one year. Now he appears to be not long for this job.

Are people calling for Barnum's firing thinking that PSU just made a bad hire... three times in a row? Or can people admit that there are bigger problems with the program than just a head coach?

A couple of days ago, Canzano had Derek Anderson on his show and he asked Anderson how he knew that Gary Anderson would not last at Oregon State, and Anderson answered by saying that Gary Anderson did not have the personnel to run what he wanted to run at OSU, yet he still pressed on like he had them. I think that summed up what has happened here. We were ranked #13 heading in to the 2007 season so Walsh did not leave the cupboard bare. Yet Glanville chose to go run and shoot out the gate with the ball control kids Walsh had and failed. Then Burton came in and tried to go pistol with the run and shoot kids Glanville recruited (remember Hubel being called "Big Bird" because he couldn't run?) and that failed. Burton could recruit but couldn't coach so you bring in anyone with some knowledge of X's and O's and they would be successful which is what happened with Barnum. Having a playoff year should give you a boost in recruiting, yet strangely that didn't happen here. Some strange offensive concept called "Barny Ball" and now, some strange defensive concept that I don't really know what it is. Both are gimmicks and, while you may win at first, it is hard to win once opponents figure it out. Chip Kelly's gimmick at Oregon is old now. He was praised as a genius with the Ducks yet can't win at UCLA because it isn't fresh anymore.

Two things stand out from Burton's teams. They made a lot of stupid penalties and their offense was very predictable.

Jump forward to today. This team still makes stupid penalties and their offense is still predictable.

I was okay with Burton, except that from my knowledge (my daughter dated a player) he was telling one kid one thing, and another something completely different. That may be really common and some coaches are better at it than others. The other thing about Burton.....at least we were in some games. This team is not even competitive.

Tim Walsh knew how to coach and recruit and build a program...a proven track record. I could never understand the Glanville hire someone at the end of his career used to amazing resources at his control coming to Portland? If I remember things I think he was trying to rebuild a reputation or something.
Burton brought some excitement but no proven record being a successful head coach. We hire Barnum who we can get cheap but with no proven record being a successful head coach.

There is a theme here. We need to look for a coach with a proven track record building up a program. Given our budget that needs to be someone who probably proved themselves at a lower level.

Maybe we keep them only a few years if they get the attention of others. But worst case we replace him with someone else following the same criteria. A good proven coach will keep the success of a prior program going. Its not brain surgery here.

Step#1 - Find a head coach from a lower division program who proved he can build a program
Step#2 - Make sure they have a passion to build another program at the next level
Step#3 - Give them a 3 year contract and stay out of the way
