Red shirts

Do you see anybody being redshirted this season ?

This is a very young team and we have 4 true Freshman. I think we could red shirt two players from this freshman class.

I think a lot will depend on Joel's knee and how Senglin looks at the point.

I really don't know how it will go, it is always up to the players, the parents, and the coaches. All have to be on board for that sort of thing. A red shirt year can be very beneficial for many players and can also help the program by providing longer term stability. I think that we have had a lot of success with players who have red shirted. They come in their second year with more maturity, in better condition, and have acclimated to the school and community. Hill is a prime example of that.

My feelings are that if they are going to red shirt anyone at all, they should shoot for two players and not just one. Red shirting three players would not leave a deep enough bench. I think that the coaches will want to have at least 10 players available for all games.

The truth of the matter is that the 9th player in the rotation will get anywhere from 3 t0 15 minutes in any given game, depending on foul trouble or injuries. The 10th player will play every once in a while. The 11th, 12th and 13th player would seldom play at all, except in clean up time of a blow out.

There will be 5 guards and 4 bigs in the primary rotation. If any of these freshmen can break into that rotation, and I think they have a shot, then they would not be red shirting unless they have a strong desire to do so. All of these guys have the talent to do it. However, it takes a lot more than just talent. :twocents:

How do we red shirt a 6'10" 250lbs 3 star recruit? I don't see Braxton red shirting unless he's not what we expected! We don't have a lot of bigs and I'm hearing he showed some skills in June.

We are not looking like we are about to sign another big and James is coming off a knee injury, Ryan hasn't played in two years!

If we redshirt a big, do we have enough size to compete in the conference?

If there is redshirts it will be Richardson and Hunter no question about it. We need Braxtons big body and worse case scenario his 5 fouls. Hill and Johnson-Coston will be used a little on the wing. Not much but I do think we will go big on teams.

No way Coston or Braxton red-shirt, after what happened two seasons ago, Rahe will keep all his bigs available. More guards, more likely one of those guys red-shirt.I think everyone plays this year. Tal could be right with Richardson and Hayden, but I think the team is stronger if they play. Coston is going to be a starter. I'm calling it now. Senglin, Golden, Gittens, Coston, Bolomboy. Hill is the first off the bench.

Braxton is gonna be a stud for us. No way he sits. He will probably get anywhere from 15-20 mins a game. I'm pretty confident about all our guys. Richardson needs more lbs and muscle and a year as a red-shirt would really help. Hayden Hunter would be the third or fourth guy in line to be the PG. A year to learn and grow would also really help him.

I also agree if anyone going to redshirt it would be Richardson or Hayden or both. I saw the team workout this summer and one thing that stood out with both of them but especially Richardson was size. They could use a year on a college weight program. Braxton going to play for sure once they get him in better shape. My call on first 5 right now after watching this summer and listening to staff because according to them besides Joel's consistent improvement Senglin and Hill where eye popping each day Senglin, Golden, Gittens, Hill, and Bolomboy but a long way to go to get to that point whoever plays we are going to be really good with multiple lineups.

Olds, you make great sense and I agree with you, but a lot can change from June to October. Last June I thought Wheels was the best player on our team and that both freshmen needed a lot of work. Senglin was good but I didn't think he'd start. By November he was the starter. So, who knows what will happen. I never got to watch Coston so I don't know much about him. Also, to me Braxton looked slow and a bit out of shape. Yet, in four months that can be corrected. I'm just thrilled by our depth: it is great knowing we have guys three deep at some positions who can contribute. Most impressive freshman was Jefferson and agreed about Hill, he really looked good the day I stopped by. Hill could play the 3. His speed and shot really were improving. He needs better ball handling but it is coming.

Olds, saw him today working out at the Dee..... You're way off! The kid looks awesome! The chances of him red shirting is nil. He's going to play 20-25 minutes a game. I'm thinking he's going to have a chance to start. Remember this post as the season starts!

I see Braxton having a similar role to what Joel had as a Freshman. But Zach has a much better offensive game. I project him at about 20 per game.I can only imagine that coming in a little out of shape lit a fire under this kid. The only concern I have is that small ball is a staple in the Big Sky and we might have some speed mis matches when he is on the floor. Overall, the future is so bright with this kid.

