Round 1: Southern Illinois @ Weber State

Looks like Weber will open as 3 point favorites. O/U is 49.

2:00 local kickoff - ESPN3

Offensively we really need avoid the silly mistakes and play a cleaner game. Too many of our drives start with a negative play or penalty and kill the drive before it starts. We’ll be able to put up points on this SIU defense, we just need to get out of our own way. Asking Barron to get us out of holes on 3rd and long isn’t going to work.

I imagine we won’t know about Josh Davis until just before kickoff Saturday?

In a recent interview, Jay Hill said that he expects several of our injured players back, Josh included. This will be a bench mark game. It should tell us a lot about the relative strengths of the two leagues. :coffee:

My prediction for the SIU game with an over/under of 49 I pick over. I think the Weber offense will put on its best showing of the year. Weber wins 31-24!!

I think all season Weber State played with pressure to win the conference and be ranked 1 or 2. I think the pressure is kind of off now.

My instincts have been off. I expected breakout games and they never happened. I think this is supposed to be a close game....so I will go against my impression and predict a 35-17 win for Weber State with the defense getting a pick six and getting some big turnovers to help fuel the offense.

Go Wildcats!

They put up over 800 yards of offense last week. Obviously Weber's D is much better than SELA's but SIU runs the ball well. Expect a lot of running from both teams.

Heard McKade Mitton might play. That would be huge as we were down to two DEs by the end of the ISU game.

I'm guessing (and hoping) the reason for all the close games this season is that the conference is really good. I think every team that played, except CP, were much improved. NAU was one play away from being co-champs and probably making the playoffs. UCD was right there to. We'll see how true this is by what Weber and EWU do this Saturday versus two MVFC teams.

For covid testing protocols SIU will travel to Utah on Thursday. Interesting that they'll practice at the U or USU on Friday.

In the 8 games SIU has played (including a game in October vs SEMO), they’ve only recorded 12 sacks and 37 TFLs.

For comparison, Weber has 12 sacks and 42 TFLs in 5 games.

I have a feeling that this game is going to be very similar to our playoff game against Western Illinois. Very low scoring, lots of defense and running offenses.

Would like to be wrong and see the offense explode but I've been hoping that since UC Davis. They do just enough to win but that might not be enough in the playoffs. Also cant let SIU pull an NAU on us and run for over 200 yards on us. Defense has been solid but that game came out od nowhere and I dont want to see a repeat of it.

A little surprised the opening line is only 3.5. I'd put my money on Weber to cover all day.

You are more confident than I am :-D

I expected the spread to be around a touchdown.
It's hard for me to have any expectations, other than good D, for this game. I have a lot of hopes, but I just want to see a win. I really don't care if it is 3-0 or 75-74. We are getting guys back into the rotation and that is a positive for us. They are coming up to play at elevation and that is a plus for us. They are required to come in a day earlier than normal for Covid Protocol and that is a plus for us. They are not used to seeing mountains, that could fall on them  , and that is a plus for us. We have a young, energetic coach and so do they, no advantage. They have a solid running attack and so do we, no advantage. They turn it over a lot and we turn other teams over a lot, advantage us. I believe that our D will give us an advantage, if we can slow their run game down. I don't know anything about their special teams play, so I don't want to compare that aspect of the game. On paper, we have more on the plus side, but games are not played on paper. :coffee:

SIU on the road:

L 21-44 @ North Dakota (UND finished 4-1)
W 30-22 @ Youngstown St (YSU finished 1-6)
L 27-30 @ Missouri St (MSU finished 5-4)

Weber has won 20 of their last 21 home games

Not a lot of D being played by either side.

They have some fast runners and they get to the edges quite well. We will need to slow them down a bit. I wasn't overly impressed with their secondary.

My feelings are that we just have to play our normal game to do well. It will be their strength against our strength and their weakness against our weakness.

It makes for an interesting game. Looks like 64 and partly cloudy for the game Saturday. Perfect weather for a spring game. :coffee:

The more I look at SIU's season the more convinced I become that we can win this game handily. I don't see their defense stopping our run and I think we will pass well against their defensive backfield because Barron will have time to throw and their DB's are not the greatest. Our interior lines, both D and O, I think will control the trenches. The only phase I see them as having an advantage on us is at QB. Their receivers and running backs are as good as ours but I think they will have problems with our defense. We just seem to have strength in so many more places than they do. If it turns out to be a very close game, then I think we could be in trouble because of our kicking game. I think I am being conservative when I call it a 31-24 win for Weber.
