Roos Field Renovation

What if having a fancy new scoreboard puts an average of 500 extra butts in seats? Although the stands are atrocious the scoreboard has a higher chance of instantly providing higher attendance. New video scoreboard plus more fans creates a snowball effect. I like Chaves quote about turning it into more of an event rather than a game. All of the gimmicks that a video scoreboard provides make the game more enjoyable for the casual fan (sadly we need them lol).

I think Chaves wants the jumb tron to sell ads, which is cool with me, EWU can use the cash.

I have to say (after attending the games in Reno and at Qwest), you forget how much having the replay adds to the game experience. We really need this capability!

I agree. It's instant advertising. I mean, can you imagine the immediate effect that it will have on even people that are just passing through town, not to mention students and the people that already live there. It's going to get the word out in a great way. I really hope we can get this done for next year. I'd be willing to donate money towards it. I think the turf has already been paid off of, so does anyone know if the capital campaign for the jumbo-tron has been has been started yet?

The video board fundraising started the same time that the red turf project began. I have heard that the fundraising is near completion but not yet. They want to raise enough for a video board in Reese Court as well. Go Eagles!!!

I heard we had nearly 7,500 in attendance. Pretty sure thats the most ever for a non Montana game even more than the playoff game against sam houston.

I thought they said 7700 but maybe I heard wrong. Still, I think you may be right - for a non-Albi home game anyway.

then hopefully comes the visitor grandstands!

Thought I'd re-post this over here for reference. :D

Venue improvements, period. People see our stadium, and those that don't know much about FCS football will automatically think of us as a small time program. If we wait around until we are filling every game to capacity to expand the stadium, it's never going to happen. Good news is I think we finally have a president and AD who "get it". Bad news is that any further expansion or rennovations will most likely have to be done with private donations vice state dollars. There's no denying that our venue hurts us in recruiting. Erect a 4k seat grand-stand on the visitors side, and we'll be stealing more recruits from Montana, not the other way around. It's all about public perception and game day experience. We already have the talent, coaching, and winning tradition. If we can get Roos field to a point where it's somewhere that recruits want to play at, and more people want to go watch a game there because it's a kick-ass game-day experience, we'll be a NC contender *every* year.

Exactly. I've heard rumors that when Husky stadium begins its renovation, we may be able to get a good price on their Huskyvision jumbotron (how awesome would that be?!) which would be a start. But, as Dopa has been preaching for years, those visitor stands gottta go! I found this website breaking down the cost structure of what goes into a new stadium build. Towards the bottom, it states the average cost per seat works out to be $200. So, 4,000 seats = $800,000. Interesting to look at, if nothing else.

People seem to forget that Montana was mired in mediocrity until the initial construction of Wa-Griz, with relatively small attendance #s (I'd dig them up now, but I'm working on my master's thesis  ). Only after they got a decent venue in place did the fans (and the donations) start coming in. Obviously we are in a different market than UM, but I totally agree about the casual fan from Spokane writing us off as less than awesome. I also agree that this MUST be a private donation endeavor. Look at it this way...if we can find 1,000 alums who are able and willing to donate $1,000 in the next year, there's $1M right there. I don't think a 1000 for 1000 campaign is that unrealistic, do you? Shoot, give everyone who donates at least $1k an engraved brick displayed somewhere on the new structure. Ok....back to the paper. Go Eags!

Same deal - I'm reposting from another thread to keep this in mind ...

If you've been keeping an eye on what's been going on over at MSU, then you may realize that they started a fundraising campaign this fall with the goal of raising 4 million dollars before the Cat/Griz game. They were successful and then some. Check out the link to their site (and I would note that their blog was very active in the process).

Interesting. I'm wondering when they will begin renovations, and assuming the university could get a good price, how soon they could get their hands on it. It'd obviously take some money to refurbish the color and lettering and whatnot.

Found the information re: Husky Stadium rennovation:

Demolish: The construction of the new stadium will begin at the end of of the 2011 football season with the demolition of the majority of the current structure. This includes:

The 2012 football season will be played at Qwest Field. The six home games will be against Portland State, Nevada, Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona State.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like they won't be done using it until the end of next season. Kind of a bummer. Assuming we could raise the funds in the next year, the soonest we'd have it would be the start of the 2012 season.

