Scheduling

Is Weber really trying to get bigger schools to come to the Dee?

I understand we will play Utah at home and that they will be Pac12 when we play them, but this is the last time in the forseeable future that we will see Utah in the Dee. Why cant we get teams like Oregon State who played at Montana last year or Nevada or Idaho who both play at Montana this year, or Wyoming or LMU who play at Idaho State or St. Mary's who plays at CAL POLY, NMSU who plays at UNC to come play here?

Why is it Utah State is the only WAC team we ever play at home? Granted we got SJSU here, but thats just because they owe us for the BB game. And now with Utah and BYU leaving the MWC, we wont be playing any MWC teams, when was the last time we had a MWC team not named Utah or BYU at home? when was the last time we played a WCC team at home? wasnt it San Francisco like 6 years ago? Is our game vs UC Irvine a home and home?

Why cant we get teams like Gonzaga, St. Mary's, San Diego State or New Mexico, UNLV, Hawaii, Fresno State, Boise State, TULSA!!! Arizona etc to come to the Dee? Weber has a great basketball tradition, and playing Weber cant hurt thier RPI that much. Is it FEAR?

This years schedule is actually really good, but we need to have schedules like this more often. If it means 2-1's fine whatever, but get them HERE

This year's OOC (Div 1)
2 home WAC games
1 home Pac 12 and one road Pac 12
1 road WCC
1 home Summit
a road tourney at a WCC house
and a home bracketbuster

There are a lot of reasons why Weber can't get "bigger" teams to the Dee. You brought up the biggest reason, FEAR of losing, but not just to Weber to a Big Sky team. The Big Sky hasn't had the best basketball RPI/reputation for the past decade and that is a serious factor that hurts Weber. As for UM getting bigger named teams, well there could be a number of reasons behind it. They are a flagship institution, Tinkle might have connections with other area coaches, they have more money and can create guaranteed games, they don't have a strong home record. Idaho State can get anyone to play them due to their past record and that they play in a decent stadium. It is a win-win for most DI teams. Also, ISU probably set up a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deal. NMSU going to Greeley is the same thing as SJSU coming to Ogden. Return game for playing away in the Bracket Buster. I've heard that the UC Irvine game is a home and home. Coach Rahe, and his staff, call a lot of schools trying to get them to come to Weber. But without $$$, the high chances of leaving Ogden with a L, and playing away at a school that is seen to being in a Low Major conference...there really isn't a lot of incentive to get schools to come play here. Yes, Weber has a nice stadium, but that stadium isn't the friendliest place for road teams.

Looks like Weber is not the only team that struggles to get teams to play at home. Take a look at what Cal blog says about Weber game and their view of out of conference games:

Solid mid-majors: vs. UCSB (145), vs. George Washington (162), vs. Austin Peay (129), vs. Weber St. (180)

UCSB, Austin Peay and Weber St. are all relatively veteran teams with aspirations of winning their league and an NCAA tournament automatic berth. George Washington probably won't contend in the Atlantic 10, but the A-10 is just a small step below the BCS conferences and the Colonials are usually a solid team. Still, if Cal fancies themselves a Pac-12 title contender they shouldn't lose any of these games at home.

Also see the last sentence of this section:

What does it all mean? Well, if you're a season ticket holder this might be the weakest home slate in quite a long time. Not a single major conference team is coming to Haas Pavilion. On the other hand, if you like watching Cal win you should see ample reason to renew your season tickets. With seniors Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp leading this team, anything less than a perfect home run in the non-conference would be a disappointment, I think.

They have issues getting teams to play them at home as well. Original comments were posted here:

Nice find Heyoh. Scheduling games is a lot harder than any of us realize. There are a ton of factors involved in scheduling. Having Lillard on the team is just one factor that makes it difficult to schedule games.

Did Weber really end up as 180 last year? That seems awfully low. I thought Weber was in the 120s. I'm thinking whoever submitted that post got Weber and Austin Peay mixed up.

1. Money is main reason.
2. We are good at home, bigger boys can't afford a Big Sky loss
3. We don't do 2-for-1's. Purdue was a 3-for-1.

In the case of the UUs, it is not money and it is not that we wouldn't do a 2 for 1 or a 3 for 1, hell, even a 4 for 1, it is because they know that they would get their a$$s kicked. That, simply, can not happen to a PAC12 newbe. Other mid majors are good bets. You just have to keep working hard on them, and maybe we have to play at some places that we don't want to.

Tal on the RPIForecast.com site, Peay ended the season with RPI of 128, Weber was 152

Yeah, that seems about right for last sesaon. Thanks for the information Heyoh!! I still think that if Weber and Peay met last season that Weber would have mauled them pretty badly.

I don't think it will happen right away, but I have a feeling that Utah will be returning to the Dee at some point in the forseeable future. It might close to a decade, but Utah will be back. There is no way that Weber will keep playing them if they aren't willing to make a return trip every once in a while. I could see a 2 for 1 deal being worked out once he mUtes feel they are more competitive on the hardwood. Hell, if that is the case, then it might take more than a decade.

Has anyone seen the teams that are playing at St. Marrys after Thanksgiving? I saw an earlier post that had St. Marys, Jacksonville State and Weber, but no 4th team....has anyone seen an update as to the 4th?

That is what Sir WILDCAT has been trying to find out, I have been to St. Mary's and J Ville State's athletic sites and found nothing.
