Scrimmage #2

Went to the scrimmage this afternoon and a couple of notes...

The Good: The offense was much better. Rubs only played about one or two series, and Brock Berglund ran a lot of snaps with the first team. I don't know if that's in order to keep Rubs from injury, or if we have a genuine QB competition. Both QB's looked pretty good. Berglund looks pretty accurate, but not as fast as Sean. On defense, I'm continually impressed with Boobie Sanders. He is very quick off the edge and will be a great asset to the already very good defense. Also...the best news of the day is that we actually made a field goal!

The Bad: Injuries. There were lots of players sitting out today. I don't know how bad some of them are, but it's never good to see that number of players on the sidelines in street clothes.

I agree. I thought the offense looked a lot better. Especially the 1st two drives with Rubes leading the team right down the field. I was especially pleased to see Holland popping some nice runs. There was a definite improvement in the play of the o-line in both the running and passing game.

I thought Brock played really well as well. Man does he throw a pretty ball and has nice mobility in the pocket. Plus he is always looking down field when he has to move rather than just taking off and running. I believe the Bears will be in solid hands with either Rubes or Berglund. I do think Rubes is pretty solidly entrenched as the starter though. I was also impressed with Jonathan Newsom's progress from the week #1 scrimmage. Made some nice plays yesterday.

I think what we are seeing with the injuries are just the wear and tear of camp and coaches playing it conservative. Doesn't sound like they have suffered any major injuries in camp. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it remains that way.

I'm getting excited for Vegas. Go Bears!

I was impressed by the play of Brock Berglund. He has a great arm and a quick release, but his speed and scrambling ability impressed me as well. Its good to know that both QBs can move the ball effectively. Its a long season and I'm sure that Brock will see some action.

Very true. When you have two mobile QB's, one is bound to be dinged up a bit and it's nice to know there's not much of a drop-off between Rubs and Berglund.

I like that having mobile QB's can open the play book a bit. The play-action looked like it will work. That is something non-existence with Lobato.
