Randy Rahe era, at a glance

About 5 years ago, Just Enough Jerry told boosters that he and Randy had a 5 year plan to reach the sweet 16.

Are we any closer to reaching that Sweet 16 goal than we were 5 years ago? I don't think we are and it has a lot to do with our poor OOC schedule and record. You have to get better than a 15 or 16 seed to make that a reality. You have to get those close ones against Buffalo, Denver and Pepperdine. I think if we play all of those games over right now, we blow each of those schools out. Those 3 close losses (Randy played the prevent offense in each) will probably be the difference between a 13 and a 15 or 16.

We need to figure out how to get clicking just a little quicker. We get no help from the rest of our league. The Big Sky this year is starting to look like a book shelf. Weber at one end, Idaho State at the other and a big mess in between.

I was planning on next season being down but after seeing what Harding is capable of and the addition of Chapman, we might not lose a beat. Randy deserves tons of credit for reloading instead of rebuilding. From Lillard to Bamforth to tresnek and Berry to Joel and Senglin: each year we lose substantial talent and have great talent in the wings ready to step up. The only things I would change about about coach Rahe would be 1. The excuses 2. The prevent offense 3. The home schedule 4. The 6 week trial period to learn the offense.

Next year's BSC will be quite different, probably much better. Many schools are adding quality big men to their rosters. Montana, Weber, ISU, and UNC have already added big men who are as good or better than anything in the Sky this year. Although it is not that hard to do, next years OOC schedule already looks better. I am optimistic about this year and more so for next year.

The question I have been dying to ask the forum is, has coach Rahe improved over the time he has been at WSU? I am a optimist and would like to think that he is a better coach now than his first year at WSU.

He won the conference his first season and has continued to win the conference, or finish near the top, every year since (minus the 14-15 season). There really isn't much room for improvement when it comes to conference play. If fact, success has probably become easier as the conference has gradually become worse. Looking at OOC play I don't see much improvement, but he hasn't really gotten any worse either. But there's a ton of room for improvement there, which is the frustrating thing when we don't see improvement.

My question is this: Can you attribute conference success during the Rahe era more to Rahe's coaching or more to the fact that Weber has superior tradition, facilities, resources, and support? In other words, would most other competent coaches have the same success here simply because it's Weber St?

That is hard to say. I do believe another coach could come into Weber and be successfull. Weber is fertile college basketball soil. That does not make Rahe a bad coach though. I also think getting rid of coach Rahe would be a mistake because the next coach could be worse just as easily as could be better, and I am not willing to take that risk.

I wonder if what is holding us back is stipends for our athletes. I could definitely be wrong about that though. Rahe continues to recruit well without them.

There are many inputs that contribute to winning.

It has been a few years. I am not sure the exact source but I know we were hitting up the legislature after USU got their payday.

I remember reading this article, but I wasn't aware this was a done deal. I hope that it is.
