Ranking

In fairness to Em, he's put together a good top 25. The only glaring team on his list is Fordham at #6... no chance.

He is the only poll I've seen with JMU #1. I watched them last weekend and thought "damn, that is a good football team." I also like that he has Portland State, Eastern, and Southern Utah ranked, but not Montana or Montana State.

Even as an Eastern fan, I struggle to look at our games thus far and label us as any better than a 13 like we are in his poll. We've got a lot of upside and can improve quite a bit, but as of now, 13 is about right.

Portland State has probably the best FCS win of the season thus far over a good Washington State team on the road. Any 5-1 team with a win like that deserves recognition.

Appreciate the sentiment but enough with the sandbagging. EWU is the class of the league and I have no idea how Beau Baldwin has not been offered a mega-million dollar contract with a FCS team.

Rumor has it that he did make the final short list at Oregon State last year before they went with Anderson. Imagine Adams at Oregon and Baldwin at OSU. That would have been interesting (and I don't think the Eagles would have missed a beat).

You're right, Baldwin was high on OSU's list, but I think everyone went by the wayside when Anderson jumped into the mix.

I was a little surprised Boise State didn't make a move on Baldwin when Peterson left for UW. I think they opted for a safer choice in Harsin, who had BSU ties. I know UNLV had a lot of interest, but Baldwin wasn't interested in them.

I think you're overrating EWU. We're pretty good, but we have a lot of deficiencies. The Eastern teams we've fielded the last couple of years haven't been as good as the ones the came in previous years. For whatever reason, it is borderline impossible to find good FCS defensive players on the West Coast, and we're a victim of that. You guys are victims of that as well, although I think Portland State's defense is still better than Eastern's.

If we played on Saturday, I'd call it a 50/50 game in Cheney and make Portland State 7 point favorites in Portland. It might take 6 hours and end 79-72.

Heading in to today as far as the FCS rankings go, the teams close to us, mainly Eastern Kentucky and McNeese both have easy games that they should win. Two teams ahead of them, Richmond and Fordham have some tough games with Richmond playing #6 James Madison and Fordham playing at Lehigh. We have a sizable margin over #15 Harvard who plays a tough Princeton team today. Youngstown State, who is behind Harvard, has a game with Southern Illinois and William and Mary has a rival game with Hampton, which could go either way.

Simply put, we win, we should continue to move up. We lose and we may not lose too much, depending on the margin of loss.

Rose to 106 from 110 in the Sagarin ranking this morning (Sunday, 10/25). Southern Utah at 104...

#11 among FCS schools, #2 in the Big Sky behind Southern Utah. Interesting side note, the Beavers are #91. 8-)

So, #4 (James Madison) lost to #11 (Richmond) AND #6 (South Dakota State) lost to #22 (Northern Iowa) yesterday, SO... we'll be #11/12? on Monday?

Latest Sagarin has us #99, 8th in FCS and just ahead of Southern Utah for the top spot in the Big Sky. Just for giggles, the Beavers are #95. There may be no proof that we are the best team in Oregon, but we are closing in on being second best.

We're 10th in STATS, with one first place vote. :o

I don't know how long this will last, but right now the national stats have certainly caught the eye of the Oregonian. We're getting close to daily coverage for the first time in years. The run of Xavier's column helps. It also helps that OSU is just ordinary these days, with UO struggling. It will probably continue as long as we're on the road to the playoffs. We need UNC and at least one of the next two. Over at AGS all the talk is about "Wow! They're legit! Who are they?!"

The latest GPI rankings are out. This is a true indicator in determining at large teams. Keep in mind the Ivy League and the SWAC do not participate in the playoffs.

So, looks like we've jumped to #11 in both the Stats FCS poll. Eastern is #18. Others: Montana #17, SUU is #20, AND NAU is #24. MORE interesting is the Coaches' poll. Again, we're #11, but look at the BSC:

Montana #17
SUU #18
EWU #19
and NAU #20!

If the Griz beat MSU I predict Montana will make the playoff field over PSU if the Viks lose at EWU. And the odds are better than 50-50 for the Griz to be selected over PSU if the Viks beat EWU. A stadium full of 25,000 fans is the primary selection criteria.

Which is short sighted because the Montana fans will always come back. It would be much better in the long term to generate some buzz at smaller programs to help grow the fan bases.

NO!!! This can't happen. From someone who is still pissed about 2006, no, they can't take this season away from us. They owe us. Back in 2006, they said they took Montana State over us only because they beat us head to head. Well, this year we beat Montana head to head, that should mean something. No, any scenario that has them going in over us is just wrong. They messed up in 2006, they owe us this one.

I don't think there is any scenario based on football that you could pick UM over PSU. PSU has played a much tougher schedule than Montana and beat them head to head. PSU has beaten a Pac 12 school on the road. There is no way for Montana to get 8 wins. I just don't see how you can deny PSU. they need to erase any doubt by beating Eastern on Saturday

posted this on another forum....

I just listened to an interview with PSU AD Mark Roundtree during halftime of the PSU- Pacific Lutheran basketball game. He said we have put in bids to host the first, second and quarterfinal rounds. Our current record gives us a very strong chance to make the tournament in at least the second round of eight, but of course that was up to the selection committee.

He said the FCS and Big Sky officials he had talked to, say "Mark, we really really really like your resume."

He said if he was in the room, the question he wanted to ask was...
Who else in the entire FCS had two wins against FBS teams?
Who else has defeated 4 ranked teams ( he added a win on Saturday would give us 5)?
Raise your hand if any of you can fit into that group.... Nobody else in the country can say that.

The consensus of the majority of posters on Any Given Saturday and Champion Subdivision Football forums is that win or lose on Saturday, PSU is an ironclad lock on a playoff position because our two FBS wins against Wazzoo and North Texas just cannot be ignored.

I hope they are right.
