Re: Free tickets for home game

I'm seeing a lot of people bitching about the free tickets for the home opener on Saturday. Having seen the vouchers for the free tickets, it does say "This voucher good for two free tickets courtesy of Coca Cola"

So you know, I'm not a genius by any stretch of the imagination, but that seems to tell me that Coca Cola made a donation and paid for the tickets that are being given out.

Then again, I might be crazy, so who knows?

Coca Colo bought so many tickets for the game so in certain sections of the Stadium the tickets are free if you get them for those sections.

It's funny that no one seemed to complain when sponsors bought tickets for fans during the CIT game a few years ago. Why is it such a bad thing now? The tickets are still being bought does it really matter who buys them?

I've got no problem at all with free tickets, especially if it gets people there who otherwise wouldn't attend. But it does bother me a little that I purchased season tickets when they're just giving tickets away. But I'll live with it. I'm trying to look at it as a donation and a show of support more than anything.

Im sure it's only for this game, so people will have to buy thier own tickets for the next 4

A few sponsors just felt this game was really big and wanted to do what they could to get people in the seats so they bought a lot of tickets and are giving them out

I've found in the past that free or discounted tickets can be found for almost all games. Last season I attended all games and never actually payed for a ticket. That's why I stopped buying season tickets two years ago.

I'm not even near Weber and I still buy season tickets. However, if I was, I would be somewhat upset. What is the purpose of buying season tickets if athletics just gives away tickets to each game? Since I live out of state, I give my tickets to family members who I hope use them (they say they do), but since they are free, I'm sure my family doesn't care as much about having to use the tickets as they would if they actually had purchased the tickets. They might show up for a quarter or two, if they even show up and leave. Getting something for free makes the product less important. In fact it makes the product cheap and in a sense worth the price of admission. If admission is always free then what does that say about the product. It is nice that Coke purchased the tickets. That shows a commitment to the community by Coke. But what does that really say about Athletics commitment to their program? I'm glad that revenue is still coming in, but the whole goal is to develop and cultivate a fan base who will support Wildcat athletics after the season through donations, membership in the Wildcat Club or Grid Iron, and who will be individuals interested in "spreading the message." By giving away tickets, mind you the week of the game, you are telling the community that this product isn't really worth their time or money and in a sense saying that the department and in extension the university isn't either. Marketing and Jerry Bovee are to blame. Way to give up. Would have been nice if you had even started to try. To me, and the coaches and players, when Hill was hired, Jerry Bovee made a promise. To me he hasn't kept it and in fact hasn't even tried. Marketing is under him and if marketing fails, he fails. Nice way to follow through. This is his only way of keeping that promise. Have a business buy the tickets instead of actually marketing the program. Way to make Weber look like a cheap Whore.

You aren't crazy and like you, I'm glad to hear that Coca Cola is participating. Thankfully Weber is making some money off of this game, while also, filling the stands. :thumb:

I love the points in this post, but this quote is the highlight. Partner with business for free or discounted tickets but how could it possibly make any kind of sense to NOT market this game, or this product in general for that matter? I love FREE as much as the next entitlement case but I cannot fathom how one can try and build around a business model that does not target increasing a paying fan base.

As a paying customer, no, I'm not thrilled when others get the same product for free but I am used to it happening a time or two each season and don't mind as much if it means better attendance. I'd much rather see Coke pay whatever to subsidize full ticket prices and offer the tickets for as low as even $1. I think you get nearly as many to the game but they are a paying customer who has more vested interest in the product they've purchased. That is not enough, though, they should be marketing the hell out of this thing and as much as possible with internal resources-- students, players, coaches, etc. getting into the community. When Arslanian did this (to save the program) it was effective.

Another problem with Weber's approach to this particular game is if the FREE tix does translate into a big crowd and Weber gets thumped pretty good, how likely is it that those non-paying fans get excited about becoming a paying customer next time? I just can't wrap my head around anything to do with how they are trying run a business, let alone develop a better fan base.

Nope, not with Athletics, but I am a student that follows all of our sports teams very closely.

 All I'll add to this great thread with all valid points is THANKS to all you true-purple (not blue) faithful fans, including students, who pay for & attend Wildcat games...you are the heart & soul of Weber State athletic backing!! Pat yourselves on the back, & you have every right to comment & criticize on matters...just wish the key people in charge would notice & take some advice. And thanks to Coca Cola too.
