This is tragic news - I can’t imagine the grief and sadness the family must be experiencing. Our thoughts and prayers for John’s family.

this is tragic news; sounds like he was a very likeable young man and a credit to the Sac program. i hadn't heard about his injury, so this article was a complete shock.

Got this email this afternoon:
To All Hornet Supporters ~

John Bloomfield passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Mercy General Hospital. John was a man of faith who led by example. He inspired people of all walks of life, both young and old. He was a person who helped all of us see each day as a blessing. John’s leadership will be truly missed by the entire Sacramento State community.

As we move forward, I ask that your thoughts and prayers go out to the Bloomfield family. We thank you for all of your support and concern over the past four weeks. The Bloomfield family has been overwhelmed by the amount of support from parents, players, coaches and fans. We are blessed to have such a great group of people that care about our student/athletes both on and off the field.

Sincerely,
Marshall Sperbeck
Head Football CoachSacramento State

Condolences to John's family, friends and the Sac community. It's too bad we often don't find out what great people these young players are until something tragic happens. From all I'm hearing, it sounds like you've lost a great young man.

Heart breaking news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, teammates and friends. In the world of sports it's easy to forget the individuals, as we become more focused on the group. As this story has unfolded, these young men's personal dedication, risk and sense of comrodery has shown through. John's story was humbling, and he will be missed. It's been really nice seeing Hornet nation, the Sacramento region and the FCS world come together in their thoughts and prayers for this young man.

A tribute from my son on FB to his fallen friend/mentor/ and teammate....Had to share as the loss of JB has touched our family.

“John! I can't believe you were taken away from us in such a short time. It's a sad day for not only me but many who you have touched during your time here on earth. I will always cherish the time we shared and will never forget how you helped me through my struggles last year. I can still hear those words of encouragement like it was yesterday! I will always remember the time you told your story to those little kids while we did community service, it was that story which not only made me shed a tear but also helped me understand how strong of a person you were! John you were loved by so many yet respected by many more for the way you carried yourself on and off the field. I still remember the day when I complained about having to do a little extra homework after study hall and you had a 7 page paper due the next day, not once did you complain about it but simply said " ima get it done". That's the warrior that I will miss so much. You brought out the best in all of us as football players, students, everyday people, and most importantly followers of Christ! I still can't believe you're gone! Just yesterday you were telling me before my first college game "little Uso it's time for your legacy to begin" but it was your legacy which inspires me the most! I was once told that everyday God goes to his garden and chooses the most beautiful flower in his garden to serve him in heaven, and while a lot of people are hurting by your loss I know that you just happen to be that flower! JB, Big Uso, John Bloomfield, you are gone but will never be forgotten! Everything happens for a reason and it was your time to finally serve God in heaven! I pray for your family and friends as they mourn your loss.. I love you and miss you so much... Rest In Paradise!”

God Bless you John and may you keep watch over your friends and family in heavan.

Do any of you guys remember the Holy Cross flag that was displayed for years in the trophy case in the Gym Lobby?
I went by the other day and it was gone, I hope it being displayed elsewhere. The 1969 team dedicating their season to the Holy Cross team made national headlines and is a significant of Sac State history.

John must smiling tonight. He is on that pickup in heaven waving the Sac State flag cheering on another huge Hornet victory. I am never happy with losing, but if we were going to lose I am happy it was this game. I hope it brought a little bit of light to the Bloomfield family in their time of sarrow. Now go out and win the next two. I will be pulling for you. Go HORNETS!!!

Very nicely said. I'm certain John is looking down and smiling on this one. I think his teammates had a little extra spark for him.
