Sac State vs Cal Poly in 2008?????

I've always enjoyed the rivalry and very good attendance. We need to get some W's and get on a roll.

Actually, we ought to form a trifecta California Cup, given to the winner of the Sac State, Poly and Davis games. I'd much rather play a non-conference game as the last game of the season, make it purely rivalry based.

I'd really like to see an all sports league of Sac State, Cal Poly and davis some day.

Like I said, too many athletes. Cal Poly players looks like children compared to the Hornets. But yeah, the Stangs and Hornets need to get one going pretty soon. Who needs Humboldt on the schedule?
The most probable reason that Sac State does not play Cal Poly anymore is recruiting. When they do not play they can say they are better than Cal Poly because they play in a better conference (the Big Sky). It is hard to sell that you are better than Cal Poly when they have beat you the last four or five years. I think that once Sperbeck get's Sac State to the top half of the Big Sky I think they will resume playing Cal Poly. The good thing is I think that will happen very quickly under Sperbeck. The guy is a winner.

SloStang, I believe you hit the nail on the head with the sentence that I underlined in your quote. Sperbeck actually wants to play Cal Poly again, but not until he gets this team turned around.

SlickPulla, that is why we are opening with Humboldt State. We don't really need them in the future, but we do need wins now. Does that make sense?

Our second game is against Colorado State. Our third date is open, but I've heard its likely to be a Division II school. Its important for this team to go into conference play with some wins under their belt, versus an 0-3 record. His approach is very smart. So hang tight guys, I think it could happen as early as next season. We definitely should play Cal Poly. After all how many D1AA teams are left in California.

I agree about getting some wins early. I mean, since 2005, we have started 0-3 each year. That's a tough job to rebound from. And all of that was scheduling. During that stretch, we had exactly one home game in the first three games of each season (a 17-10 loss to Poly in 2006). We played ONE home game and had 8 roadies. That was all on Wanless.

At this point, yeah I don't like playing schools that are not D-I, but, we need to get the confidence early. If we get this D-2 school as HHD mentioned, we have the potential to open up 4-1 (I think we can get PSU at home) before the meat of the schedule which includes at NAU, at Montana and then home versus MSU.

From what I can tell Sac State and Cal Poly still have an openning on October 11th. Sac can still schedule a DII or an easy FCS game for their third OOC game on Sept. 13th and Cal Poly on October 11th. Let's hope it happens.

I don't think we would schedule two DII teams. We are playing Humboldt to open.

My guess is another FCS team, even though it would be fitting for a Sac/Poly game. Who would be home probably is the sticking point.

Sounds good to me, lets hope it can happen! No word yet as to the official schedule only confirmation that I have seen is the Big Sky dates, Humbolt week one and Colorado State week two.

Cal Poly already has 6 home games under contract for next season so I bet they would be willing to travel to Sac in 2008.

If it were a simple matter of money Cal Poly would be on the schedule. Poly games are right behind Davis in terms of local interest and attendance at Hornet Stadium. As I said I don't think it is a question Sac State ducking Poly I think its a question of open dates since Northern Colorado was added to the Big Sky. I really enjoyed the Poly series and hope that it will be resumed, I was at a lot of good Poly-Sac games both here and in SLO. Some of my most enjoyable experiences at Sac State games was when we were playing Poly, St. Mary's and Santa Clara, they seemed to mean the most (especially to my friends and I who went to those schools!) but they were always good natured civil rivalries. Whoever won had bragging rights for a while and then we looked forward to the next season. The series with Davis is different and can be nasty, especially in Davis, were I have seen some pretty rude and childish behavior not only from the students but also from some of the older "adult" fans. Good luck to Cal Poly this season I will be pulling for you to beat those Badgers and of course those Aggies!
It is a matter of of Sac State ducking Cal Poly. I have talked to various people in the athletic dept. and they have tried every thing they could to get this game to happen. Right now both teams have Oct. 11th open and even though it is Sac State's turn to travel, Cal Poly is willing to come to Sac next year and they still wont take the game. What would you call that? It is a shame. If you want to see this game happen, send e-mail to your AD letting him know how much you want to see this game happen.