I totally agree about Braxton's future with us. He is going to be a complete monster. However, I'm not sure that you want to waste a year of eligibility for spot play. With that said, If he can beat out Hajek or Johnson-Coston, and make the regular rotation of post players, a big IF, then play him. If that does happen, maybe you consider red shirting Johnson-Coston. However, he looked like a more skilled, more athletic version of Mook to me.

Olds, question, why would Braxton need to beat out Coston? Coston is a 3/4 type, a true tweener and Braxton is a 4/5 guy, who in all likelihood will play in the middle for the Cats. Yes, I like his potential of being a 4 who can spread the offense with his shooting prowess, but still he and Coston would have totally different roles. Braxton just needs to beat out Van Pelt and Hajek. But, in all reality, there isn't a lot of depth at the 5. The 4 and 3 yes, but not the 5. And with Hajek's history I wouldn't doubt that Rahe keeps Braxton available. Van Pelt and Braxton will end up getting the most time at the 5. Hajek will be the spot up guy. Regrettably, for him, but there is sooo much talent with our bigs right now. Van Pelt was beating him before his mission. Pelt can extend the offense and is tough. I love Hajek's leadership and toughness, but he is a huge offensive liability. He is a bruiser who can give us great mins off the bench, but Braxton will be the guy.

As for Coston RS, why would the coaches waste his talent? Coston is a JC transfer, and a JC All-American. He came here to play. He was highly recruited. He isn't going to be RS. I agree with you Olds. I don't see Coston RSing

Olds,

You might want to take a look at UNC's forum. All your guessing makes them believe they have a chance.

Randy is not in any way going to red shirt that kid! I know you love Hajek and Van Pelt but it's not even close. I'm not sure what you saw in June, but I'm hearing the opposite from the team. They think they have a player.

Olds,

I will buy you a nice steak dinner with all the trimmings if Braxton redshirts this year. He already has two of the 5 bigs beat out and I agree with others that Coston really shouldn't be considered in the same bucket as Braxton and Hajek. I think the fifth big that sees very limited time will be Van Pelt. Big Jims time will diminish as Braxton progresses this season.

Olds, remember last year, anyone who had watched would have thought, at the first of June, that Wheels was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and that Senglin and Gittens were undersized, lost, and overmatched. By the end of the month you could start seeing how good those two were going to be. By the time the season started, Wheels was gone and enrolling in a DII and Senglin was our starting PG. I still think Wheels would have played quite a bit, but he let his pride get the best of him. No matter, Senglin was our best PG by November, even if Wheels would have stuck around. I see the same thing happening with Braxton. None of our bigs can shoot, pass, and handle the ball like him, except for Coston, with regard to passing and ball handling. He can't shoot from outside, but neither could Mook. Yet, Coston is more talented than Mook. A lot is going to happen. I feel bad for Pelt and Hajek; especially Hajek, but the best players will play. Pelt will get a lot of mins going forward and will see the floor this season, but he is aware that he might need to sit more this season to get more time in the upcoming seasons.

I believe that Braxton is going to be a great player for us. He is already more offensively skilled than Hajek. In June, he just had a hard time getting up and down the floor with the rest of the guys. Maybe he can get into basketball shape before October. I'm fairly sure that other teams won't hold up play until he can get down the floor. Just maybe, his play in June has opened his eyes and he has spent the rest of the summer getting into better shape. He could really help us if he does.

Like I said before, and have been saying all along, he is going to be a complete monster for us, if and when he gets into shape. If he does it as a true freshman, then great. If he doesn't, and it takes him a year to get there, I'm OK with that as well. A red shirt year isn't a bad thing. It's great to have that option. It helps many players, both academically and athletically. I think that it is doing players a disservice to paint a red shirt year as a bad thing. :dead: :dead: :dead:

Red shirting is good for a lot of players and should be advised. I'm a huge fan of having specific players red shirt. Hill red shirting was awesome for the program and for him. Look at how much he progressed. But for other players. Not advisable, especially with a guy who came her to play right away and is a 3 star recruit. Personally, I like the red shirt option, but.
