Red shirts

Saw a scrimmage on campus Saturday. Did anyone else see this? Not everyone is back yet and it is very early still, but Braxton does not appear to have made much progress on conditioning since June. Hopefully, this improves over the next 2 months. Talked briefly with a couple players after the scrimmage and they were very impressed with the work Van Pelt has put in since June. Should be interesting to see how everything shakes out. We need to redshirt 2 players this year to stretch out the talent pool. Redshirt is a good thing, especially for players who need time to adapt to college life, improve conditioning, etc. We can always pull someone off redshirt if injuries or other circumstances dictate.

I'm confused! I heard Braxton couldn't get up and down the court! How is he the second best rebounder?
In one post you said he looked awful? What's the story on this kid? I read in another post that his offensive skills are off the charts!

I've watched Randy for many years, funny you think he's going small to match other teams versus going big to make them match him? Randy bangs it inside more than any coach I know. I don't see small ball in our future.

That's why other big sky schools are looking for bigs. To match Weber! So it doesn't make sense that he would go small to match them. :?

I heard from the coaches that Hajek has worked really hard over the summer and is in the best shape of his career. He seems to be making a strong statement for playing time. He is totally healthy and has put in a lot of work on his game. I also was told that Braxton was the second best rebounder on the team in June. The reason for moving Bolomboy to center was to match up better with the smaller teams in the BSC. Many teams in the BSC are playing with a forward and four guards. Eastern Washington is a prime example of that.

There have been no decisions on possible red shirts and will not be until November. Playing time is open to whomever can win it between now and then. They haven't ruled anyone out, except those who have already red shirted.

Olds?

Rahe is going small to match EWU??? Weber has been dominant because of our size and defense. We will continue to go beast mode because we can! Why would Coach change his winning way to match a program that doesn't win?

I see us putting a lot of height on the court and taking advantage of our strength! That's what winning programs do! Look at the touches Tres had the last 4 years and tell me that now Rahe feels a need to play small ball.

Eastern doesn't play small ball that much, they play athletic. They were as tall or taller than we were. Portland State, the cubbies and North Dakota are better examples of small ball than Eastern.

I can't remember the Cats really being affected that badly by teams with speed last year. Only game I can think of is the PSU game in Portland. PSU went small on the Cats and, for that game, it worked. That and a freaking huge jumbo tron shooting light onto the court and creating issues for the players.

Eastern has progressively gotten taller. They might have the tallest lineup in the Sky next season. NAU losing Jacobsen is really going to hurt them. Same thing with UNCO losing Barden and their big white dude, Connor...can't think of his last name. lol

Osborn wasnt it?

After all the discussion and the immediate need, I've decided that it wouldn't be so shocking to see Jeremiah Jefferson RS. He is a top recruit yes, but, due to an injury, he didn't see the floor much last year and it might not be a bad thing to give him a year to fully recover, learn the system, and to grow. He, like Richardson, needs to gain some much needed size. I could understand Hunter, but with McKay Cannon coming back next year, that would cause a log jam at the 1 and 2. Who knows though, Cannon will have a RS available when he comes back. Maybe the coaches will RS him then. That is what happened to Mahoney. I don't think the coaches RS just 1 player though. I think they will try to talk two players into RS instead of just having one guy sit. Not as demoralizing??

Lots can happen between now and the start of the season. I think there will be some red shirts, but it will not be decided until days before the season starts.

It will not be a big, because frankly we don't have an abundance of 4's and 5's. Last year our bigs were in constant foul trouble. We will need all hands on deck..... Also need to see how Joel's injury improves. We have two starters right now...... Joel and Senglin. Everyone else is a contestant for the other 3 spots and nothing has been decided.

Weber State is well positioned for the future with one senior on the roster. Red shirts might be due to injury or strength development, but I'm confident that we will put a very talented team on the court and we will be starting a freshman before the end if the season.

It's going to be about talent! This is not a lay away season!

Having just watched them play, I don't think there are any sure bets for red shirting. They have all worked hard over the summer, are in better shape, and are much more comfortable on the floor. Hajek looked better than I have ever seen him. He was almost unstoppable. Braxton is in much, much better condition, was running the floor well, and was playing with much better confidence. That was really great to see.

I can tell you this, if anyone red shirts this year it will not be because they need much work on their game. It will just be that we won't want to lose a year of eligibility on someone who will contribute greatly in the years to come. Also, injuries could play a part. :coffee:

Looking forward to the start of the season. It's going to be interesting to figure out the rotation that Rahe puts together. It's as wide open right now as it's ever been!

Have to guard against injuries, but replacing Tresnak and Berry will not be easy. They both were a major impact on our offense. I hope Weber doesn't go small, might work in the BSC, but wouldn't allow us to compete with Oklahoma and others.

I'm wondering what the team would look like with a starting 5 of Bolomboy, Hill, Senglin, Gittens and Hajek. We could bring Johnson-Coston, Golden and Braxton off the bench. I'm also thinking that if we had Hill, Bolomboy and Braxton on the floor that we would have an imposing defensive team with controlling every rebound and blocking a lot of shots!

We should win the conference, but would like to see us win a game or two in the tourney. We now are talented enough at each position to compete.

The more I think about it the more I really think that maybe Jeremiah Jefferson and Ryan Richardson both redshirt this year. They both need to put on weight and maybe, get acclimatized to the university game before playing.

I think our starting 5 will be:
Senglin
Golden
Gittens
Coston
Bolomboy

Hill, Hunter, and Braxton will be the first off the bench.

This statement is tentative to change. :kisswink:

I hate to admit it, but I looked at the numbers and Braxton is going to get redshirted. I hope it doesn't bite us later with an injury to one of our bigs, but he's the only big eligible for a red shirt season. Van Pelt can back up James and Joel this season. I think Braxton is ready to play and contribute right now. He's only going to get better, but this might be a year for him to mature and work on other parts of his game in practice. The bright side is the talent around him the next 4 years will be very strong and give Weber the chance to play well into March for many years. :?

Webergrad..... I find myself not agreeing with you more often than not, but I think the comments on this post sums up the season. Weber lost its way and tried to develop a lineup to fit a trend instead of playing to its strengths. This move cost us the season. Olds was right, Rahe had a different strategy than what he used in previous seasons and it made for a horrible year. The question is can he learned from his mistakes. We got our butts kicked in the paint in almost every single game. We changed to a smaller front court and became less than average at rebounding and points in the paint. thats a statistic that needs to change for Weber to be successful next season.

You are absolutely right. I believe that lesson has been learned. We may be on the young side again next fall, but I believe we will play bigger in the paint and more under control on the perimeter. I believe that measures are being taken to correct the problems that contributed to our poor season. I would be surprised if we are not right back on track in the fall. :coffee:
