Retired Numbers

So now that McGuffey's number has been qasi retired... they call it retired yet it still can be issued... who else will make that list?

Reed obviously
Vincent obviously

Others maybe down the road:

Adam Matthews
Tom Beck

Beyond that I don't know the players pre 1988 to have an opinion.

Also, has it been said where the number sign will be displayed in the stadium? At the PSU game they had it zip tied to the side of the student section and it was really looking bush league... I hope that was just temporary for that last game.

And although it's basketball it's ridiculous Mike Higgins' number isn't hanging in Butler, I mean come on already.

Interesting question there. I'm not sure what would qualify for retiring a number. Obviously winning the Harlon Hill award qualifies. Beyond that I'm not sure a really great player who also shines in the NFL (i.e. Vincent and Reed in your example and lump a guy like Aaron Smith in there too). Not sure where I fall on that yet.

For the deeper past, why not the numbers of individuals who have also been recognized as members of the athletic HOF?

I think with a guy like Reed what makes him more worthy than just being a great player was the fact he was an academic all american and graduated with a 4.0. So yeah, I think you have to look at the person beyond just the playing field, did they graduate, were they a good citizen, etc.

I think it should be based on how much money they donate to UNC. Just joking.

Reed, Aaron Smith, VJ and McGuffey are all deserving so we can just evaluate their qualities and work backwards from there. They all made the NFL except McGuffey and they all dominated the games they played. They all had high grades in college (actually I'm not sure about Smith). They stayed out of trouble. They were all All-Americans. I don't know what else.

If that was the case, no one would get in. Aaron Smith is the highest paid defensive lineman in Steelers history and won't give enough money for a new locker room or score board or even scholarships? Cheep dirt bag.

Vince is the same way. Reed doesn't make as much as the others but really they're pretty stingy with their money. I usually don't root for these guys when they reach the NFL just for this reason. I see David Anderson from CSU gave the Rams a bunch of money and I know he probably doesn't make all that much with the Texans.

I am really dissapointed with our NFL alumn. Don't forget about the school that gave you the opportunity to play when others wouldn't.

Reed has enough to deal with considering he is a marginal NFL player nad has a sick child.

First of all they dont give money because of how the athletic department is being run. All the coaches who helped make the players you all speak of were run out of town by this new AD.

Smith had a real problem with Fallis thats why he has washed his hands of the university. Get your facts straight before you call him cheap.

Dalton was a big reason Corte, Vince, Tom and Adam were successes. He was tossed aside like a rag doll. enough said as to why Vince wont give a dime he doesnt have any ties to the program anymore.

But I do think that all the names mentioned are worthy of having there numbers retired. A few more names that come to mind are Scott Zimmerman, Jaime Hiner, Paul Hubbard, Martin Jones (2X academic All-American) Can anybody say BILLY HOLMES!!!!!!!

I see your point. But when someone like Fallis represented a university it can sour you for a long time. Lets hope Aaron comes around one day(he does have deep pockets)

So to summarize nobody gives because nobody likes anyone that's here now or has ever been here in the past and they're pissed about anyone who was ever fired. :x

It's amazing other programs are so well supported, I'm pretty sure other schools have changed football coaches before.

I agree. If Aaron Smith doesn't give to UNC because of one person, an old AD who isn't even here anymore then I would say he's selfish. UNC is bigger then one individual. Whether it be an old coach or an old AD.

Do other teams fans like their AD's? Not too many. I visit a lot of fan websites and they're saying worse things about their AD's then we are. It's not a popular job to have. You basically have to be a hatchet man and make hard choices that may not sit well with a lot of people. We aren't the only one's folks.

A few random thoughts - that's all I ever have right

Donations - everyone has the right to donate money where they want. Personally, I would love to see some of these guys give back to UNC but I also understand if they don't want to. The current admin has basically closed their eyes to the fact that UNC was even a university prior to 3 years ago. When you ignore that and treat alums that way, they are not going to donate. Also, when you unceremoniously can coaches that had the ties to the players they are even less likely to give back. Look how pissed Joey Porter is that he gave all that money to CSU now.

Retired numbers - way, way way to many names. At the rate we are offering them up we won't have any numbers to issue. The hall of fame is for great players (which some of the guys being mentioned were, but there are a lot of names being thrown out that aren't even worthy of that). Retired numbers should be for the truly exceptional players - like a Harlon Hill winner. We can't just say any good players gets their number retired.

I agree, retiring a number should be a distinguished honor, bestowed only the best of the best of the best.

While I would love it if our NFL alums would donate, I also recognize that they are under no obligation to do so.

Remember, it's about what people do off the field also. Fum McGraw gave a lot to the Ft. Collins, and CSU communities before they retired his number. Before that, it was an african american player that died on the train on the way back from a game that had his number retired. I don't think that it's supposed to be tied to ones G.P.A., or pocketbook. I think that the choice should be based on what they did for the school when they were here, and what they've done to represent UNC in a positive light in the community. As far as their wallets, I have a couple of friends that play in the pro's and they both said the same thing, " Sure, I make a lot, but it could all end on one play where I get my neck or back broken. Or to a lesser extent, a blown knee or other career ending injury." At that point, I'm sure that a guy wants money in the bank to take care of his family before his Alma Mater.

I'm surprised that the new leading rusher isn't being mentioned on this list. Andre Wilson. Might it be because he jus graduated. I remember reading that his high numbers came throughout the transition and he didn't even play on a team that went to the playoffs (all the records include playoff numbers). Jus a quesion i'm bringing out. Also, I believe VJ's number should be retired, and I believe the reason he is not giving any money is because of the new AD and everything coming out of the Athletic Department.
