Repainting the W / Students help Weber State kick off homecoming week

Blake Garner, a member of the Purple Pak board and Weber State's student alumni association, said the Purple Pak is planning a "Purple Out" for Saturday's homecoming football game and is trying to get everyone to wear purple to the stadium.

"You come down to get involved because Weber is a big part of the city," Garner said.

"It's why we're here, it's why we support Ogden, it's why we're involved. It's what runs this town. It's a big university; we need to make it a university. We need to compete with all the other (state) universities and get a big turnout."

Garner, a business administration major, said he'll graduate in 2012.

Here's a question about the 'W' that I have wondered for some time now: How come we don't have one painted on the mountain side where the electric one sits during homecoming week? Also, how come that W isn't lit more often, like on game nights, etc.? Doesn't the letter at the U light up a different color depending on the result of the game? That would be a cool thing to do at Weber to let the entire community know that there is a game and what the result was. The only thing I can think of is that it may be an environmental issue. But if it is, then it should be at all the other Utah schools too, don't you think?

I think it is an environmental issue, all the other schools had theirs up before it ever became an concern. I don't see it ever happening up at WSU. An alternate would be to add lights around the new skybox W that lights up with a win.

Its great to see a giant W on 25th street, the heart of Ogden, but other than that, I think the painting of that specific W was the total interaction between the community, alumni, and the school for homecoming. The game was definitely sweet, but as for the festivities... AWFUL. I was kinda ashamed to be an Alumnus of Weber. Its pathetic to see how little the administration, Alumni Relations, and the WSUSA care about tradition, homecoming, school spirit, and in general Weber State University. If the professionals at Weber don't want to do their jobs, well then, its time to get people who will.

Oh there had been a W on the mountain side before, throughout the 50s, 60s, and early 70s.. The rocks that they used to use are still up where the lighted W is. I personally think its a bit idiot that Weber doesn't put one back up there, while the U, Y, and A (granted its on the side of Old Main) all have one (I think having a lighted W on the side of the stadium would be good enough, but not the best). What would a cement or white-washed W do to the side of the mountain or how would it be detrimental to the environment? There isn't even scrub oak up there. Maybe some of you should hike to the spot and see the boards and old rocks that are scattered throughout the area. Also, Ogden has nothing to do with it, since the land is either owned by Weber or the Forest Service. Personally, I think the "conservation/environmental" excuse used by the administration is pretty damn thin. John Muir wouldn't even accept it.

Has the admin. used this excuse?

Oh great! Talhad and another one of his crusades.

I do agree with him to a point though. Homecoming was pretty dang lame. Whats the point of having homecoming, if nobody really wants to promote it? Hell, a group of monkeys could have done a better job of organizing homecoming.

Anyway, as for the W, I, for one, really like the tradition of having a lighted W on the mountain side. I heard, and this might be just a rumor, that someone in charge of homecoming wanted to get rid of that because it cost too much? Is this true? If that happens, whoever said or is advocating that to happen, should be FIRED. I heard it was 1K to light the W for one week. That is far better than some of the other things that WSUSA spends their budget on (such as 80% of their officers).

Oh well... HELL of a Game yesterday, and not a bad turn-out fan wise.

I don't see why they don't just light it up. The W is already up there and how hard is it to turn the dang thing on? That and the activities around homecoming really need to change. The last few years they have been so lame. They at least used to do some type of carnival thing and man I miss the wing off they used to do.

I agree with the Idea to light the W that is on the west side of the stadium. Great Idea, it can be seen all over the valley.

In 2009 they think its tacky n trashy to have a big letter on the mountain you can see from miles away. Not my opinion just an assumption. I dont see why it would ever happen and its discussed every yr during homecoming.
