Rumor Mill

My belief is that it is down to 2 prospects, Beau Baldwin (former Eastern Washington & Cal Poly head coach) and Darrin Chiaverini (current D2 coach at Northeastern Oklahoma). I think the choice could be announced as soon as early this week. Also believe that Crompton will be the one making the final choice and he is now trying to decide who he prefers.

Baller, I certainly hope you are wrong in Crompton choosing the successor. It should be the new or interim WSU president who decides Compton's successor and Crompton having absolutely NO say in who the new head coach is. He screwed us three years ago by picking Mental over the committee's top choice, Brent Meyers.

If it’s Baldwin I hope Crompton is fired IMMEDIATELY and has 💩 thrown all over him and his home!!!! Tim already is the worst AD in all of college sports and if he’s allowed to pick another crumb for the HC spot he deserves all the venom and hate coming to him!! I know Weber is FCS and the school isn’t big but for Christ’s sake are you telling me we can’t find a more competent AD and equally competent HC candidates?? I’m a normal person with ZERO AD experience but I could sell Weber St. and its programs better than Timmy!!! Beau Baldwin should NEVER be considered for this position as his Cal Poly tenure will surely explain, and honestly I agree let’s give the job to someone like Kjar who could get local talent chomping at the bit to show out!!! Screw these has been coaches and give some fresh blood a chance!!!

Hey. I’ve never left but am going to try and become more active in the program. I’m torn with Baldwin as he was pretty successful at Eastern Washington, won a FCS championship and recruited/produced a lot of NFL talent. That resume beats even Coach Mac. However, his tenure in Cal Poly leaves more to desire. However he was only there 2 years. If we get the E. Wash version then it’s a steal. But I can also see the argument for fresher and hungrier blood.
I don’t know if a high school coach is the answer. There’s a big difference in running a college program than a high school one. I think it would look a bit amateurish to allow a high school coach to make a jump to Division I football. They should get their feet wet as an assistant or head coach at JC/D2 level. Just a humble opinion. I’m often wrong. 🤣

Well, despite your reservations it is Crompton who will make the final decision. And so it should be, because one cannot give a person a job with responsibilities and not give him authority over those responsibilities. I agree regarding Baldwin. He is not the right fit, but hiring a high school coach is not the answer either. Nevertheless, those are the two finalist and I am hoping that Crompton makes the right choice, Chiaverini! I think Kjar would be great as an assistant and he could recruit Utah. Don't sell Chiaverini short as a recruiter no matter the state. He will definitely recruit California better than any coach we have had for a long time.

I give Crompton credit for getting rid of Mental. Maybe he’s getting in gear because his job is on the line. I don’t know if he was unable due to Mortenson. Seemed pretty odd that as soon as Mortenson left that Mental was fired. I do know that athletics was doing really well academically so administration may have thought that was more important than the product on the field. I think both finalists will be an upgrade from Mental. I think he’s a nice guy but even he knew he was in over his head. I bet he’s actually relieved to be done.

Baller, I heard the other DII finalist was some guy from Louisiana. Glad to know my source needs to work on his geography. Oklahoma isn't Louisiana...hahaha. This is an easy one if it is down to these two options. Chiaverini is a no brainer. I like Beau, but what has he done since 2016? His last HC role was a complete bust. I mean, he was trying to take a triple-option only program and turn it into a high flying, pass happy, offense and doing it during a world-wide pandemic. Gotta give him some space. More than three years, but college football isn't about what you've done, but what you are doing now. Chiaverini took a team that was 2-9 and went 9-3 the next year. He has coached big time FBS football and been very successful at every stop. To me, this is an easy one.

If any of you want to become believers...just check out how successful Northeastern Oklahoma has been since joining the NCAA DII ranks.
I looked him up. Not sure how accurate Wikipedia is but it has him going 10-12 there, in his two years with their program. Doesn't sound like a world beater to me, if that is right. That is a .45 winning rate.

