Sac State vs. Montana State

Follow Hornet Faithful,

We have not beaten Montana St. since '04, so we are due. This is a very winnable game, and we have the team to do. The Hornets are better, faster, and stronger, so we will win this game.

What are your thoughts?

Go Hornets!

Well, since I predicted a 4-4 conference mark prior to the season, I think I'll stick with it. I believe we could beat them, but I'm worried about the weather as much as their team. It's supposed to be 35 degrees with a 40% chance of snow. Warm weather teams just don't play very well in cold wet weather. Plus, the Bobcats just played in a cold downpour in Portland (and won), so they have some experience with playing in bad weather that we don't have.

Hey everybody, first post over here. I was doing a little reading on your guys boards trying to get a feel for your team and some ideas on what to expect this weekend. First off, congrats on your win over NAU, we couldn't do that. After a big win in Ogden our guys looked a little tired and spent (still not an excuse though, the big sky is showing this year that you must come to win every week). Our other loss was to Eastern in Cheney, I don't know how much you guys know about that game but we were down 11 starters I think for the game with injuries and H1N1. We didn't even have a kicker make the trip. 5 trips into the redzone for the Cats with no points. Still put up 592 yards of offense though. Had a late reception in the endzone ruled out of bounds that took all 6 officials 5 minutes (no kidding!) to rule on. Taiwan Jones tore us up with yards after the catch. But thats the way it goes. Since then we've rolled ISU and had a dominating first half where we put up 240 yards and 28 points in horrible conditions in Portland. Then held on to win 28-10. We are banged up just like everybody else, secondary lost 2 starters for the season early in the year, lost a d-end after 1 half against Michigan state. Both lines have guys banged up. On offense we usually don't know until Sat. morning who the QB will be, basically 2 starters who each play a little differently, ones more of a pocket passer, the other will make plays in and out of the pocket and has pretty good feet. We like to pound the football with 2 running backs. Palmer is a 240 pound sophomore who could run over or around a defender. Mason is strong and quick and will get 10-20 yards through the smallest of holes. Our passing game is improving every day. receivers are running good routes and qb's are starting to go down the field more. And now; our D. No smack intended here, but you WILL NOT run the ball on us, especially in the red zone. Our d plays relentless pursuit of the ball and qb. Your o-line has to be ready to go, or they are in trouble. We however, are prone to give up fairly good size chunks of turf over the middle. Especially on 3rd down and long. My guess as a result of the pressure we try to put on the qb. With that being said, our d is ranked right at the top in the conference in just about every stat and they will come to play, they know any chance at a playoff game goes through them. Our return game is , well, horrible. Can't put it any other way. We have a really good placekicker, a definate threat at 50plus. And our punter is an assasin, he'll pin you inside the 5 at least twice in the game. Our crowds have been good, sellout, or close to it (14,00 plus) Although I think alot of people were hunting during the ISU game (it is Montana you know). Weather isn't supposed to be great; mid 30's and a good chance of snow showers, but not that bad for the middle of November in Bozeman. The Cats are known to struggle at times at home, but I don't think that will be the case on Sat. they appear to be hitting their stride and know that CSUS will be tough. I'm hoping for a great game, good luck and hopefully a bunch of you folks can make the trip out here.

It was great reading your post. Thank you for coming to our board and giving us your candid comments. It should be a good game this Saturday. Looks like we'll have a great battle between your D line and our O line. May be my bias but I think our O line will dominate as they have been strong and solid all year. Sounds both secondaries have the same issues but our special teams have been looking good the past couple games. Watching the team progress during the year, I think we have a very good chance coming away with a W and ending the losing streak. Good luck and thanks again for your post.

greetings hornet fans. interesting battle in bozeman this saturday with the resurgant hornets visiting a defensive-minded bobcat team. this is a huge game for "bobcatnation". the cats have to win out to secure any chance of a playoff berth. should be decent weather(35-40) and a big crowd(14-15,000).

what to expect: don't expect to something similar to the last three defenses you've faced, especially montana and UNC. this cat defense gets after the QB and stops the run VERY well. they do give up yardage through the air, but it's mostly due to teams' inabilty to get a consistent ground game established. don't expect to score 30+ this saturday.

offensively, the cats are nearly one dimensional; they prefer to run, and run they do. our offence relies heavily upon our defense to win the field position battle. our offense will probably not overwhelm your defense, but they usually make the most of a short field. we have three very capable runningbacks.

we have great kickers when they're healthy and our kick coverage teams are very good. our weakness is definately our return game, both kick-off and punt return. you won't be challenged there, whatsoever.

should be a good game, as the cats tend to play better on the road, however, i don't see the cat defense letting up and we run the ball well enough to beat anyone. my "home-cooking" prediction: cats 31, hornets 17

hope to see some of you at the game!! be sure to take advantage of the free beer and food at almost all tailgate parties. be careful of the thin galletin valley air, though. 2 beers equals 5!!!

Good to see the MSU fans drop by and fill us in on how they play. I’ve been paying a little attention to them and they have a stout defense, the best in the Big Sky IMO. The MSU offense seemed to get off to a slow start this year but thing have been coming together for them over the past few games. I think it will be interesting to see how the Sac O-line responds to the challenge that lies ahead. It will also be interesting to see how the defense responds to a heavy run offense. Sac State hasn’t played a heavy run offense since week 2 when they traveled to cal poly. I think this game will be a hard fought battle and it should be a good game.

The factors that concern me are the hostile environment awaiting the Hornets in Bozeman as well as the weather variable. Also this MSU team will be fighting for a possible playoff bid which makes them even more dangerous. This should be a good game and unfortunately I’m going to miss all the action so I hope someone can post a good game thread so I catch up on the game later. (I think I hear cheering from HHD and a few others. ) I’ll be making the drive up to Eugene, Oregon to catch the NCAA Cross Country West Regional.

