Agreed, an 0-3 start and you may as well cash in whatever chips you got left... the season would be effectively over.
And that is what annoys me so much about our scheduling... there is no contingency plan. Sure we COULD have started this year 1-1 or even 2-0, but what if we don't? Did we give any thought to the possibility that this schedule hurts our chances? Did we give any thought to the possibility that next's years schedule is atrocious?
At what cost is jeopardising your team's success not worth it? I'd say one FBS game every year, absolutely under no circumstances should there ever be more than one. Get the team willing to pay the most, hopefully a BCS school. Play at least one non-conf home game in September as a tune-up against a team you know you'll beat.
The issue I have with playing South Dakota and Idaho on the road is that it destroys our chance to get momentum in the season if we lose. Starting the season 0-2 is a virtual death sentence. And what could possibly USD or Idaho pay us to make such a thing seem reasonable? Well, we know USD didn't pay us a damn thing... so that makes it doubly terrible.
It also doesn't give us any chance of working through our rotation and work on building depth... it also keeps us from being able to keep starters healthy. There was a lot of talk in Seattle about UW's new A-B-C scheduling strategy... and there's a logical reason for playing that kind of schedule. It relates to what we do, except it might be more like A-B-Z.
