Reducing injuries

What is the status on getting field turf for Holt? That would help with team health and would aid recruiting tremendously. Astroturf is pure suckage and every kid knows it. No one likes road rash!

On last week's (a week ago) coach's show, Jeff Tingey stated that the kind of turf NAU and UI have takes 24 hours to pull up and reinstalling it took 2-3 days. This Holt turf that we have now, is removed and replaced a lot faster.
I guess they plan on holding trade shows, rodeos, and monster trucks in the Holt between August and November in the near future.

Hahaha I guess everyone forgot that this is an IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY facility that we have granted Pocatello the use for.

Replace the turf. It sucks and it hurts players.

Yeah, I have heard that -- but the Tacoma Dome uses PureGrass, another much better Astroturf product, and that is a multiuse facility that requires fast turn-around as well, so I am a little confused by that argument.

I resisted calling in and asking what the removal and reinstall time had to do with football season at the Holt. I'm surprised no one else caught that reasoning.

Eager to hear from Frank on this. Not to badger anyone, but just to get the real scoop.

If I've got this correct...Holt Arena IS owned by the University, and is not an official "athletic department" facility. Athletics gets a high priority...but has to stand in line to use Holt just like it does for Reed Gym. The University books other events to help pay for upkeep and maintenance of Holt...and does not have the money to operate it without the money from additional events. In other words...athletics is a "tenant" of Holt...not the landlord, that's why the time it takes to take up and remove turf could be an issue. I think it's an issue that can be dealt with...but it would prohibit any other events going on inside once the turf went down...or it would take a lot of extra dollars for maintenance people to take it up and lay it down...back and forth. At least that's the way I understand the issue...

In the same program Jeff stated the current turf life is scheduled to be up in 2 years...but a new turf cost is significantly higher than was built into the replacement budget when the long-range plan was made years ago. Obviously a major donor will be needed to fund this project, too. If it matters...it sounds like things are likely going to be a go for upgrading the weight training facility and getting a new outdoor practice turf. We might hear more on that in the near future.

The Tacoma Dome got an all-new PureGrass portable football playing surface installed for $826K. Why not dedicate the monies from the next set of brutal paycheck games to this purpose and get on with it? Anybody like the idea of our kids playing on concrete with a green abrasive laid over it? Not me.

"Anybody like the idea of our kids playing on concrete with a green abrasive laid over it? Not me."

That is the exact truth, too people...not exaggerated at all! Walk down there and feel what the endzone feels like...hard as a rock! No wonder our players dont like to make it into the endzone! haha

Besides the turf, are there other areas that should be looked into in order to reduce injuries?

Perhaps: strength/conditioning programs, practice protocol

what are the practices like? Do they leave kids in a state of fatigue for games? What is being done to help the kids recover after practices/workouts?

Is there more in these areas that could be done that may be more financially viable, at this time, than replacing turf?

Getting new turf will be nice and is neccessary but doesn't look like its an option for quite awhile.
