what a great Hornet!! Would love to know more about those early teams and see photos.

Agreed! I would love the school to create a museum where we could view pictures, celebrate past athletes and read testimonials and the history and milestones of the athletic department.

R.I.P. Lloyd. Thank you for making our program better, and helping to blaze the trail for Hornet athletics.

Dr. Snelson was one of the nicest guys I ever met. He was kind to EVERY Hornet player, including those (like me) destined to never see the field. I've never known such a loyal supporter over such a long period of time for ANY school team at ANY level.

I knew that he was on the first Hornet football team ever, but I didn't know until the school posted to FB that Dr. Snelson kicked the game-winning PAT in Sac State's first-ever win.

I attended Dr. Snelson's memorial service in the Alumni Center today. It was SO good to see the old guys. Coach Volek gave one of the keynote addresses, using Dr. Snelson's first name as an acronym for Love (for his friends and family), Loyalty (He was "Mr. Hornet"), Officer (using his Naval service as a go-around to get in leadership), Youth (he always made people feel young), and Dedicated. I had no clue that he was a beloved principal at three Sac-area high schools (including D-II power Bella Vista). The stories were hilarious.

I got to see pretty much the entire coaching staff from my era except for Angus, who couldn't get out of his duties at UCLA. I also got to see some of my old buddies like Scott Towne and Bob Ghazanfari. We may not have had all that much on-field success save for the Charles Roberts years, but these were some amazing guys nonetheless. And the reminders of how valuable Dr. Snelson was to this amazing university were incredible. To go from kicking the game-winning PAT in the first Hornet win (Game 1 of 1955) to being Mr. Hornet is incredible, indeed.
