Scrimmage Notes

GREAT Thread! This is definitely "all you can eat". Looks like the coaching staff is letting the 2 deeps sort itself out with the scrimmages. Will be interesting to see how the 2 and 3 deeps separate themselves. Lots of competition all over the field. Coaches must be completely confident that the Line 1 players are doing everything they need to in practice to be ready for the season. Speaks volumes to the mindset of these young men! GoEags!

Hey Jones thanks for the info. and well written!!
Just a note on Reilly Hennessey. Being on the west side and also a Husky football fan I listen every Saturday @ 9AM to KJR sports radio Dawgman show that they talk mostly high school recruiting. Before signing day I remember the hosts talking about Reilly Hennessey and saying he would be a great fit at both Boise State and Oregon State. Also, I can't remember exactly where I heard or read this but I remember someone saying Eastern Wa. got a real steal in getting Reilly Hennessey. It will be interesting to see how he develops.

Glad to hear Kendrick Bourne is having a good camp. I stated a while ago that Ashton Clark would be sorely missed. I loved how he could make the quick crossing grab over the middle and then make people miss. He made two Montana DB's look stupid when they over pursued and the he cut back on them for a TD. I have been wondering who is going to fill that role. I've been wondering if it could be Blair Bomber but I haven't seen enough of him. Need somebody shifty with the ability to make people miss!
FYI here are a couple of Kendrick Bourne Interview video's just to give you a feel of what they kid is like. Seems like a fun loving kid enjoying life! I wished he had red shirted last year!

go to 34:20 mark Kendrick talks about the recruiting process and his visit to Eastern.

Eagledawg,
I noticed in the Spokane Review credit was given to D'Lando Tucker for a tackle, he was not in the game, Tevin McDonald was wearing #18 for this scrimmage. Tucker is out with an injury. Our LB are going to raise cane in the Big Sky, as long as we can eliminate injuries. Team has a day off today, they will be back on the field 9 am, and 3 pm. Great Recruiting Class again. could have as many as 6-7 Recruits playing this year. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Reilly was very impressive. I think at this point, Jordan West is the standout number two. However, Hennessey has a whole lot of potential. The kid is really going to need to put on some pounds, though. I foresee a QB battle between West and Hennessey in 2016. Or even in 2015, if Vernon decides to leave early. He is a father and all.

JC Agen got married on Saturday. As being a part of the LB corp he had a couple of his teammates as best men. Many starters are giving reps to younger players with less experience. Starting this early and making a run into January is a very long season and younger players need to be able to take reps. FOE (Family Over Everything).

Thanks for the scrimmage update, but you SHUT YOUR MOUTH. :ohno:

I'm just saying it's possible. He has a kid now and if he can finish his degree sooner rather than later, he might just decide to leave college ball behind him. :chair:

I hope not. I hate when our star players leave early, selfishly of course!

Would you say leaving early has been good for the recent players that have done so? Taiwan Jones and Kaufman are who come to mind.
Jones struggled at first to find his position but has proven to baa special teams specialist and going well.
Kaufman is not playing anymore as far as I know.
Who else??

I don't think Vernon would leave early just to be in the NFL. I'm just saying, kids complicate things. People give up their dreams all the time to raise kids. If he finishes his degree this year(it's his fourth year), I can see the decision being there.

Just to clear things up, this is pure speculation. It has no foundation, just something I thought of. Sorry to make y'all sweat!

Went to the scrimmage today. It was pretty lackluster to say the least. Fairly short and entirely second or third stringers from what I could see. Here is a list of jerseys that were not padded:

Numbers: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 22, 23, 34, 39, 40, 48, 50, 57, 59, 65, 69, 70, 78, 82, 89.

A lot of young guys on our defensive line today. Pretty much all incoming freshman. I'll spare saying names, because I don't want to embarass any players. A lot of interior lineman seemed very slow off the snap. It made them very easy to block and very few won their individual battles. I am not a coach, so I do not no how to measure potential on the line, but those young men are definitely a work in progress. Defensive ends seemed to do okay, but some of them got swallowed up by blocks. Andre Lino stood out again with good penetration.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but our secondary got beat. A lot. There was lots of space for our receivers and missed tackles. A lot of this can probably be attributed to our insanely deep wide receiving corps. But if we field that kind of play this year, we are going to have a very poor showing at pass defense. Again. However, keep in mind this was the second and third string and not our starters.

There were definitely more on the defensive side of the field, but this is all I was able to jot down real quick. I was a little disappointed, because I was hoping to get a little bit of a look at what preparations we were making for SHSU, but I guess I'll just have to be surprised next week. Seeing as this was pretty much a scout scrimmage, there were many rookie mistakes, some standouts, some confused players, etc. So, my notes weren't as extensive as last week.

Jordan West, Reilly Hennessey, and Gage Gubrud got significant reps at quarterback. I showed up a little late, so I might have missed Conner Richardson getting some reps. Each one of them looked solid. Jordan had some absolutely beautiful deep throws. There were a couple of underthrows, but I see him being very fine tuned by the end of the season. I still haven't gotten to see him scramble. Reilly Hennessey also looked very solid. Great throws and this one I did get to see scramble. The kid is much faster than I anticipated. under pressure he juked a defender and took it out of bounds for a gain of seven. Gage Gubrud also had splendid throws. He had a lot of redemption for his tentativeness last week. The poor kid had to contend AGAIN with low snaps from the backup center, but was ready and recovered from them quickly. Any low snaps he scooped right up and would hurl a good ball to the wide receivers.

In the wide receiving category, all I can say is that we are insanely deep at this position. Every receiver was on fire and made the secondary look like they were boys among men. Jump balls, catches in double coverage, diving catches, one handed catches.... you name it and our receivers nailed it today.

#36 got a lot of reps at runningback. I was very surprised at the wheels this kid has. He will surprise folks next year, seemingly coming out of nowhere from our deep stable of runningbacks.

As far as our kicking game, we hit every PAT from what I saw.

RJones, I think #36 was Cody Hecker, a senior. I hope he gets some playing time this year.

You're right, just checked my roster. I guess I just assumed that since it was second string, he was younger. He handled himself really well in the scrimmage, so I would hope he gets some reps as a senior as well. EWU is a very tough team to get playing time at WR and RB this year.

Chatman went undrafted as well. Unless you are a never-before-seen talent at the FCS level, leaving early is a bad idea. Vernon is a great college quarterback--- maybe the best individual player in the state of Washington-- but he will be viewed as a huge risk in the NFL. I think he has the talent and mindset to do alright, but rushing out would be an absolutely terrible idea. I think Vernon is a little closer to the coaches and will listen to their honest opinions than, say, a Kaufman who just blindsided the staff.

One thing I noticed at the scrimmage today was the speed of the young DBs and LBs. It wasn't the cleanest scrimmage but the EAGS have a lot of young athletic talent.
