As I would looking at all the threads, its apparent that we don't always agree on things, but two things we share is that we're passionate about Hornet football and we want it to continue to grow and establish itself [Hornets] as Big Sky Championship contenders and a GREAT football program that is attractive; but not limited to, athletes, students and fans. However, as I said in the beginning, we don't always agree on how or what needs to be done to get there. Right now, one can say the program does look promising, but one could also be justified in saying that the program is stagnant. In any case, I want to know what you guys (Hornet fans, Big Sky Fans, Whoever...) think needs to be done to, if not reach the goal of becoming a prominent or championship program, at least begin to make significant progress towards attaining it. New coaches, new players, depth chart revisions, Staff revisions, the building of the new stadium to boost morale, the fan base, the athletic director...Anything. After a few games I have come up with a couple of issues that I believe need to be addressed:
Recruiting: I believe this is one of the main reasons why the Hornets have suffered over the last few years. I don't know who makes the final decisions on who is supposed to be brought in, but I know that all coaches take part in recruiting. I'm from Los Angeles and something I always here from my natives is that the Central Valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, Clovis etc.) along with Sacramento are known for producing great football players out of High School. I also hear that there are GREAT football schools out here that produce many great talents such as Grant High, Jesuit High and Laguna Creek. My question is thus: "Why can't we get our hand in the cookie jar?" I was looking at our roster and although there are a significant amount of Sacramento natives; I think there should be more if the talent is as good as it is. Do we even spend most of our time recruiting out of Sacramento? I look at the roster and I see people from LA, San Francisco, Oakland and San Francisco. We can't expect to get any big-time prospects out of these areas. They all go to PAC-10 schools; USC, UCLA, Cal etc. I think we should take advantage of getting athletes out of Sacramento because I think we have a better chance of getting good prospects who want to go to college and play football, but want to stay close to home. I really get bothered when I hear that a player from Sacramento is playing at Berkeley or Colorado St. Although the coaches are from different areas and they try to recruit from those areas because they are familiar with it; I believe our most of our recruits should come out of this city since it is so fluid with football players.
Offensive Line: This is another glaring problem I see with the Hornets. It seems like any defense can get penetration consistently against our O-Line and I didn't understand it so it really bothered me. Then I thought back to the teams we played and looked at their offensive lines. They are huge! All of them are at least 315 lbs and 6 ft tall. No wonder we barely get penetration or pressure on QBs We only have 4 300 lb players on the roster and I'm not even sure if any of them play. In any case, the defense is already in the backfield by the time Jason finishes his drop back. I think that's why we run those "Miracle Screens" (That's what I call them and I absolutely hate them. Probably because we do it so much) so much because we can't rely on the O-LIne to hold a block. Granted we are doing well in the rushing column, but we absolutely SUCK in passing as we are tied in last place for giving up the most sacks. And like I said, this has been a problem for a while. I remember when I was at school and I would run into the football players. They would tell me that they were linemen when they were the size of a linebacker. I guess you can say that this also goes along with my "recruiting rant", but we need some size on the Offensive Line or we'll always be giving up sacks. I think the Defensive Tackles could be heavier as well so they can actually make holes for Cyrus and Mike to run through when we send pressure, but I think it's MUCH more of a problem offensively.
I apologize for the long post, but I just wanted to get it started. What do you think?
