PSU @ Sac State

LOL. Quote of the week: "It's looking so sloppy because both teams are trying so hard." Announcer. Dear God he can't be serious. I nearly fell out of my chair. 42-38 PSU with 14:01 left. It's falling apart for the Hornets. Poor passing, poor shooting, poor decisions...just poor all around...

46-40 PSU with 11:01 left. Hornets need to go on a run if they want to win this...that and stop having their bounce passes stolen or hitting their own feet...

Sounds like last night's Bear Creek @ Lodi GBB game last night. While the usual horrible officiating was a factor (a trey was disallowed AFTER the next basket was scored), it was the quarter and a half that Lodi left in the locker room (first bucket of the second half didn't come until halfway through the fourth quarter) that lost the game on the home court. BC won 47-45 in OT. Your last sentence, SD, accurately describes that woeful Flame second half. Sure, our girls finally woke up as we hope the Hornets will, but long periods of bad decisions will kill your chances at a win, regardless of level or gender.

Interesting take SH. I still can't believe the Hornet passing is so poor this late in the season. It's pretty pathetic to be honest. Thank God most of these guys are graduating after this season. I'd have to poke my eyes out if I have to watch this terrible passing another year.

51-46 PSU with 7:39 left. Eller with a traditional 3 point play a few seconds ago. That was quickly followed by poor ball handling by Dickson that resulted in a steal. He did recover and blocked the ensuing layup. Unfortunately it's still PSU ball.

60-50 PSU lead with 3:56 left. It's desperation time for the Hornets. Time to throw up some 3's and hope they go in. The Hornets have gotten completely schooled in fundamentals (rebounding, passing) tonight. I hope they learned something.

Hornets in the double bonus. Dickson to the line for 2. He makes them both. 53-60 PSU with 3:30 left.

76-62 PSU final. The Hornets opened up the game with a nice run which they soon squandered. The 2nd half was just a complete embarrassment (piss poor passing and rebounding). They can kiss any chance at the BSC tournament seed goodbye with this loss. They will be playing for pride from here on out. Still surprised the Hornets are running their base sets and fouling when they are down by 13 with under a minute to go. Not to take anything away from PSU in this game but I expected a much better performance from the Hornets. If it wasn't for Stone Brewery and the delicious beers they brew, I would have never made it through this game. Better luck next time.

Come to think of it, another problem my JV Flames had was an inability to hit free throws. One girl in particular airballed one and bricked two after she was fouled on a trey. (Which, of course, given the final spread, would have won the game.)

Was this a problem for the Hornets this game? I'm amazed at how many parallels there can be between different levels of this game....

I agree SHA, PSU was way more athletic than the Hornets, but that no excuse for giving up offensive boards directly under the basket time and time again. Also no excuse for the poor bounce passes either.

SH, the Hornets didn't get to the line much (At least not in the first 30 minutes of the game). After they got an 11 point lead by attacking along the baseline with Eller and Dickson, Katz went back into the perimeter passing game that the Hornets have played in for much of the season. I have no problem with it so long as there are cuts to the basket and other aggressive moves to get into the paint and create action. None of this happened and the Hornets constantly settled for an off balance shots and low percentage shots. This may be due to the lack of talent, but I think it had more to do with the game plan. As a side note, PSU did have a defender who rejected almost every shot he defended so I am sure that had an impact. I just wish Katz could have attacked him to try and draw some fouls.

SD, I just saw on the UOP board that Tiger fans are saying pretty much what you just did. Is a failure to get guard penetration an epidemic in high school and college hoops this year?

I think it has more to do with a strong emphasis on the 3 ball more than anything else. Why play for the layup when you can have players launch a 3 pointer? Terrible odds yes, but that has become more evident these past few years.

The problem I have with that idea, SD (which has probably occurred to you as well) is that overreliance on the trey, like a quarterback's overreliance on middle- to deep-range balls, results in an extension of the defense because until there's some threat of another weapon (dumping the ball in to a post player or a slashing guard in basketball or a decent running game in football), there's no need for a defense to worry about it. I believe that's at least partially to blame for lousy bomb numbers. If a defender's in your face because s/he doesn't have to worry about your even attempting the interior game, you're not going to hit very many bombs.
