Rival in the Big Sky

I'd like to see us develop a rivalry with Montana. They're the best in the conference and I'd love nothing more than to see us knock them off that perch. To me, it's like when Bill McCartney was coaching CU. At the beginning of the season he would circle the Nebraska game in RED. That's who they were gunning for every year. Of course Nebraska didn't consider lowly CU to be their rival, they were too far beneath them. But when CU beat their butts a few times it certainly became a rivalry and they started holding the game on the Friday after Thanksgiving in front of a national tv audience. That's the kind of rivalry I'd like to see us have against the Griz. Their fans would react the same way the Nebraska fans did; with a lot of righteous indignation. But when we beat the s_ _t out of them a few times it will become a rivalry. Downing needs to take a page out of McCartney's book. Circle the Montana game in RED at the start of the season. Since it's the last game of the season, just like CU/Nebraska, every game during the season will be building blocks leading up to that confrontation. But you have to challenge the team, keep them focused on the goal, make it a BIG DEAL! This should be something that Downing is very familiar with since he was a coach at Nebraska and he well knows the kind of rivalry CU/Nebraska has become. Get the fans involved, whip them into a frenzy. Who knows, it could happen with UNC/Montana.

I would like to see WSU and UNC become rivals, but for some strange reason, I see UNC and NAU being rivals

I thought Montana State was kind of our rival. Northern Arizona would be good, we are the 2 most southern schools in the conference.

that would be great if we could get a rivalry with montanta we have a ways to go tho it seems like. i could see montatna st becoming a rival if we can continue to upset them like we have been. I would really like to see weber st and us come into being rivals i think it would be a very good one. i could see northern arizonia as well based on the geography. my order would go.
1. Weber St
2. Montanta
3. Montana St
4. Northern Arizonia

Step one is to not be a laughing stock, step two is to earn respect, then, maybe like 10 years down the road we might hope to be a rival with someone, it aint happening anytime soon though.

NAU makes better sense. We're both smaller schools surrounded by bigger schools. Plus we're both teacher-education schools.

haha true. Hey heres an idea...................they could play for a golden piece of chalk as a rivalry trophy every year or something like that...............

Would be cool to see a rivalry with WSU since Weber is the closest school to you to road trip to.

Interestingly NAU, UNC and ISU, all 3 of em's closest school is Weber.

It kinda sucks how our conf is so spread out because going to road games in football or basketball is way fun. I've been to ISU, NAU, UM, MSU. I'm thinking about making it to UNC this year.

I'm all for finding a rival, I think we need one to start building some tradition. On the other hand Blo is right, we need to start earning our rep back, this year I think we'll see some more wins.

I love how I'm the dick and the moron yet I donate money and we win one game a year.

To be honest I think it's pathetic that UNC "fans" accept such a low standard when schools like N.D. State and S.D. State can be above average programs at this level yet we are LAUGHED at by other schools in FCS.

Have some pride and some competiveness and don't accept the excuses from the current regime and have some onions and demand something more than one win a years.

It's not preordained that we be a joke, we give out 63 scholarships a year (as far as we know from from the current administration) so why shouldn't we win at least half our games unless we just roll over and give the other yeam the win, you know like going for an obvious and telegraphed 2 point conversion attempt, giving up a 45 yard hail mary, or fumbling on the goal line, week after week.

Yeah, I'm the problem...

I agree with you 100%. Right now, talking about a rivalry is the equivalent of talking about what I'm gonna do with the money when I win the lotto. Let's see if we can win two games at least before we start discussing this.

This could relate to more than just football. Would love to see a few "all sports" rivalry develop with a couple of schools.

Personally, I think the best Big Sky rival for UNC would be Weber, because of geography, but Weber's rival will always be Idaho State, since the two schools are only two hours away from each other. However, I really wouldn't mind have another rival, and I really like UNC. I think UNC has done a far better job of being competitive than a couple of other Big Sky schools (I wont name names but I'm sure you can guess). I think Tad Boyle is an absolutely amazing coach, and I really look forward to the Weber/UNC games next year. As for football...yes, UNC had only one win last year, but they were overlooked and underrated. The UNC game in Ogden was far more competitive and exciting than the ISU game. I wouldn't be surprised to see UNC win a bunch of games this season. I do think the basketball team could be a dark horse in the Sky. Its too bad that Banks is done. If you guys had him for another season...you'd definitely be one of the top contenders for the crown. But, nonetheless, I still think the Bears will be extremely dangerous, and not only in basketball.

I would go with WSU due to geography, maybe NAU, but can you really have a rivalry with a school that has the same colors? Same problem with MSU.

Give it time, and I'm sure some rivalries will develop, we just dont have the history or the geography (ie CU vs CSU) for any serious rivalry at this time.

This is why I think a rivalry with NAU could develop. It seems like every time we play them in basketball, both men's and women's, it comes down to the last minute. Given that fact and the nature of our loss to them on the football field last fall, I think I rivalry between us and the Jacks could develop.

Also, UNC, NAU and Sac St are the only three Big Sky schools without natural regional rivals. (WSU-ISU, EWU-PSU and the Montana schools being the regional rivalries)
