PSU must be self sufficient by next year

I guess we could be bitching about this happening here: http://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2013/12/portland_states_football_progr.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Portland State president Wim Wiewel has directed that the PSU football team become self-sufficient by the 2014-15 academic year.

PSU spokesman Mike Lund said the move is one of a series of cuts the university is making to deal with a $15 million financial shortfall.

Lund said the football program received approximately $800,000 from the university’s general fund in 2013-14. The football budget is $3.85 million.

Lund said it will become more important for the Vikings to sell season tickets and increase sponsorship and marketing, but said there should be no concern about the future of the program.

“The obvious conclusion people jump to is, ‘You guys are going to drop football,’” Lund said. “No. This secures the program. Now it’s not reliant on the university. It’s on us to run the program efficiently and generate more money.”
Sounds like the PSU students will be seeing a fee hike in the near future. Can’t be too surprised as the Vikes have struggled to get fans to the games. The Vikes averaged 5,947 in 2011, 5,957 in 2012 and 5,148 this past season. Clearly selling tickets will not dig them out of that $800k hole.

Only option is two FBS games a year. I doubt that Portland State will ever be a good draw. Last year they played only Cal and then two NAIA's, can't make much that way drawing 5,000 a game.
By the way we are taking that same route next year open at Cal, then Menlo, Eastern Oregon and Weber at home. The difference is that we will draw better at home, especially if we win at Cal which is possible.

Yup, money games are key for everyone. If the Pac12 decides to do away with play down games I think you will see some more football programs fall by the wayside (probably even ours).

Even though that article is football centric, that $800k went for all PSU athletics. PSU is set to break ground on an expansion and renovation of their hoops facility so they should see a slight bump in revenue for those sports (m & w hoops, vball) due to additional seating capacity and better amenities. Meanwhile we fail to get a new events center going so we will continue to lose money on men’s hoops. Well done Gonzo, well fvcking done.
