Ryan Edwards transferring to Portland State

http://www.krem.com/sports/gonzaga-bulldogs/ryan-edwards-transferring-to-portland-state/452069560

KREM sports director Darnay Tripp broke the news Sunday that former Gonzaga center Ryan Edwards is heading to the Big Sky to play for Portland State.
Originally, Edwards was just going to stop playing collegiate basketball and look for a job, but he had a year of eligibility left and decided to get back in the game.
The seven footer out of Kalispell, Montana served mostly as a reserve for Mark Few's squad, though he did average almost nine minutes per game two seasons ago.
He joins Bryan Alberts and Dustin Triano on the transfer trail after the National Championship appearance.

I believe this is very good news!

Bobcats and Grizzlies both have such a stranglehold on Montana athletes that the decent ones usually don't escape, which has me skeptical. Maybe he was looking for work in Portland and decided to use up his eligibility here. Is he a grad transfer?

I was thinking the same thing, especially since we're in a "homeless" year in this coming season with the Pavilion project. I think this kid has eyes on more than basketball, which is good.

He looks like a well-balanced and dynamic center.

Hello Viking Fans. I'm a Griz but am also a serious Zag BB fan. This year for the Zags was just amazing fun.

I wanted to let you know as an avid Zag follower and a Montana native I wanted so much for Ryan Edwards to shine for our State and make us proud. I still do and think that can absolutely happen. I watched Ryan closely and my take is that if he would have had run time he would have been amazing as he seasoned as a player. He had some bad breaks early and ended up in a difficult situation behind Karnowski, Sabonis, and others, but watching him play as little as he did, I will tell you I think you got a dandy. Others on the GU Boards don't agree with my assessment, but I believe you will be more than pleasantly surprised with Ryan. I predict with extensive minutes he will get more aggressive and confident, then look out! His footwork and instincts are solid. He will be a force to recon with in Big Sky. I might add he is a top notch person and you will be very happy to have him. GO RYAN!!!
My bet is on him

Very cool, classy post. Thanks. We are happy Ryan is here.

I know this is a bit late to the party, but in talking with some of my Montana friends, I found out a bit more on how he ended up at PSU. It seems out of high school, Edwards was contacted by both Tinkle (UM at the time) and Huse (MSU at the time) but that Gonzaga made a late push and convinced him to go there. Both Tinkle and Huse were skeptical about Edwards being able to play at Gonzaga and both said they would take him back if things did not work out for Edwards there. Fast forward to this year and both Decuire and Fish pretty much turned their backs on him (Decuire said he had no room for him and Fish offered him to walkon, but said he probably would not play much). So Edwards came to Portland to hang out with some friends (as documented in the story from goviks.com). After the chance meeting with Coburn and Skinkis, Edwards did contact Tinkle at OSU and Tinkle told him he'd probably do well at PSU (new coach, new system, etc.).

Good thing for us. I don't want to think how this year would have gone without the big presence in the middle.

I know he's not very athletic and foul prone, but Edwards had a soft touch on his shot and boy, could he take up some space down low. Vikings are going to miss Ryan big time next year!

In reading the previews for the Blazers/New Orleans matchup, I came across this tidbit that made me think. SB Nation highlights 50 players to watch in the playoffs. #29 is Blazer center Jusef Nurkic and they mention that he "can look like an All-NBA center one night, and a Big Sky Conference fifth-year senior the next."

https://www.sbnation.com/2018/4/12/17209746/nba-playoffs-2018-preview-players-lebron-james

Now, as I recall, the only solid 7-footer white guy in the Big Sky this past year who is a fifth year senior was Ryan Edwards, who happened to play in the same city as Nurkic (and who's similarities to Nurkic probably end there). But still, a veiled comparison between Nurkic and Edwards?
