Round 1: Southern Illinois @ Weber State

SIU players to watch on offense: RB Javon Williams Jr and WR Anante Cox are their playmakers, and G ZeVeyon Furcron is their stud on the line. On Defense, S Qua Brown is their leader, Anthony Knighton anchors the D Line, and they have a solid group of LBs in Bryson Strong, Bryce Notree, and Makel Calhoun.

#11 WR Avante Cox
#15 RB Javon Williams Jr
#59 OL ZeVeyon Furcron

#24 DB Qua Brown
#11 DL Anthony Knighton
#8 Makel Calhoun

Qua Brown is good. Caesar is not nearly as good in coverage. Yes, he led the nation in breakups but he had no interceptions. I watched two of their games and he didn't cover well on most plays. The rest of the DB's are nothing special either. The team had only 3 interceptions in 8 games and the defense gave up an average of 316 yards passing in their last 4 games. I stand by my statement that we can beat their defensive backs. I guess we will find out soon enough, lol.

Question for you guys- I’m a Montana fan and grad but I’m in the area this weekend and realized the game is happening and was thinking about coming to support a Big Sky school and watch some football. Obviously I don’t have any Weber gear so are people going to be cool about it if I show up with some maroon but cheer for Weber State? Good luck and rep the Big Sky well!

Sounds great to me. We only dislike UM when we are playing you guys. Even then, I'd buy you an adult beverage after the game no matter who wins. Hope to see you in the stands. Tickets are limited and selling fast. :coffee:

Agreed, I'd never say no to someone wanting to come cheer on Weber and rhe Big Sky even if they are wearing normal enemy colors. Lol.

But tickets are going fast. I bought mine on Wednesday and several sections on the east side were already sold out. I dont know if Weber is keeping to the 5000 only at the games but I'd buy tickets as quickly ad possible.

I'd also just call the ticket office. For some reason Weber changed their online system and made it annoyingly difficult.

NCAA committee controls the playoffs logistics...attendance is limited to 25% capacity (4400)...I heard. So even considering the fickle fan attendance at times for Weber St, it should be no problem to sell out the limit. :twocents:

I knew that missed field goal would come back to haunt the Wildcats. Defense wasn’t up to its standards and offense overthought some play calling. When you get the ball at 3 yard line, no need to do a trick run play and lose yards....just pound the ball.

Lots of improvements needed to be a title competitor: new kicker, better line play, better offensive system, etc. I think Barron shows potential, so I think he will get better with time.

I have to congratulate the team on a fourth title and working through this COVID-19 spring season. Eleven straight home wins was great, too.

Hopefully the team is ready to go in the Fall.

This is my first time seeing this place in person and I have to say that tv doesn’t do it justice! It’s a cool stadium!

It’s a great place to watch a football game. Hopefully the Wildcats can get to the point where they pack the stadium like the Griz, when protocols are over. Glad you got treated to a great game...wish the outcome was different. Safe travels back.

Jay Hill said that the field goal fake touchdown was illegal. Can someone explain to me how? I'm not the best with football rules.

The defense was absolutely horrible today!! Our secondary is pitiful and that has to change for the fall or it’ll be another lost year. Too many times receivers and TE’s run free. Barron was okay but his immaturity showed up today throwing two awful interceptions. Overall this spring showed we have some playmakers on the offense but showed many glaring weaknesses on the offensive and defensive lines, secondary, and kickers!! I’d grade the spring a C because of the inconsistent play.

I honestly think this team overachieved and won all their close regular season games. I think the talent has seen a drop off on DBs and line positions. Barron has some potential, but sometimes the confidence/leadership is either there or not like with Cantwell being a senior one-year starter, or kickers with field goals.

Barron has a lot of indecisiveness and should not have attempted the passes that were picked, especially when they were moving the ball downfield at the end of the first half. Hopefully, he can mature, but I wouldn’t turn away opportunities to improve the program.

I think in some regard Constantine might have done better today by not forcing the issue like Barron did and staying within himself although his arm is not near Barron’s.

I think this is one of a very few games that Coach Hill got out coached. The over pursing on the go ahead touchdown was easily read by SIU. Coach Hill didn’t seem to have an answer to stop the offense of SIU.

Just too many mistakes or missed opportunities on defense, offense, and special teams.

With Montana, Montana State, and Sac State playing in the fall, I’m not so sure Weber State is the favorite to win the title again. I definitely think they have a shot, but I think they have lost ground from the previous year in key places while making a small stride in QB play and OC.

The offense needs to find an identity or scheme. Too often it seems like random calls. I appreciate the improvements of variety and stretching the field, but am puzzled on deep shots when the ball is advancing 6 yards a clip.

I think when Coach Hill said that it wasn’t title or bust this year, I think it was a subtle way of letting fans know there may be a growing year or two, but hey...a growing year winning the title sure beats 2-10 type growing years.

Time for Cubs baseball to pin my hopes on. 😬
