American River College opened this season in promising fashion, going 7-0 before the bottom fell out. The team with an O-Line coached by Hornet alum Jon Osterhout saw their championship hopes dashed on 2 NOV with a one-point loss to Modesto Junior College (43-42), despite having the #1 defense in the state. The Beavers ended up losing two of the last three (counting MJC and a season-ending loss to Rocklin-Sierra, 23-13, sandwiched around a 40-21 win over College of the Sequoias).
The bad news is no shot at a state title. The good news is an invite to the Bothman Bulldog Bowl 23 NOV vs. College of San Mateo (9-1, #2 in the North Section); this is a home game for CSM. ARC goes into the game with a still-respectable 8-2 record and the #3 ranking in the North Section.
The NorCal title will be decided 30 NOV at the Gridiron Classic Bowl, Fresno City (7-3, #5 in the North Section, Valley Conference Champions) vs. Butte (10-0, #1 in the North Section, NorCal Conference Champions). Kinda odd that the #5-ranked team would get the nod, particularly when Fresno City has a loss to ARC. I would have thought they'd pair ARC with Fresno City at CSM, with CSM playing Butte for a chance to play for the state title.
Good job, Jonny O. You'll get that state title next year!
