Here's USA Today's take on next year's team:
SAN DIEGO STATE
INSIDE SLANT
In his first year as San Diego State head coach in 2006, Chuck Long talked about the need to become tougher and more physical. In his second year, he's doing more than talking about it.
"We just changed some things to help them out," Long said of the Aztecs' second spring under his command. "We felt like we weren't giving them a fair chance to get better and stronger. We've changed the nutrition around, making their meal plans geared toward that. We've done some things in the offseason in terms of weight-training and conditioning that are a lot different than last year."
Long says better offseason preparation could have helped SDSU avoid some of the myriad injuries the team suffered in 2006. Along with that, he says, the coaching staff also is focusing on raising the Aztecs' mental toughness.
"We're trying to change the culture and the mind-set to the way you want it and feel it should be, getting our guys to believe in what we're doing," Long said. "Those are things that need to happen and have happened so far, but we knew that was going to be the challenge."
The biggest losses from SDSU's 3-9 campaign in 2006 are on defense. Linebacker and leading tackler Joe Martin graduated, and defensive end Antwan Applewhite has left a year early for the NFL.
Long is counting on senior defensive end Nick Osborn and junior linebacker Russell Allen to pick up the slack.
Spring practice was scheduled to start in early April.
NOTES, QUOTES
BUILDING BLOCKS: Long has reopened the competition for the starting QB job between senior Kevin O'Connell and sophomore Kevin Craft. Long says the two will share reps in practice until one clearly establishes himself as the starter. O'Connell, who tore the ligaments in the thumb of his throwing hand in the first game of last season and missed six games, is back to 100 percent. He came back to finish the season as a starter, beating Colorado State in the season finale. Craft, who started '06 as the third-string QB, won SDSU's first game under Long against Air Force in week six. "Establishing the quarterback position will go a long way to our success," said Long.
COACHING CAROUSEL: DBs coach Thom Kaumeyer left SDSU to become defensive coordinator at Tulane in the offseason, and Long replaced him with former Iowa State assistant Chris Ash. Ash, who spent six years with the Cyclones, also served as recruiting coordinator, and in 2005 his ISU secondary led the Big 12 with 22 interceptions.
SCHEDULE SITUATION: The Aztecs open the 2007 season on the road at Pac-10 schools Washington State and Arizona State. SDSU is 0-16 against Pac-10 schools since 1996. They also open their Mountain West Conference schedule with a pair of road games against Colorado State and Utah in weeks five and six, respectively.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We felt like with a couple of twists and turns, and some health, we easily could've been a 6-6 team. But we weren't; we ended up sixth in the conference. We want to get up in that upper echelon and that is our goal." Coach Chuck Long.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
STARS OF 2007: DE Nick Osborn (6-5, 260) has the athletic ability to replace the pass-rushing void left by Antwan Applewhite, who declared for the NFL draft. Osborn was fourth on the team in tackles in 2006.
LB Russell Allen (6-3, 230) is the leading candidate to move inside and replace the graduated Joe Martin. Allen was the team's second leading tackler in 2006.
RB Brandon Bornes emerged as the team's best runner at the end of last season. He runs hard between the tackles and needs to take the next step of proving he can be an every-down back.
RG Brandyn Dombrowski heads into his third year as a starter and should emerge as the anchor of an offensive line that needs to improve if the Aztecs want to finish in the top half of the conference race.
TOP NEWCOMERS: RB Brandon Sullivan, a redshirt freshman, could compete for playing time this season. He has the size (5-11, 210) to compete with Brandon Bornes as the lead running back.
RB Davon Brown also is a threat to emerge in the rotation. The 5-9, 170-pound Brown has his eyes on Atiyyah Henderson's role as the change-of-pace back.
S Travis Crawford is a junior college transfer from Pasadena (Calif.) City College who will participate in spring drills in hopes of replacing one of SDSU's departing seniors C
Brett Sturm or Reggie Grigsby C
from 2006.
LB Miles Burris was rated as one of the top 30 inside linebackers in the nation last season and could compete for playing time because of coach Chuck Long's desire to play more true freshmen this season.
ROSTER REPORT: TE Lance Louis, who missed all of the 2006 season with a torn ACL in his left knee, still is not 100 percent and won't participate in contact drills during spring practice, if he participates at all.
WR DeMarco Sampson also will miss spring training. He tore tendons in his right foot and missed all of last season and is now starting to run.
RB Lynell Hamilton, who was a 1,000-yard rusher as a true freshman but has missed parts or all of previous seasons because of injuries, may move to fullback.
QB Darren Mougey, who started one game last year before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, will play some at wide receiver and slot back this season.
