ROOT Sports Big Sky Conference TV schedule release - 5/6/14

What I am surprised at is the Cats being aired 4 games. They lost the last 3 games, and didn't even make the playoffs last year. And they don't look much better this year. Cal Poly should be a huge viewer market compared to Bozeman.

4 home games is nice and based on the viewership, MSU and UM also deserve 4 games as they will draw better ratings.

Only problem I have is only 1 of our games is a home game, and that one is a given, UM. PSU gets 3 televised home games?!? I guess we don't have a lot of strong opponents at home this year but how does PSU get 3 televised home games and cal poly none?

Headquarter for Root sports is in Portland. Costs are much lower.

True, but a UC Davis home game is on their schedule, only because they are playing MSU...

Cal Poly is not in the footprint of ROOT Sports's television audience. For all of Cal Poly's home games, there are also bigger matchups closer to home (Seattle and the PNW) for ROOT Sports to cover.

Cal Poly Home Games:
Sept. 20
- Cal Poly vs Portland State
- ROOT Sports covering EWU @ Montana State
- Edge: EWU @ Montana State - Too big a game for ROOT not to cover.

Oct. 4
- Cal Poly vs Southern Utah
- ROOT Sports covering UC Davis @ Portland State
- Edge: UC Davis @ Portland State - Portland State is within the ROOT footprint. Cal Poly and Southern Utah are not.

Oct. 25
- Cal Poly vs Montana
- ROOT Sports covering EWU @ NAU
- Edge: EWU @ NAU - Both Montana and EWU are on the road, so this could've been a toss-up for ROOT. My hunch is that NAU is a stronger opponent for EWU than Cal Poly will be for Montana, thus providing a better game.

Nov. 1
- Cal Poly vs Montana State
- ROOT Sports is covering Sac State @ Montana
- Edge: Sac State @ Montana - larger Montana fan base playing close to home.

Nov. 15
- Cal Poly vs UC Davis
- ROOT Sports is covering Idaho State @ Montana State...
- Edge: Idaho State @ Montana State - Only because Cal Poly AND UC Davis are both outside of the ROOT footprint. I'd much rather watch the Cal Poly and UC Davis rivalry over MSU and ISU...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for UC Davis getting a home game against MSU on October 11, here are the games being played by the ROOT Sports "Big 4" - Montana, Montana State, EWU, and Portland State...

October 11:
- Montana: Bye week
- EWU @ Southern Utah
- Portland State @ North Dakota
- Montana State @ UC Davis

-Edge: Montana State @ UC Davis - I'm guessing since Montana has a bye week and the other three northwest teams are all on the road, the nod was given to Montana State just for the fact that MSU has a larger fan base than both EWU and Portland State, which will give ROOT Sports more viewers.

I totally see where you are coming from and I agree that root will favor UM, then MSU, then EWU/PSU, but I think some Big Sky teams will have some backlash over this. Essentially the Big Sky entered into a TV deal with a company that doesn't broadcast in states where 1/2 our teams play. I guess its a good thing that MSU/EWU/UM are the top teams in the big sky....

For the record, I love Root, probably because my team is one of the Big 4 that gets televised games.

The Big Sky has a TV deal with Root for the NW, but I believe they have a similar contract with other networks in different areas. NAU has games on Fox Sports Southwest, for example. The Eastern / North Dakota game aired last year on that affiliate, which is something like MidCo Sports. I get that channel on Comcast in Portland, but it doesn't come in HD. I suspect the California teams have a deal that services them in that market.

5, technically, with one on ESPN.

Eagle fans should all get together on the West Side and demand the SWX games get shown in the Seattle market. SWX has agreed to pick up all Eagle games in Cheney that aren't already being broadcast on Root.

I doubt it would happen, but a large number of people complaining to Comcast might make it look attractive. Comcast Sports has nothing in the way of live games anymore, so it might be possible for them to pick up the rights. I know Eastern had a game on Comcast Sports last year; I believe it was the Sam Houston State game. I'm not sure what contracts are in place that might allow / forbid Comcast from carrying an SWX game.

Maybe not on cable but I DVR'd and watch all the Big Sky games on Root Sports last year on Direct TV.
