Scheduleing Update

I cant wait to hear who they are I hope we get a 1A game and 2 non-conference 1AA home & away game.

1A (PAC 10 or WAC)
1AA (Atlantic 10, Gateway, Great West & SLC) top ranked schools
We are used to playing tough schedules but it only makes our program better so I say we keep at it. But not playin 2 or more 1A schools, in exchange we play two challenging non-conference schools one from the Great West (North Dakota, South Dakota, Cal Poly, or UC Davis) and a good team from either of the Atlantic 10, Gateway, or South Land Conferences.

We need 1 large payday game to help our small althletic budget. I think it also would be wize to establish a home and way contract with one good non-conference 1AA school.

Again these are my thoughts of what I think would be good for PSU's football program. I would love to hear others opinions as well.

GO VIKS!!!!!!!

1A's don't bother me since it's who you play that really matters.

Playing Oregon, Cal, etc is not the way to go. Sure you approach those games like any other, thinking that you have a chance to win, but in reality they are scheduled losses. Playing New Mexico, Idaho, UNLV, San Diego State, etc is ok. These are games where there is a realistic chance to gain a victory.

I have seen, either on this board or on Oregonlive, where someone said we should schedule from the Great West Conference. Well a couple of these teams are probably better than the New Mexico's, etc (NDSU, Cal Poly,...). Not that PSU should fear them or not schedule them, but winning against those opponents is definitely not a certainty.

Here is how I would schedule:
1) Schedule any 1AA team that is available. If the game is played in the first 4 weeks of the season, play it on the road. If the game is later in the year, play it at home - get more home games when the school is actually in session and reduce travel once the conference season is on.

2) Schedule 1A programs that fit this mold:
a) They throw the ball more than run - decreases the pounding that the defense could take from a team like Cal or Oregon. If they do run more than pass then schedule a team that is not in the top half of their conference (probably not real good at it anyway). NO OPTION TEAMS!!! They employ cut blocks throughout their scheme - many of which push the limits of legality.
b) Defensively they are not blitz oriented - decreases the pounding that the RB's and QB's would take. Fewer full speed collisions.
c) Avoid the in-state games (UO and OSU). As much as people seem to think this is a good idea, I do not. Even if these games are winnable (by parts a & b above), they become much less so due to the fact that the "in state" idea is firmly implanted in the UO/OSU players minds. I feel that teams like EWU, UM, MSU, etc have a better chance (given equal circumstances) than PSU because the UO/OSU players don't have the "in state" motivation to fall back on.

IA teams that I would currently avoid (Pac10, WAC, MWC):

USC, Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, BSU, Hawai'i, Nevada, Fresno, BYU, Utah, TCU, Air Force

IA teams that I would currently schedule (Pac10, WAC, MWC):

Arizona, WSU, ASU, UW, Stanford, Idaho, NMSU, Utah St., La Tech, UNLV, San Diego St, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado St

PSU ADs past and future will disagree with you on scheduling UO or OSU.

If you're counting on playing Appalachian or Georgia Southern or similar teams in the playoffs, you had better catch an option offense sometime during the season so you know how to prepare for the big boys.

That doesn't change my opinion.

Tell me what you think their reasons for wanting to play UO & OSU are.

Best no-cost (or low-cost, depending on your perspective) publicity in the state of Oregon... for a sports program, anyway.

No need for plural reasons with that one.

I am not of the opinion that any publicity is good publicity.

I think these scores give PSU bad in-state publicity:
2002 - PSU 0 UO 41
2005 - PSU 14 OSU 41
2006 - PSU 12 UO 55

I think that scores like this tell people in the state of Oregon that there is a big separation between the Vikings and UO/OSU.

I think these scores give PSU good publicity:
2000 - PSU 45 Hawai'i 20
2004 - PSU 17 Fresno St 27
2005 - PSU 14 Boise St 21
2006 - PSU 17 New Mexico 6

These games allow you to tell recruits, both in and out-of-state, that PSU can compete with and sometimes beat the 1A schools.

Sad to say that most people have low regard for anything outside the BCS... and even some schools (Big East, ACC this year) within the BCS.

For instance, a news report out of Boise:

http://www.ktvb.com/news/localnews/stories/ktvbn-nov2806-BCS_skeptics.359c5e03.html

There's still evidence to be taken "out there," but I'm getting the sense that casual fans tend to associate non-BCS more with 1-AA than with 1-A, never mind the facts. Moreover, all the American love for the underdog in college athletics seems confined to March Madness. There is, in some circles, a real hate for the Boise State situation this year; I'm not sure you want to hear how these people regard Portland State. Colin Cowherd is gathering a following by discussing the difference between the have-nots (to which the Big East is prominently added) and "Big Boy Football."

If Portland State had utterly destroyed Montana this year, it would not have come close to puncturing the post-Oregon/Oklahoma discussion at that time. Simple truth. The media follows the TV RATINGS, leave no doubt about it.

Therefore, PSU is stuck grasping at the coattails of the folks down the valley.