Here’s to hoping the Hornets can spoil another team’s chance at the playoffs.
GO HORNETS!

We're very thin at RB and who the hell knows what's going on at QB (does anyone know)1?

This worries me. One week we show the killer instinct (NAU) and the next we got nothin' (UNC)...

I really want to pick us to win this game, but I can't. We don't typically play well in Missoula or Bozeman.

WEEK 12 PICK!!!

SAC 34

5-6 with FIVE DI wins with all losses to either FBS or ranked FCS teams... I'll take it!!!

That's progress and an IMPROVEMENT over last year's 4 DI wins and a loss to a terrible ISU team.

Greetings Hornet fans from yet another Bobcat fan! I am not gonna rehash everything the previous two Cat fans said; they were both spot on with the analysis. I will give you some names and numbers instead to look for during Saturday's game.

On offense, we have a 2 QB rotation scheme. Look for for #16 Mark Iddins to start and #12 Cody Kempt to come in sometime during the second quarter. Both guys have been capable and shown that they can move the ball. Iddins is a ball-control dink & dunker; Kempt is the gunslinger. Aaron Mason, #3, will carry the rock for the most part, but look for #33 Blayde Becksted & possibly #20 CJ Palmer (I say possibly, because CJ went out of last week's game with a shoulder injury). Mason is the slasher/cutter; Blayde & CJ are the pounders. Catching the ball, watch for #2 Elvis Akpla, and #14 Everette Gilbert. Gilbert is a freshman who can flat out fly - watch for him on end-arounds as well.

Defensively, it all starts with our Buck Buchannan Award candidate #47 Dane Fletcher. Dane was back in the lineup against PSU after missing a couple weeks with mono. Led the conference in tackles for loss before the illness. Up front, #90 Dan Ogden will be a handful. Our linebacker corp has been decimated with injury, but backing up Fletcher will be #41 Brad Daly, #42 Clay Bignell, and #23 Jody Owens. Jody is very quick; sometimes plays the strong safety position as well. Two of our biggest contributors in the LB corps have missed significant time - #34 Jeff Price and #31 Chase Gazzerro. If these two guys can get back in the lineup, forget about moving the ball.

Kicking FGs and XPs will be #15 Jason "Sunshine" Cunnigham. A true sophomore, he is one of the better kickers MSU has had in many years. Our punter, #39 Eric Fisher, is currently ranked as the fourth best punter in the nation in FCS. We have had trouble fielding kicks/punts, so look for #11 Mark Desin back there again this weekend. As a junior, Desin has seen playing time as QB/WR/CB/RB and now returner. MSU's version of Jim Thorpe!

This game has me worried. Your boys are playing very good football right now, and we have not played our best football at home this season (go figure). The one thing we have going for us is that we have to treat every game like it's our last in order to have any shot at a playoff berth. We have won two in a row, and it always seems like MSU can't ever stand prosperity; we always seem to find unique ways of shooting ourselves in the foot. Weather Channel right now has a forecast of 32 degrees with 30% chance of snow; I can only hope that intimidates your team, although we had single digit wind chills in Bozeman when NAU (dome team) rolled in and they took it to us. Here's to a good game; if any of you are traveling to the Big Sky State this weekend please be safe and look us up at the tailgates - you'll be treated very well!

Your too negative you curmudgeon.

Welcome Bobcat fans,
Wow, I must say y'all are the most candid dudes I've read here. Thanks for your honest thoughts and the great insight into your team and players. Very cool :D

Sounds like we've got many similar concerns and hopes. The Cats seem talented and capable. We also have lots of great kids who play hard and know how to get the job done, but we are young and inconsistant. The truth is we have a split personality; one dominant and the other shy. The final score will depend on which Sac team shows up. If our shy teams comes to Bozeman, you'll be going to the playoffs, with our best wishes. If the dominant Hornets are there Saturday, you'll be feeling the sting for a long while after.

Your defense sounds awesome but we are swarming right now, so my prediction:
Hornets 17
Cats 16

Good luck and thank you for the generous invite to your tailgate party. ;)

Howdy Hornets Fans. Just another Cat fan dropping by to get your thoughts on Saturdays game. I won't repeat what others have said, but hope to see a good game this weekend. The Cats have been fighting the "swine flu" bug since the second game of the season and we've had players out sick every game, but (knock on wood) so far this week we look pretty healthy as far as illness. Like all teams at this stage of the season we have some key players out with injuries but it looks like we're even getting a few of them healed up for the two final regular season home games. From what I've seen this year the Hornets are much improved which is great for your school and the conference- wish you the best but I expect to see a Bobcat victory. As has been said, if any of you make the trip be sure and swing by the tailgate areas, you'll be well treated. Go Cats!!!

I just want to say thanks to all Bobcat fans stopping by the board this week. I expect a hard fought contest on both sides as has been the case for several years in this series...

You Cat fans have class, unlike other team's fans at times.

Should be a good game, your defense is to be applauded.

Probably a little premature GCM…

So superhornet can call us kitties but if gokats calls you suck st thats classless?

pretty touchy IMO.

My term for MSU is clearly "borrowed" from the Griz. This "Suc[k] State" stuff (the spelling depends on who is dissing us) is likely "borrowed" from the Manure Pile.

I used to get riled up by that. But I've come to the conclusion that these are fairly innocuous. There are much worse things out there. While I'm not a fan of that many MSU fans (BAC is one that comes to mind as pretty good), I haven't seen many that have clearly stepped over the line. That's usually a Davis thing. LOL.

That little jab was strictly because of super hornet, she's been pulling that piddly ass crap for years now.