Stang, I think all of us here agree with you. I have sent an email, but to no avail. Which is sad. Its falling on deaf ears and until some big money donors put the pressure on Wanless to see it happen, it ain't happening.

Wow, I thought that if there was any hesitation at all it was because it would have been our turn to travel. Now hearing that CP would be willing to come to us first, this is even more confusing. Why would Wanless (or Sperbeck) nix this game? We always average 10K+ for the Cal Poly games, so that's good financially and provides local interest in the game.

I know that Wanless checks this board, believe it or not, so hopefully he'll consider the game.

I have a feeling though that this game will take place during the open date. Wanless would be foolish to let this series end. He may just be bitter about the scheduling not working out last year and he's trying to make a point or something.

I wonder if it is that Sac does not have an openning in the 2009 schedule for a return game on a home and home contract and that is what is making Sac State resistant to playing in 2008. If so, they should schedule the return game for the next year the NCAA allows a 12 game season. I think that it will allow it again in 2011 or 2012. If that will not work, I think that Cal Poly would even travel to Sac next year for a very small guarantee.

Cal Poly has two FBS games and non counter game in the University of South Dakota so they really need to get a 9th FCS game on the schedule. I think that Sac State is in a great position to negotiate a great deal for Sac State. I hope that they see that and take advantage of it. I really would like to see Sac State on the schedule in 2008. It use to be a game I always looked for when the schedule was released so I could make sure I had that weekend open.

2008 SCHEDULE

I've got the schedule for those who want it.

8/30 HUMBODT STATE

9/6 @ COLORADO ST

9/13 SOUTHERN OREGON

9/20 WEBER ST

9/27 PORTLAND ST

10/4 @ NORTHERN ARIZONA

10/18 @ MONTANA

10/25 MONTANA STATE

11/1 @ EASTERN WASHINGTON

11/8 @ UC DAVIS (CAUSEWAY CLASSIC)

11/15 NORTHERN COLORADO

11/22 @ IDAHO STATE

PREDICTED FINISH 8-4

NAIA Southern Oregon over Cal Poly????? Better win the Big Sky if you want to go to the playoffs. One FBS (Colorado State), two non counters (DII Humbolt State and NAIA Southern Oregon) and one FCS team (UC Davis) for the OOC part of the schedule.

Good luck. I think that your new coach is going to do well at Sac State. I hope to see Sac and Cal Poly play again soon.

The thing is Stang, the program needs wins right now. That's where this year the focus is. We have to play the money game, obviously. At this point, the way you look at the schedule, there is a realistic chance for us to be 4-1 and 2-0 before the meat of our schedule. I want the rivalry to continue, but we made a decision to protect football in a conference years ago and Poly and Davis didn't. Im sorry but that's the hard reality.

And in trying to build the program back up, we need any and all kind of confidence boosters we can get. Besides, for a FCS upset over an FBS, I like our chances against CSU because they were flat out bad and have a bigger rebuilding project this year.

I agree we need to build a culture of winning. I think we will win 8 games with this schedule.
I see wins over Humbodt St, Southern Oregon,Weber St, Portland St, Montana St, UC Davis, N Colorado and Idaho St. I project 5-3 conference record 2-4 on the road and 6-0 at home.

This is all contingent on getting good QB play and staying relatively healthy. Because I felt we would have won at least 6 games last year if not for bad QB play.

With this schedule, anything below 6-6 would be a disappointment.

That schedule is not official yet. However, I have heard rumors to this effect. I have held off on posting this out of respect for the program. The negotiations for the last game are still going on.

BTW, I'm of the impression that Southern Oregon is actually NCAA D-II. However, that doesn't signify since most NAIAs are about equivalent to D-II anyway.

This schedule is offical. The only thing unofficial is the start times for the away games those are tba.
All home games are at 2pm and the causeway classic is a 1 pm

I would agree that long term this is not the schedule you would want but this is a program that needs to establish itself. Starting every season 0-3 or 0-4 is not the way to build momentum. I think Marshall is doing a very good job at changing the culture of losing that has surrounded this program for too long.
