One of our young fast LBs; they, the LBs, are going to have their hands full as our DL is not one of our stronger points.

If you can't put pressure on our QB it will be tough for your defense to slow us down. Will the linebackers be blitzing?

This article probably gives you some insight into what we are going to do defensively. Will be interesting to see how they stack up against the passing attack of WSU.

SAN DIEGO ---- After starting all 12 games a year ago, leading his team in tackles and providing leadership for the defense, junior linebacker Russell Allen will be asked to do even more this season for a San Diego State football team that is switching defensive schemes and hoping to rebound from a disappointing 3-9 season.

Allen is the centerpiece of an Aztecs linebacking core that is most affected by the change from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. Allen, who started the first four games last year on the weakside before finishing on the strongside, will primarily see action as an outside linebacker and be looked upon more than ever to provide leadership.

"They've put a lot of responsibility on me, making checks; calls and adjustments are on me and the secondary," said Allen, a Vista High graduate. "I'm looking forward to getting after the quarterback, something I haven't done a lot in the past."

Allen said that his role will help other defenders to fly to the ball and make plays. He thinks the scheme is simpler and allows for the Aztecs to utilize their speed, something he feels is a strength for the team.

He said that the new defense allows defenders to come from all directions, and when properly executed, is more difficult for opposing offenses to read.

"We're an undersized team," said Bob Elliott, San Diego State's defensive coordinator. "It utilizes our personnel better.

"We're really counting on Russell Allen, he's clearly the leader on (defense). He's so smart he gets bored easy."

Elliott said that watching film of NFL teams interests the linebacking corps, which can see how a professional team handles situations and makes plays in the 3-4. Elliott said they mostly watch the Chargers and sometimes the New England Patriots.

During "Oklahoma" drills (one-on-one strength matchups between teammates in practice) on Tuesday, one player was mentioned as standing out: Allen.

"It was an exciting time for the team and went well for me," said Allen, who matched up against running back Tyler Campbell. "It creates competition, always important in sports. While we're clashing and butting heads we're coming together (as a team)."

Allen has more to live up to and embraces the challenge. Kirk Morrison, Freddie Keiaho and Matt McCoy are all former San Diego State linebackers who have gone on to be drafted in the NFL in the past three years and are making significant contributions to their respective teams.

Allen and Elliott said junior Brett Martin, sophomores Luke Laolagi and Jerry Milling and freshmen Andrew Preston, Miles Burris and Marcus Yarbrough are talented players who have the ability to continue the tradition.

"That's important to us ---- guys have pride but they've got to earn it," Elliott said. "They have high standards (at San Diego State)."

What it all boils down to for Allen is bouncing back from last year's forgettable season.

"It really crushed me," said Allen, the 2004 San Diego Section CIF Defensive Player of the Year. "3-9 is unacceptable."

Aztecs notes

Second-year head coach Chuck Long was absent for the second straight day while tending to his ailing father in Chicago. Assistant head coach Bob Elliott said Long should be gone for no more than another day or two. ... Starting QB Kevin O'Connell was missing from Saturday's practice due to a death in the family. Elliott said he was impressed with the play of backups Ryan Lindley and Kelsey Sokoloski.

Here's the 2 deep coming out of camp

Lots of true freshman as backups on the OL; could be problems if they have to play.

Vincent Brown at the R, has been turning heads ever since he set foot on campus. We might have found a good one here.

Mougey at the X also has been exceptional since we moved him out there. Last year he was our #2 qb until he got hurt. He is not only big but also very fast. A real matchup problem.

On D, we are supposed to be very fast. We'll be in a 34 this year. Of the DT, Ernie Lawson has gotten a lot of praise from Long. Oh, he's 300 lbs not 200 lbs. We'll need all the quicks we can get when you guys come to town.

Wish we were starting this week as the wait is killing us Aztec Fans, we want to see if we can hang with WSU or not.

Wow, you're not kidding about the freshman on the o line. Should be interesting to see how they play as the season wears on.

May there be many more 100 point games.

And Last I heard Neil Lomax's kid is doing pretty good at Boise, and now that Tygue is starting we should be set at QB for the next 3 years.

The Aztecs should be a fun game, I hope it it it Telivised, I wanna watch the viks win.

Also I heard that the SDSU game is sold out at Qualcom, I heard this from PSU players but did not really believe it, can one of you Aztec fans confirm?

The PSU game is also the KGB Skyshow game. KGB is a local FM station that for about 30 years has been sponsoring a state of the art fireworks display at the stadium. It is always a well attended event. I don't know if it is sold out yet, but the house will be packed the night the Vikings come to town.

No sell out. But it will be near or over 55,000 (Qualcomm seats about 78,000). That is skyshow night and the attendance is always over 55,000.

Now, if the Aztecs could beat WSU and ASU, it might be sold out.

Steve if we go 2-0 against our Pac 10 foes, then it's dinner on me at some fine steakhouse in SD.

PSU fans, after the game, I'd recommend a trolley ride down to the gaslamp quarter in downtown SD. Lots of places to eat, drink and enjoy the eye candy! I'm hoping you won't be merry that night also