I went to their football site and found that he went 1-10 in 23, 2-9 in 24, and 9-3 this year. He did get to 9-3 this year. It wasn't overnight. It was not clear if he was responsible for 2023. They didn't list a head coach that year.

Well I am sad to say that Crompton has pulled off one of the dumbest hires possible. He will be announcing that Kjar of Corner Canyon will be the new coach. The odds that a great high school coach can make the transition to FCS level of football are very bad. About one in ten hires can make that jump. But that is what Crompton is expecting. There was approximately 10 guys on the selection committee and all but Crompton wanted him to hire Chiaverini. He stood alone in making this decision and if it doesn't work out he should be fired. Kjar and Beau Baldwin came on Friday, the last day of interviews. Chiaverini had interviewed earlier and wowed everyone. But Crompton was super impressed with Kjar and overruled everyone to hire him. I hope he will be that one in ten that can successfully make this jump. But I am sure that I am not hoping for it more than Crompton. His job should depend on it.

Very risky choice. Looks amateurish. I hope it pays off and Coach Kjar can pull it off but as stated earlier this is usually not the case. It should result in Crompton’s firing if it doesn’t work out.

If it truly is Coach Kjar I for one will be cautiously optimistic. Coach Kjar is a far better coach than Mental ever was and fans seemed okay with Timmy giving him the job. No guarantees with any coach at this level but why not give him a chance??? No chance this job is prestigious enough for the bigger names in Utah right now, and at least Kjar is a local coach with deep ties to the state. If and that’s if he can hire good defensive minds I know his offense will be fine. Much happier with this pick if it happens than Mental or the Sears debacles!!

Well the John L Smith, Sears, and Mental hiring turned out amateurish as well so why not try this?? We have Jamie Martin on staff and his only coaching job to now has been some weird JUCO team in Ogden that sucked, yet everyone seems to love him.

That is exactly how I feel. A lot will be riding on how he selects assistants. My feelings are that he will have a good handle on who to keep and who not to keep. I think we will be seeing really good instate recruiting with Kjar, and as long as he keeps the right guys, out of state recruiting shouldn't change. I'm all for giving the young, up and comer a chance to make good. From all I have heard, players love the guy.

So you really think Baldwin or Chiaverini were clearly the best choices?? You also said last night that your belief was those were the only two options so if you’re in the know where did Kjar come from and why did you not say the three were in consideration????

Either way even if they do hire Kjar and he doesn’t do well we’re in no worse shape than we’ve been with Mental and the worst AD in all of college athletics running the show!

I really am hoping it's not Kjar. Sorry but jumping from high school to FCS is a giant jump. Not to mention, I feel like too many people are giving Kjar too much credit. Corner Canyon recruits the best athletes from across the state. They basically cheat the system and the rest of the state doesn't have a chance. He won't have the best of the best at Weber so expecting him to replicate the success is asinine.

You may be right, but recycling an old coach or bringing in someone who has no idea what they are up against in local recruiting, seems counter intuitive. Yes, it is a gamble. However, what do we have to lose at this point. We don't have to be the 'best of the best'. We just have to be really good in the BSC. If it ever comes to the point where we have to compete with the best, and we have that kind of money, then maybe we go in a different direction.

So Kjar can recruit according to you and I am sorry but if you think it is a big jump from high school to FCS which it is I think it is a big jump from Division 2 to Division 1. Look at Mental he had a great record at Division 2 how did he do at the fcs level?
I like Kjar because he can recruit local kids who want to play and he can coach them up.

Having played at both levels I don’t think a lot of people understand the enormous differences between running a high school vs college football program. To come into that blind is likely the reason you don’t hear of this happening ever. I’m not aware of a single success story of high school to division I head coach. It would really benefit Coach Kjar to be an assistant coach for a few years before becoming head coach. But if he’s the guy, I’ll support the Cats and wish him the best of luck.
