Hi, my name is Saxon Baird and I am a staff writer for The Rearguard. I am writing an article on Glanville and the dismal record this year.I just wanted to get some thoughts from the fans on why you think the team didn't fair so well this year. In addition, I would like to know your thoughts on next year and why you feel that way.

Hope to hear from you soon...

go viks...

I think the thread called "Jerry Glanville poll" is a perfect example of the sort of info you'll want.

My opinion, and I admit that I know little about football x's and o's, is that the record was due partially to Coach Glanville coaching a team of players that he didn't recruit. They were brought to PSU to run Coach Walsh's offense. Also, injuries killed them this year. How many teams had to have 3rd and 4th string quarterbacks and running backs starting games? I thought the season went well considering all that.

My hope is that next year he will be able to bring in some players that fit Mouse Davis' offense better. On the bright side, I would assume that you could bring in some high power offensive players in the future. What reciever or quarterback wouldn't want to play in an offense that led the nation in passing. Also, I don't know of a freshman quarterback who had a beginning of a career like Drew Hubel. That is something to look forward to for the coming years.

I would agree with jas for the most part. Though I think the defense was the real problem last season and not the injuries. The viks offense played well enough to beat every team that they played this year with the exception of Mcneese state.

Okay, I guess I'll admit that scoring 68 points and losing might indicate a problem on the defensive side of the ball.

Maybe I'm just trying to block that out of my memory.

Defense was the major issue due to the following reasons:

1) Players that were brought in for a 4-3 were playing in a 3-4. Basically, we were short on guys who could play the specialized linebacker positions in JGs defense.

2) Injuries. Not really an excuse in football because they happen, but this was an even bigger issue due to reason #1.

3) The Run & Shoot. JG had made the comment that his guys at UH would play no more than 81 defensive plays per game. We had defensive guys in some cases playing over 100 plays per game. The Run & Shoot put up numbers on the scoreboard, but the nature of the offense limits the breaks for defensive units with quick scoring drives and increases the number of defensive plays due to stopping the clock with incomplete passes.
