SAC @ Weber, Saturday 10/11 @ 5PM, ESPN+

55-27 Hornet win. Good response by this team coming off the bye to show up and show out on the road in inclement weather. A strong performance all around for most of the game, things got a little sloppy on defense late but the Hornet prevailed to earn a much needed win. The Hornets didn't turn the ball over and played to their strengths in this one as they racked up the most points in a road BSC game in program history.

Offense got off to a slow start but the coaches made adjustments, started attacking the edge with Cardell Williams (5/9, 53 yds, 12 car, 139 yds, 3 TD) on the RPO and the Hornet running game became unstoppable. The Hornet offense racked up 397 rushing yards on the night with JaQuail Smith (17 car, 135 yds, 2 TD) and Rodney Hammon Jr (15 car, 106 yds, 2 TD) making it a trio of Hornets that rushed for the century mark and setting a school record. The offensive line up front took care of business and the use of fullback Sammy Norris really opened things up for the running game.

Defensively the Hornets kept WSU in check for most of the game. Things got a little loose late in the game as the Wildcats were able to get within 2 possessions, but the defense got some late stops to secure the win. Alex Rocha (12 tak, 3 TFLs) led the Hornets in tackling and Fata Puloka (9 tak) had a stellar game as well. If not for some fortuitous penalties that kept some WSU scoring drives alive, this game probably doesn't tighten up down the stretch.

Special teams had a notable game. Hammond returned a kick-off 99 yards for a TD to squash WSU's hopes of a rally and there were some solid tackles on kick coverage to pin WSU deep in their own end of the field. There were some lapses as well as kicker Grant Meadors (7/8 PAT) missed a freebie and Jaxon Fresques fair caught a punt inside the 10 and muffed a punt. Fortunately none of those mis-queues played a factor in the game.

One glaring negative are the penalties that the Hornets rack up. 11 penalties for 94 yards is pretty glaring. Granted, there were some bad calls in this game (how did the refs miss the WSU player wailing away on a Hornet after the whistle?) but this team is going to have to overcome this if they want to make a run at post season play. Another touchdown was called back due to penalty and the egregious calls are probably not going away.

Stingers Up!

Conventional logic would say that stormy weather would slow things down and favor a power run team. However, I have seen the exact opposite on many occasions. If you think about the individual matchups between recievers and DBs, The WRs are acting and the DBs are reacting. DBs have to react quickly and often slip in stormy weather. Unless it is driving rain, it may not have that much impact on the flight of the ball or the QB's ability to throw it. I would say that the weather is a net 0 in the outcome of the game. The altitude change may have a minimal impact on things, but the biggest impact is the travel and thus the home field advantage. I have no idea who has the better team, but I suspect that the better team will win this game.
Totally. Speaking of power run game - anyone see what happened to Damian Henderson after Q1? Obviously the depth helped us save the day, but the fact that he didn’t play was concerning. He did take a couple sloppy hits on the rain that I know didn’t feel good.

Another note - another game goes by supporting my theory that we are saving Jamar Curtis to allow him to RS and come back stronger at the end of the season/playoffs.

Some of the penalty calls were just incredibly bad. Combine that with SOME undisciplined play, that’s going to bite us all season long, I believe. It’s undeniable there’s an anti-sac state bias from the BSC Conference down to the piddliest Twitter poster. Why wouldn’t that include refs? I’m not blame the refs guy, but it’s really bad. The no penalty on the Weber punches, the TD call backs, the hold on a pure pancake block. Just gotta be THAT much better.

Great effort!
Shocked with the conditions there were no fumbles. That in itself it admirable.

Not sold on defense, and undisciplined play. #90 should be made to run bleachers. Roughing the QB, twice, was questionable. Let them play football.

Too many penalties, 94yds worth and losing defensive focus once there was a lead. Need to play 110% on defense for 60 minutes.

UNC is much improved, took down Idawho in Moscow, their QB had a 300+ yd day.

Jaquail Smith was a shocking surprise. Freshman who has a lot of upside.
Never really seen JC play, so dont know if he is as good as advertised, but it would be hard to believe he is better than JS.

Hammond was in beast mode, sweet return and keeps his legs churning, havent had that since Skat.

JS had vision, patience, speed and power. He was impressive.
