Schedule: 2019-2020 Version

I'd really love to see basketball scheduling go the way of football scheduling; taken out of the hands of the basketball coach/coaching staff, and created by AD's and staff. These types of schedules are killing college basketball. Even committed fans of Weber State Basketball could care less. This type of home OOC, along with how the post-season tournament is now done, has drastically hurt our home attendance. If the conference season no longer matters, then the next best thing is an OOC schedule worth something. But, if you are playing no names, what is the point? Why even get excited about Weber State Basketball? Both of the major reasons for attending games is now gone. The only thing left is to go to watch basketball because I like the game of basketball. Nonetheless, why would I want to leave the comfortable confines of my home to go to the Dee to watch Bethesda when I can watch far more competitive basketball on my phone, on my couch?

What's the point of having home games? TO MAKE MONEY!! To generate revenue, build a fan base, get students connected with their university, get boosters excited, and finally, to build a budget. This OOC does none of those things. There are a lot of other options for the aforementioned consumer to spend their money on. The focus should be on how to make freaking money.

The away and neutral schedule is fine. I love the tournament the Cats are participating at in Florida (hopefully we do the same thing we did last time we were in that tournament and come home with some hardware) and of course, it is great playing the Utes at the Vivint. All three roadies are close for Wildcat fans to attend and finally, we do get USD at home, but playing those three other schools is really embarrassing.

Anybody know what happened to the Fresno St. game?

I read (probably standard-examiner) that after setting up all the in state games WSU & Fresno couldn't find a date that worked for both teams...

Not being able to come up with a date for the Fresno game caused us to scramble for a no-name team to come into the Dee. It makes this years home OOC schedule look bad. The silver lining is that Fresno will be coming next year and we will have UVU and either BYU or USU, depending on the whole Beehive Classic thing. Next year's home schedule looks much better. I'm still excited for this season. I think we will have a very competitive team. :coffee:

BYU just announced their final schedule. They get 6 D1 home games in Provo and get UNLV in a home game in SLC. So including that, it makes 7 home D1 games. We get San Diego. Yay for us. Can't wait.

 I can see that you are a glass 90% empty sort of guy.

Looking at next year, I am a glass 30% full sort of guy.

I am a WSU fan 100% of the time. :coffee:

An inside source gave me some information about this season's OOC that helps iron out some of the wrinkles. First, Fresno will be coming to Ogden next year. Both teams had open dates, but both were during the other teams finals. Neither coach wanted to play during finals week and that definitely should be applauded. These are student-athletes after all. School is extremely important.

Next, Weber had a contract with a low-level DI school to come to the Dee. That school agreed to the game, and then, once getting the contract, never followed through and signed it. By the time Weber's Coaches found out that that school had no intention in coming (probably got a better deal). That left a huge hole in our schedule. The coaches were able to contact another DI team and they thought about it, but ultimately the HC for that school decided that the distance was too far and didn't want to come out.

So, I mean, Randy was trying to get a couple more DI games at the Dee, but neither really ended up working out. Still doesn't exonerate the no-name NCCAA schools being on our schedule again.

That phrase keeps me a huge fan of Weber State as a university in a era where I become less and less interested in college sports where cheating is rampant as tutors take tests for players who are better at their sport and video-games then anything that has to do with real life and earning a degree.

It's something I believe in, and hoping this is, and remains, a mission for all WSU athletes!

I agree that academics should be first and athletic achievements should be an add-on...I am proud of Sac State for this reason...here is something you may not know (or care about) but it gives you an idea of the kind of student/athletes we have here...

SACRAMENTO STATE THE ONLY PUBLIC SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA TO EVER RECEIVE NCAA’S APR PUBLIC RECOGNITION IN MEN’S HOOPS
May 13, 2019

SACRAMENTO -- With the recent announcement of the NCAA's Public Recognition Awards, Sacramento State remains the only public university in the state of California to ever receive the award in the sport of men's basketball. The award is given annually to institutions for having Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that rank among the top 10 percent nationally.

Making the achievement even more impressive is the Hornets have now received the recognition three years in a row.

Since the start of the APR in 2004-05, only five schools in the state of California have received APR Public Recognition honors in men's basketball, and four of those are private institutions. Stanford, Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Pacific are the others.

In fact, of the five California schools to receive the award, only Stanford (six times) has more public recognitions than Sacramento State (three times).

Nationally, Sacramento State is one of just 18 of the 351 Div. I men's basketball programs to earn the award each of the last three years, and one of just two teams in the Big Sky Conference to ever receive the honor in men's basketball.

The NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team through its APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

The Hornets will see three more players - Marcus Graves, Jordan Tolbert, Kevin Hicks - graduate later this week, increasing the number of men's basketball student-athletes to receive their degrees during head coach Brian Katz's tenure (2008-pres.). Once those three walk across the stage, of the 38 Hornets that have expired their eligibility during the Katz era, 37 will have graduated.

Sacramento State currently has a team grade point average of 3.045, and has posted term grade point averages of 3.0 or better six times in the last 10 semesters.

And that includes Cal....

At the end of the day, that's what college basketball is SUPPOSED to be about -- giving kids an opportunity to play basketball while graduating with a meaningful degree. I knew Bill Evans was going to get fired at ISU because he simply didn't win enough, but he graduated all of his players. Those kids all benefited from a good education and a degree, even though they didn't win a ton of games.

Sac and Bengal, thanks for those replies. I'm pretty old-fashioned I guess, but I still believe that students on athletic scholarships get a great deal. And it's a deal they need to take full advantage of. But I also believe the universities have to be sensitive to the fact their athletes are students.

I know it's a concept that is totally unfamiliar to the minor league football programs in the P5.

i just looked at the 2019-20 schedule. we have 1 D1 home game and 0 in-state home games. i think season tkts are going to be on the rise. this is only 13 home games. there are only 2 non's at least.
