Scouting Future Opponents: Cow Poly

Super Hornet 2.0

Watching the Cow Poly-Fresneck game on FS1 intermittently with Emergency! on FETV. Some things are popping out, and if CP doesn't get them fixed, we're going to walk all over them.

1. Formation design. I love the I Formation; it's my favorite formation of all time. But if you're going to have your tailback as far back as CP does (at least as far back as some teams place their Ace back in a Solo set), you're going to get stuffed. Their TB DID get stuffed on an iso play near the Fresneck goalline (the only reason he got the first down was because they were only two yards shy of the first down when the play started). By the time the TB gets going, the DL has already gotten penetration.

2. CP has a dynamic quarterback who's quite mobile, but he DOES have a limitation: he doesn't know how to look for the 30-second clock. They've already had three or four ACCEPTED delay of game penalties that have NOTHING to do with the usual modern problem of the OC taking too long to send in the play. CP took early time outs to block some penalties, but were denied others for some reason. And it's not just the quarterback; the punter got called for one, too. We could be looking at a TON of free yardage.

Anyone notice anything else?

I watched the Portland/San Joser game and that PSU team is tight. Their QB will be a force in the league. Good playmaker receiver and stout defense too. Took Sharta to the ropes.

San Joser is a mid-Big Sky team at best, they looked horrible for a FBS team playing a lowly FCS team. Too bad we didnt get them, it was very winnable.

Agreed, GCM. San Jose has played like that for decades, and even a 3-8 last-season UOP team beat them (albeit with 0:00 on the clock). I think the current Hornet squad would demolish them. Though I do have them included in my dream resurrection of the PCAA with parts of the Western Big Sky. But even in THAT league, SJSU would probably be lower tier....
