PSU @ Nevada (08.31.2018)

Not sure of any halftime adjustments, we seemed to get worse as time went by. Next week will be ugly. Missing the run and shoot.

Reno Gazette Journal: "Portland State’s defense is a sieve, but you play against the competition in front of you...."

I was not impressed with this new defense. It seemed to me that there is only one safety back and the defenders all play tight. Once the Nevada receiver's ran past the defenders, there was no help because the lone safety could not catch up to cover. Many instances in the first half, Nevada's receivers had our guys beat but just dropped the ball. Once they started holding on to it, game over.

On offense, too many dropped passes of our own. Also Alexander seemed indecisive on his reads and held the ball way too long. Eason only attempted one pass. I just feel we are tipping our hand (when Alexander is in there, we pass. When Eason is in there, we run, regardless of the score). Barnum's offense needs a two-dimensional quarterback, something we still haven't had since Kuresa.

From Ken Goe's, Issues and Answers in OLive (will need to scroll down past the Ducks and Beavers)

Yes, this year the city is watching, at least the first part and I think Goe is right on with his comments about Barnum. This isn't the showing Barnum wanted in the first game, comparing where the program was his first year.

Nevada has a pretty potent offense and is probably going to a bowl this season, but we have no business giving up 70+ points to a middle of the pack Mountain West program. Where was that secondary speed that Saadat was praising after the second scrimmage?

The offense is quite concerning at this point. Fast start, but other than Taumoepeau, we didn't have much going on out there. Five of our first downs were via Nevada penalties, so we only really had twelve that we generated, and we only reached the red zone twice. Add in the 3/19 on third down, and it was a pretty awful night of us trying to move the ball.

At least our kicking looks to be better.

Next week is going to be ugly, but hopefully we can clean up some of the errors (dropped passes, penalties, etc) that we saw last night.

Watching some of the Big Sky games, and what is concerning me is that Nevada really is not that much faster than most teams in our conference. Faster both ways, offense and defense. They'd hit the corner on the run and take off. They'd beat the DB off the line and go. Our offense could never turn the corner on Nevada's defense. Watching Weber, watching Davis, even Idaho State last night, all looked quick.
