Question for Wildcat Forever...or football gurus

There is a new rule in the NCAA that allows a player who has lost 2 years due to injury to get one back. As far as Mr. Johnson's situation goes, he played as a true freshman at 21 years old off of his mission. The following year, his true sophomore season, he suffered a season ending dislocated elbow in the first game that tore all the ligaments and tendons in his elbow. Because no red-shirt was used he was able to use his original red-shirt and got that year back. He then played his red-shirt sophomore and junior seasons the following 2 years. His senior season he had a season ending knee injury in the 4th game and lost the whole year. Because he lost 2 years to injury the NCAA granted him a medical red-shirt. The rules state that if you lose 2 years to injury you can gain one back. In order to be eligible for a red-shirt a player can not participate in more than 4 games in the season. Anything more than 4 and they are ineligible for a red-shirt. Hope that clears everything up.

That Johnson kid was a hell of a player. :!: ;)

I wish we still had him on the team, to provide leadership for our young defense! 8-)

Possible small correction: whether it's the fourth of third game of the season may depend on whether it is a twelve game season or an eleven game season.

2 years ago, the Senior leadership was THERE, and that was the glue that held the team together.....just a fact.

last year, leadership was hit and miss, captains were not engaged, team was not focused. very frustrating when the HC tells a non-captain to 'go fire up the captains and tell them to get their heads out of their arse'....should have made that player a captain.....whoever leads by example, performs at a consistently high level, and abides by ALL the team rules....should be a captain. being a senior doesn't make you a captain, it just makes you a senior.............period.

First talking about captains I would put some of the blame on Coach Mac, we didn't need 9 captains. Nine is just too many captains to have on a team for them to be effective. If you look at the team last year there probably were 4 captains that stepped up and were the leaders.

Whoever this player is that you are talking about that Coach Mac "asked" to fire up the captains probably didn't deserve to be captain because the players voted for the team captains. Which means he probably didn't lead by example or follow rules. Don't get me wrong this player had one good game, but one game doesn't make a season.

With all due respect Wildcat 4ever, I know you have done some good things for the program and the purple pak, but you don't need to tare down the team to build your son up as a player, and if you feel that you still need to cut down the team, just get off this board, and stick to the University of Hawaii message boards.

Let's give credit where credit is due, and keep our suggestions for improvement in perspective! Despite the team failure to live up to 2008's record-breaking performance, they still managed one of the top five all time seasons in the history of Weber State football!

With all due respect, catdad, I viewed wildcat4ever's comments as constructive criticism, not an attack. Your response is a bit over the top, because it personalizes our team challenges in a way that hurts the program and does not help the kids or the coaches solve problems.

The differences in performance between the 2008 and the 2009 teams clearly include less effective team leadership and have been substantiated by current and former players themselves. This is not remarkable! They are only kids and are still learning. That's why they are there! Team leadership may have been lacking in 2009, but the incredible improvement in young defensive player football smarts from game one to the end of the season is remarkable and bodes well for 2010!

HOWEVER, as much as I would like to see the emergence of more mature and focused player leadership for 2010, we should not forget the devastating coaching losses suffered at the end of the 2008 season. Some of the coaches are almost as young and immature as the players, and Mac cannot be expected to ride herd on the fractious youngsters as he might have in past years. I like 'em all, players and coaches, but those are the facts on the ground!

Every mother crow's baby crow may be the blackest, but we can do better than brag about our baby crows - or disparage others! The bottom line is that we all care about the kids and the program have the highest expectations for their behavior and performance in all respects. They clearly need to improve for 2010. What can we do to help them help themselves?!???

Native, I think that you are spot on :!: :!:
A leader is not a leader because he was voted to the position. The leader is the one who works hard, plays hard, and then when the need arises, he or she will step up, take control, and make their presence known.
If the "elected" leader is not doing their job, the real leader will need some encouragement to step up because they respect the position. They feel that it is their job to support the leader, but will give encouragement or will do the leading when the situation calls for it.
Many of us on the board feel that the football team underachieved this past season, however, we are not here to point fingers or call someone out for poor performance. We all are doing our best to show support and give some perspective as to why the team - in our opinion - underachieved and what may be done to help avoid that situation in the future. WE ALL ARE PROUD OF WHAT THE TEAM ACCOMPLISHED THIS PAST SEASON AND GIVE FULL SUPPORT TO THE FUTURE!!!!!!

Catdad, I can see your frustration. The coaching staff was decimated at the end of 2008 and in most instances their replacements were not ready for the job or should never have been looked at as a candidate. But thats part of the game, and we gotta go on. Unfortunately, the team hit some rough spots and lost a couple of games that should have been definite wins. Weber was a botched snap and a poor play call away from 9 wins. No matter, and this is purely my opinion, there were way to many team captains last year and some definite mediocre coaching (some serious favortism happening), but all we can do is move on and build off of the successes achieved by last seasons team. Go Cats... I'll see you all on the 3rd...

Sorry guys sometimes i guess i just let things get to me a little more than they should. However I still believe you should never cut someone down to build someone up.

Hopefully leaders will step up weather they are captains or not, You could never have too many Tim Toone's on a Football Team

Agreed... Tim Toone is going to be not only tough to replace as a WR or KR/PR but as a leader. He not only lead by example but would step up and get people back in line when he had to. He also is a friend with everyone. In my opinion, after hiring Rahe, it was Graybeals best move getting him to Weber.