BRILLIANT IDEA FOR THE 1,000 FANS - 1,000 $. We can get that started in the next few days. Have someone with the website making abilities create the site and we can give it a jumpstart by donating the FIRST. WHY TALK ABOUT IT IF WERE NOT WILLING TO DO IT. We cant count EWU to do this, bc at the end of the day its gonna be private donations making this happen ANYWAY. I think we can nail this EASILY IN one year and have construction start immediately after the 2011 season.

Just think, at the start of the 2012 season Roos Field could have, Red Turf, New Video Board, & roughly 13k seats! ( not to mention the current east side is a MAJOR eyesore & hindrance  ) Ive seen fundraiser efforts secure a 1/4 Million bucks in 40 days. And you think we cant get this done in 12 months!?

Example East Side Expansion
Goal = 1,140,000
Seats= 5,700
Tot Cap = 13,500

Here is my 2 cents on the renovation.

I am 100% in favor of the renovation, but we need to get a lot more people involved. I am not sure as to the university's stance, but I'm sure if the $$ was there, they would have no problem with the renovation. The biggest issue is that we have a large Alumni base in the northwest, and a HUGE alumni base in Spokane, but we have little Alumni involvement for such a large Alumni base. Just look at our fans in the stands during this years season, we had a top 10 team throughout most of the year, but couldn't fill the stands. We are ranked #1 in the nation, but something like 53rd in attendance. Based on the attendance at the games, we are not going to raise money through the university, it is going to have to be through private donations.

Blackfalkin makes a great suggestion and the goals posted are actually attainable with enough participation. Look at Montana State, their goal was to raise $4 Million in private donations and it took them 5 weeks to do so. We are just looking at raising $1 million, it shouldn't be a problem. I know we compete with a lot more schools and other attractions in Spokane, than Montana or MSU do, but we should be able to raise $1 million for renovations to the field.

The teams success this year will help with motivating people to donate as well as come to the games. A playoff run will help as well. The team will also be really good next year, which will also help.

It took a group of Bobcats to get the fund raising started for MSU and then others followed, it would be the same with us. I am more than willing to assist and participate in helping to start a campaign, we just need a group of us to get things started.....

I hate to be a buzzkill, but EWU doesn't even have 1000 EAA members (at least last i had heard), let alone 1000 people willing to donate 1000 dollars. I know i would personally donate to this goal, but they will not want to cannibalize the EAA scholarship fund for donations for new hardware.

The idea of a dedicated fund is a great idea, but we would need EWU to setup that fund, people would want to use the donations to be tax deducible, and that can only happen if it's a nonprofit we give the money to directly. I'm not sure I'd be up for donating another 1000 bucks on top of what i'm already giving the university.

I'd be interested to see how this idea floats on the Eastern facebook page. Obviously the regulars on this site are going to be supportive and encouraging but it might be more informative to test the response there. BTW, I'm in ...

1. EWU would have to be OFFICIALLY running it/in charge of it.
2. EWU BOD would have to approve it.
3. EWU has their Goeags.com website, other univ sites & the alumni mag to advertise it.

Having said all that, our job would be to show EWU that its feasible, & inform them of all the ppl willing to help. We could also have someone draw up a 3d model to get an example. The example i always go with is Mackay Stadium in Reno.

IMO, this stadium is a great example of what RF could be.
~Mackay & Roos both have tracks|
~Both have endzone seating before the track
~It has what RF is missing which is the visitors side grand stand.

An FCS stadium which has made the improvent RF should make is KBS at ASU.

Maybe not a second deck, but a perm, 5,500 seat grandstand on the visitors side, plus the endzone seating, red turf & video board would REALLY change RF for the better.

If EWU could avg 13.5k they'd be 13th instead of 53rd. If u build it, they will come!

Looks awesome. Now we just need a shit load of money. :D

Kidd Brewer is very nice, those of you who went to the playoff game with me know that:) I would love to see us get rid of the track though, especially since we have room for it around the practice field. We could always start out one more phase by widening the existing main grandstand, if you look carefully, you can tell you could probably add another 20% to it without having to round the corners.
