“Mountain Lions”…. Not bad. The River Cats turned their mascot in to a nice logo and Dinger is cool in the community. A Mtn Lion seems like a good base from which to do the same.
Much better than some other of the other names that had been considered http://www.sacbee.com/2010/03/12/2602942/ufl-narrows-choices-for-sacramento.html. Those names included “Senators” (NHL’s Ottawa has it), “Redwoods”, “Miners” (no names that rhyme with other local teams), and “Pioneers” (great regional significance, but sounds weak as a mascot).

Sacramento's United Football League team will be known as the Mountain Lions, the league will announce today.
The name for the franchise was selected through a contest and voting on the team's Web site.
"Again we have listened to the fans of the UFL by selecting a nickname that proved most popular in an online vote to give one of our teams a strong and regional identity," UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said in a statement. "There were many suggestions and opinions for names with a local flavor and this proved to be the most popular and the most dynamic."
The team announced last month it was moving to Sacramento after an inaugural season in San Francisco, where it was known as the California Redwoods. Among the other names considered were Rush, Pioneers and Redwoods.
The league said the name "Mountain Lions" is indigenous to the state and that there are an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 of the animals in California.
The team is scheduled to play its home games at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium, and will practice at fields next to the former USAA offices in the Arden Arcade area.
Last week, Dennis Green, the team's coach and general manager, announced a number of key dates:
• An open tryout will be May 15 at Natomas High School (the team will release more information closer to the date).
• The UFL draft is scheduled for June 5.
• A minicamp at the USAA fields June 10-12 will be open to the public.
• The team breaks training camp Aug. 30 in Casa Grande, Ariz., and will move to Sacramento for the 10-game season that begins Sept. 10.
