San Diego State Thread

Again a real surprise when he left; with him on one side and Allen on the other, we had a nice set of backers right there. We had a lot of kids not buying into the program last year; don't know if Schantz was tired of what he saw going on or whether he had an issue w/ the coaches himself.

Got my tickets the other day for the PSU game at Qualcom.

Plaza Level, Section 2

Looks to be around the 25 yardline or so. Those decent seats?

Oh, I'd also make a visit to the Aztecboard and leave a message for Steve Aztec or Aztec Bruce in regard to pregame festivities. Both good guys who want to see the visiting fans have a good time on their trip to SD; well as long as the good doesn't involve a PSU victory.

Lynell is still in the stable of rbs, unfortunately he never completely recovered from his horrible ankle injury at UNLV. All AZTEC fans would love to see Lynell return to the form he displayed as a true freshman.

GO AZTECS!

Plaza level is fine; once you enter the stadium just walk in to the concourse area and find your section; no escalator needed for plaza. Where are you staying in town? Mission Valley? Downtown? After the game and skyshow, I'd recommend a trolley ride downtown to the gaslamp quarter to enjoy the rest of your evening.

Here's today's article from the UT:

We're at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley.

You can catch the trolley in MV and it's a sort ride downtown to the gaslamp district for lots of restaurants, bars, Petco Park, shopping etc. Plenty of shopping in MV also.

Good location, real close to the stadium. I think you're going to enjoy your stay in San Diego, and the SkyShow is always amazing.

For anyone planning to make the trip to San Diego - SoCal is under a Severe Weather warning for later this week - we might get a bit of your weather from Thurs thru Sat... I posted a complete link under the main forum page with the following info.

Pack appropriately - and be prepared to see Southern Californians attempt to drive in the rain. It could be ugly.

And if you're planning on going sailing, bring your foulies...

From Weather.com...

...STRONG SEPTEMBER STORM POSSIBLE LATE THURSDAY THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY...

A STRONG STORM FOR SEPTEMBER MAY MOVE THROUGH SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LATE THURSDAY THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY. THIS STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE WEATHER VERY RARELY SEEN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN SEPTEMBER. THIS COULD BE THE STRONGEST MID LATITUDE SEPTEMBER STORM FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN AROUND 20 YEARS. SEPTEMBER STORMS WITH SOME SIMILARITY TO THIS STORM OCCURRED IN 1986 AND IN 1963.

THIS STORM IS CURRENTLY DEVELOPING OVER SOUTHWESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND WILL MOVE QUICKLY SOUTHWARD ALONG THE WEST COAST TO NEAR THE BAY AREA BY WEDNESDAY EVENING...THEN WILL MOVE MORE SLOWLY SOUTHWARD ALONG THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST TO NEAR POINT CONCEPTION BY EARLY THURSDAY EVENING. MOVEMENT THEN WILL BE SLOWLY EASTWARD ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY. THERE ARE STILL SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE TRACK FORECAST AND TIMING FOR THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

STRONG WINDS WILL DEVELOP IN ADVANCE OF THIS STORM IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY. THIS STORM SHOULD BRING MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY WITH COOLEST TEMPERATURES FRIDAY. DEPENDING UPON THE EVENTUAL TRACK AND TIMING OF THIS STORM... THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY HEAVY PRECIPITATION AT TIMES FROM LATE THURSDAY THROUGH LATE FRIDAY. THIS STORM WILL BE QUITE COLD FOR SEPTEMBER WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THUNDERSTORMS AND EVEN FOR SNOWFALL IN THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE 6000 FEET. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF WATERSPOUTS OVER THE COASTAL WATERS AND TORNADOES OVER ADJACENT LAND AREAS.

STAY TUNED THE NEXT FEW DAYS FOR LATER UPDATES ON THIS DEVELOPING STORM.

Look forward to a good game. Glad Lomax isn't there still, y'all had one of the highest scoring teams under him I'd ever seen. 105 points once, right?

BTW - Steve is one of the nicest and greatest but you really don't want him moving to Portland. The prices of 24 and 40 oz beers would skyrocket due to decreased supply.

Our QB, Brian White, might have been as good as Lomax if he had been under Mouse Davis for two or three years. As it is he is learning the system and nobody knows how good he will be since we can't seem to slow the rush.

I predict a close and interesting game down there, with the Aztecs holding an early lead for the win.

Here's an article on our frosh WR/KR Vincent Brown; hopefully he only has to return one kick-off on Saturday

FOOTBALL: Kick returner sparks Aztecs

Freshman Vincent Brown has taken off for SDSU as a returner, despite being recruited as a wide receiver.

Inexperience on the San Diego State football team secondary has been the dark cloud raining over the beginning of the 2007 season, resulting in two dreary losses.

Head coach Chuck Long knows his safeties and cornerbacks are trying to learn on the job, but he wishes they'd received their on-field lessons in games SDSU didn't lose by an average of 24.5 points.

While the last line of the defense can't stand the heat of its trial-by-fire, freshman kick returner and wide receiver Vincent Brown is fending off the flames with ease.

In his first-ever collegiate game against Washington State, Brown returned six kicks for 146 yards and followed that with four returns for 109 yards Saturday against Arizona State.

"We felt all along (that) he could play and produce for us this year, from day one of training camp," Long said. "(Brown's) a very mature young man. We thought he did well (and) we feel like we've upgraded our return units and he's part of that upgrade."

Not bad for a guy who initially signed with the Aztecs in large part because of his receiving pedigree.

Brown was the first SDSU oral commitment in 2007 and he was rated the No. 18 receiver prospect in California by www.scout.com.

He was Rancho Cucamonga High School's most valuable offensive player in his senior year, racking up 42 catches for 530 yards and six touchdowns, but Long saw more value in his return game than anywhere else.

"Pretty much right away they just started kicking to me and told me to see what I could do," Brown said. "You have to be ready to go whenever or wherever the coaches tell you."

Even if it means stepping out of the limelight. The wide receiver position is often coveted by younger offensive players because of its appeal to fans and its pension to draw flashy plays, but Brown is taking his position-change with a grain of salt.

He did have two receptions on Saturday, but his role-to-date primarily has been special teams. And he's okay with that.

"I'm just trying to play any part of the game I can," Brown said. "I'm doing whatever I can and I think I've had a couple of good returns where I feel like I've given the team good position.

"That's my part of the team right now so I'm doing it and trying to make the coaches happy."

At this point, it would appear he's doing just that. The Aztec coaches might be disappointed with SDSU's slow start, but they've taken notice of Brown's crafty play.
