Sac State @ ISU

Not impressed with the return of MBT. Overall team play in 2nd half was very uninspired. More motion penalties than I can remember.

Uninspired? I flat out do not agree. We were up by 42 in the 4th and the starters were pulled bc the impending Davis game. Makes sense - why leave them in the game? . By the way, 45 minus a field goal and an extra point is 41. You obviously checked the score after I did.

Congrats Hornets for playing to your ability today and beating the Bengals. Winning season in conference and overall. Bring on the ags!!!

Uninspired, overthrown balls, offsides every other play, couple fumbles, illegal shifts, illegal substitution, dropped balls, 14pts that should have been prevented. Yeah it was the 3/4th stringers, maybe that was the reason.

Overall its a win and congrats to a winning season and conference.

Great game Hornets thanks for the winning season, lets keep it rolling next week! I am watching the Poly davis game at http://channelsurfing.net/watch-cal-poly.html , davis looks terrible. The davis lines suck big time. Looks like they are small and slow, bad combination! 21-3 Poly at halftime.

should have watched the whole game....22-21 Davis, TD with 30 to go.

1st half was horrible, 2nd half not bad. Poly melted down in SO many ways. SUU was by far the best GW team.

I saw the whole game, congrats are in order for your Horseshoe win! No offense to davis because they played well and took advantage of the opportunities that Poly gave them in the second half which is what good teams do. They deserved their win. My point is that the Poly lines dominated the davis lines in the first half. In the second half it looked to me like Poly, just went flat were gassed whatever but they brought nothing. I like what Coach Sperbeck does, rotate defensive players throughout the game to keep them fresh and aggressive in the second half. This game just underlined the fact that Sac State has not been given the credit they deserve in the rankings. Poly's claim to fame this season was beating Montana early season in SLO by 3 points. Their other "big win" was over Mcneese a team which is ranked below us. We lost by 3 in Missoula and beat Weber which beat Montana. We lost to EWU by 4 and hammered NAU in Flagstaff, took the Montana State into overtime losing by 3. We are 10 points from being 9-1 overall and 8-0 in the Big Sky. I think that even before this week compared to either Poly or SUU we have a far stronger case for playoff consideration.
Even though as you said SUU may be the best team in the Great West they still lost to EWU by a larger margin than we did, lost to a NAU team that we beat and lost to a San Jose State team that you guys beat.

i agree with all your points; i wish we had more depth at the DL position -> that has hurt us for awhile (just think about about a year and remember our inability to get to the passer in the 2nd half).

it looked like the Ag D made adjustments to the run-block scheme in the 2Q and pretty much stopped the run. their QB was horrible. he had a 70-yard toss and run, but other than that, he was bad. poly's d line was physical and deep, and caused alot of problems with the run. not so much with the pass rush. all their pressure/sacks came from delayed blitzes, especially in the 1st half. the Davis pass game was off in the 1st half (people mentioned the wind being a factor), but Wright played pretty well in the 2nd. the inablity to score from within the 5 yard line was embarrassing, and almost cost them.

SUU kind of shot themselves in the foot on the red turf. fumble on the 3 yard line after an impressive drive; a blocked field goal; gave up a kickoff return for a TD. they rang up 434 yards, but, 4 TO's killed them. they are pretty good, have really improved the past 2 years. QB is back for 2 more years, and they are stockpiling the Mormon 'whiteshirts' (returning MIssionaries).

Recap

First and foremost I want to congratulate the athletes and coaches for bringing home the first winning season in a long time. I was a freshman in fall 02 and this is the first winning season in my Hornet lifetime. Well done!

Sperbeck had this Hornet team ready and they jumped all over ISU right from the start. They didn’t let the Bengals hang around and give them any chance for an upset. The Bengals are a bad team, however they have proven to put up a fight at home, fortunately the Hornets did what they had to do and steamrolled them. Fleming had another great game and it looks like he is hitting his true form. He burned the Bengals with both his arm and his legs. Aside from an embarrassing interception on a screen pass, he hit all hit receivers and made the right decisions. Fleming went 15 of 19 for 207 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. He also rushed for 56 yards. 9 different receivers caught a pass and Deadder was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 102 yards and 2 TD’s. Croxdale was the leading rusher with 69 yards on 21 carries. McCowan had 4 carries for 24 yards but left the game early with an ankle injury. He limped off but otherwise looked fine. He was probably sat just to be safe as that garbage carpet in Holt Arena would only have made it worse. I missed the second half of the game but MBT saw some action and he went 10 of 16 for 65 yards with a TD and an INT. It’s good to see him on the field and now he can reclaim his starting position. (Only kidding, but it is good to know he can be used if he needs to put together another epic Causeway Comeback. ;) )

The defense shut down the Bengals early. They didn’t allow ISU to move the ball very much and they kept pressure on the QB as well as kept Moore from making any big plays. This Bengal offense is not very good at all but the Hornet defense was ready nonetheless. ISU did get to TD’s in the 4th which was more than likely against the 2nd and 3rd string. ISU finished with 235 passing yards and 8 rushing yards.

The Hornets played smart on special teams and kept the ball away from Moore in the first half. The short kicks gave ISU excellent field position but the Hornet D kept them in check and made stops. Diniz remained awesome with his 39 yard FG and was perfect on his PAT attempts.

It was a complete game for the Hornets and they dominated ISU on the road. Sperbeck and the coaches had this team ready to play and they took care of business. There is one game left and it is the most important game of the season. The job is not complete yet but a win next week will definitely indicate if this program is for real.

GO HORNETS!!!!
