Scrimmage #1

I'll be there watching around 3:30 this afternoon. I'm particularly interested in the QB race, but also with the LB and RB competition. I'll give a short write-up afterwords. From what I understand, the o-line has some guys being held out - but we need to see some of the others step up. Also, some LB's are being held out as well.

My take away from the scrimmage: it's going to be a long, long season.

Same old stuff, man not surprised.

Can you expound on the scrimmage a little whenever you get a chance? Was there anything that could provide a glimpse of hope? QBs? Annnnyyyything??? Thanks!

Frustration abounds for me because for whatever reason this staff has a difficult time finding good special teams kickers. For whatever reason last seasons only solid kicker, Szcepenski (sp?) is not on the roster. Our field goal kickers really struggle today. Just hope and pray that one of our games does NOT come down to a game tying or game winning field goal.

I had heard some good things about a freshman walk-on kicker Marcus Combs. However I noticed that he wasn't listed on the roster.

Marques Combs is on the roster. #98 from Palisade.
Beardown - you made the scrimmage sound like a disaster, but when asked to expound, all you could come up with was a kicking problem?

I was not at the scrimmage but read Beardowns review last night and then Sam Mustaris in the Trib that sounded pretty positive ! I will go with somewhere in between !

Newsom had the first reps and was efficient. Berglund and Knipp had the most reps with Sloter a clear 4th. Berglund probably has the most leadership and Knipp is going to be the future. Knipp has a huge arm and moves well - I don't know how much he'll play this year, but I think he'll be the guy for the next 3 years.

The offensive line was very inconsistent, this is to be expected if 3 starters were out (Tribune). The running backs were pretty explosive. The defense usually will dominate in early scrimmages and they didn't dissapoint. I think this team's strenth will be it's depth on defense and i think the new offense will move the ball effectively.

Place kicking was bad, they shouldn't have run Szcepenski off! Punting was good.

What happened with that? I thought he was solid, not great.

Heard Czapenski is no longer playing, rumor is he wasn't getting help with school from the staff and is exploring other options, heard this from a few people over the past few weeks
