The Washington Huskies are expecting some attempt at redemption on the part of Portland State's Phil Nelson when the two teams meet in Seattle, 5 p.m. Sunday (FSN).
"I guarantee," UW coach Lorenzo Romar tells the Seattle Times, "he'd like to get 40 when they play us."
Adds Isaiah Thomas: "He's definitely going to want to light it up."
Nelson played at Washington in 2006-07 before transferring to the Vikings, saying he didn't see eye-to-eye with Romar and coaches. Translation: He wanted more playing time and less harping about his offensive game.
Nelson told a UW blogger this week that, "that would be great (to score 40), but I'm not going to put up 45 shots to get there. If it comes, it comes. If it doesn't, it doesn't. I'm not going to force anything just to try and show them up."
Nelson averages 25 minutes per game and 10.1 points. He's shooting .356 from the floor, .333 on 3-pointers. It's not quite the prolific scoring that many had expected from the 6-7 Nelson, but coach Ken Bone likes the way he has contributed to the 7-1 Vikings. He has been bothered in the past two games with flu-like symptoms.
• Meanwhile, former Portlander and Aloha High center Joe Wolfinger averages only 10 minutes for the Huskies, playing in only six of eight games for UW (5-3).
