Sacramento State at PSU

If Carney can nail a field goal and our offense shows up, I may be walking out of the stadium with a free steak sandwich and 30% off Columbia Sportswear. Not bad for sitting on my rear watching some football!

*****************
• KGWs Drew Carney will attempt to kick a field goal. If he can do so, every fan in attendance will receive a coupon for a free steak sandwich at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.
• Columbia Sportswear will offer a discount coupon based on the number of points scored by the Portland State Vikings. There will be a percentage off up to 30% (30 points or more) based on the total number of points scored by PSU.

Promos are fine, but winning helps too. I figure we have a reasonable chance of winning this game. We're the spittin' image of Cal Poly and its rushing game. Question is, Can Sac State learn enough from that game to slow us down? Cal Poly was all rushing - except for 66 yards passing, used almost exclusively in the Red Zone. Can we do that? Sac will certainly expect us to rush - how good is their pass defense? When it comes down to it, however, I expect we'll run for about 400 yards and pass for around 120. Kinsella will kick two field goals this time. And Plinke - will he pass this time?

If we can grind out a win on the ground on Saturday, I'd like to see any Plinke passing plays stay tucked away in the play book until the EWU game.

I would like for our passing game to kick in, we are becoming one dimensional. We have 2 receivers over 6"3' and haven't been able to get the ball consistently to them, against EWU we are going to need to have full use of all of our arsenal. Dean had 5 TDs and 202 yards in 2 games and has not had anything catchable thrown to him since. It's fine to have a running game but we risk it being shut down when we don't have a balanced offense....What is going on with Kiernan, was he sat down due to interceptions?

Viks charge into home finale with reignited running game

What a kick in the gut.

- Plinke can pass! I love it, he stiff arm'd a defender to make his first pass attempt. That drive with him running every play was great. Right up until he was blasted in the head on the sideline. I was surprised to see him back in the game.

- DJ Adams. Great performance.

- So what was more pathetic? Our field goal kicking or the field goal contest at halftime? Make one of two of the missed field goals tonight and we win. This doesn't include where we just go for it on 4th down since we can't make a field goal.

- Rush defense gets an A+

- Pass defense get a F-

- 713 total yards and a loss. Not sure what to say.

- Coaching is suspect.

What difference does it make if we roll up 700+ yds between the 20s? Does anyone wonder why only 4500 go to PSU games now? Total coaching incompetence. 4th straight year that we've lost senior day. Worst red zone conversion in the conference. Burton's idea of coaching is to put "Finish" on the helmets like that is going to do anything. Does anyone think next year will be any different? Burton must go.

Over 700 yards of total offense and they cannot get the win at home, pathetic. That is the worst secondary, ever. Sac State drives the distance in less than a minuta and half. Sac State scored over and over and everyone except the PSU DC knew they were passing on almost every down. Horrible.

It should have never come down to a passing contest. PSU should have loaded the line, had Lilly and Plinke alone in the backfield not even had a QB on the field and told them to get us a foot. Lilly in front of Plinke to block and let Plinke will his way for a foot. Game over.

Wow what's with all the negative comments. I haven't checked in a while but am shocked to see it. You mean we didn't kick a field goal from the 15 yard line to seal the win or we didn't let Plinke , Lilly and our 240LB QB get us the inch to seal the win?

We didn't put in the Nickel or Dime defense to protect against the pass but we kept the basic run stop defense in the game?

Wow this is all unimaginable but everything I predicted 5 games ago when I was chastised for saying anything at all. My Saturdays have been spent at Corvallis and Eugene along with one on the couch watching root sports.

After 7 years going to PSU games I hung up my horns based upon the fact that winning is secondary to doing the right thing and putting this team in position to win games and then hearing fans blast the players for it. When you have a run defense in judge them on how many yards rushing the other team gets and if this week at EWU they put in the defense to guard against 473 second half pass yards then judge them.

No pass rush, no sacks, no blitzes equal passes completed. this is as simple as it gets in football.

The defense did what is was built to do and they stopped the running game. The pass defense sat on the sideline the whole second half and that is why Daniel Halverson is at SMU and Zach Whalen will be playing at SDU next year....enough was enough for them.....who is next Plinke, new recruits we don't get and what current players? Stayed tuned and continue to watch the dream fall apart because these coaches put personality before players skills.

Take care and I'll check back next year to see the "maybe next year" fan base and their line of thinking.

I agree; no pass defense cost us the game. I couldn't believe the three man line in the last couple of series. We may do a little better against Eastern Washington, but not much. Something like this will take a major revision. Still, it was a better season than last year. I expect even better next year.

Good luck in San Diego!!!

USD Football withdraws from potential Pioneer Football League championship and Football Championship Subdivision automatic qualifier amidst concerns over potential violations

SAN DIEGO - University of San Diego President Mary E. Lyons, PhD, released the following announcement today to all members of the USD community:

"Dear Torero Family and Friends:

Recently, Torero Athletics identified an issue arising out of the award of need-based financial aid to football players that is incompatible with the Pioneer Football League's (PFL) rules, but is within the financial aid need-based cap applied to the University's general student body.

Our initial findings have prompted us to report the matter to the PFL and to assure them of our full cooperation in any additional review. Furthermore and with the endorsement of a special committee of trustees appointed by our Board, and after careful consideration of appropriate immediate sanctions in circumstances such as these, we have voluntarily elected to remove USD from consideration for this year's conference championship and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) automatic qualifier. This issue is specific to football and does not nor will it affect our other sports.

I recognize the impact that this situation has on our student athletes, Torero Athletics and our entire university community. Our response now and going forward reflects a commitment to our students and to the highest standards of integrity. To that end, complying with applicable rules and regulations in the administration of our intercollegiate athletic programs continues to be our unwavering commitment.

I understand that many of you may have questions and concerns, but at this time we will defer further comment until the conclusion of a review by the PFL and/or the NCAA. Let me assure you, however, that additional information will be shared when any reviews are completed. In the meantime, I ask for your patience, understanding and, above all, your support for our student athletes."
