Second Scrimmage

Who's going on Saturday? I would like to meet some of the people on this forum. I had a good chat with Vic at last week's scrimmage.

I can't make it over until the spring game. Looking forward to seeing the defense pick up the pace with the new base set 4-2-5

This was my first scrimmage this year. Not sure whether was it good defense or so-so offense. Running game showed promise sometimes, and passing game was there when the passes were there. Center snaps are is a problem. Too many high snaps that disrupt the play.
I was impressed with a couple of running backs #23, and 36. Don't know names from the online roster. Quick, fast and big hitters. QB's were just OK, we've been spoiled in the past years but I am confident Baldwin and Hill will coach 'em up before this fall. Gage Gubrud really helped his stock with his mobility, accuracy, and game savvy.
Defense was disruptive the entire scrimmage.
On D I liked what I saw out of Zach Bruce and #33.Fast and always around the ball. Again I don't know the names because it seems some of the players swap jerseys.
Both lines were really going at it, lots of hustle and hitting. I think Baldwin will be happy with the intensity of the practice.

Clawman
Thanks for the scrimmage update, sounds like they got after it this week and the offense rolled much better, great to hear. Looking forward to Scrimmage next Saturday then Killian with the former O line bunch. Take care and see you and mama then. Sent from a time zone FAR AWAY, like Guam, LOL!!

clawman,
I agree with you on your observation of the Scrimmage. Two of the numbers are the Webster Brothers, one on offense, the other on Defense. #23 is Simba Webster, WR, and #33 is his Twin Brother, DB. #36 is Ashante Kindle RB, he is a redshirt from last year, and that young man is going to be in the game, he proved what he is capable of doing. Another RB # 27 Colin Cossette, from a Catholic School in the Seattle Area. He also looked very good running the ball. These young men never played a down last year. Running game is going to be Outstanding, providing we stay healthy. Remember these names: LB Alex Kacmarcik, Mac McLachlan, Kody Beckering, Kurt Calhoun, Ramsey Davis. John Kreifels, I am very much impressed with these 6 Players, none played last year, and they looked very good. Kreifels was on S/Teams some. Of course we have other that really showed up. I kept asking who was the Center, every ball was high, the QB had to jump to catch it. Our Quarterbacks are making progress, along with the Defense. One young man I have been waiting to see play since year, Keonte White, he had the only pick in the scrimmage. Must mention two on the DL Monke Sarte, and Keenan Williams, they both held their own. Don't want to write a book. Have a great Sunday. Vic Wallace p.s. Go to EWU Athletics/Football all the stats are there, great reading.

talon38,
You must not have had a tour in Guam. I was there in the late 50's, and when it rained the roads were like driving on ice. Their roads are make out of Coral, and slick like hell. Same as my home, small, everything that grows wild, are almost eatable. Last time home was in 1994, speed limits are still 35 MPH, and driving on the left, but still a beautiful Island to visit. Jase said that you and he will be at the Dinner/Dance. I got invited to sit with AD Chaves. See the crew there, with my buddy, clawman. Vic

Vic, thanks for a great update on yesterday's activities. I'm living vicariously through you until next weekend. Enjoy the week and looking forward to seeing you next week.

Hi Vic;
I saw you sitting down on the second row and was going to come say Hi but the security showed up an I though woah what did Vic do now? No just kidding.
If I had to summarize what I saw it would be two words speed and intensity.
It is going to be a very interesting year! See you Saturday.

Spokesman Review Write up (Thanks Jim)

Very interesting. I watched Gubrud at the start of fall camp and wasn't too impressed with what I saw. He must be really developing nicely, because his name is coming up very often.

clawman,
The University Police "Cadet Program", is doing a fine job. They always come to visit me at the functions. The "BIG CADET" was our long Snapper last year Cory Alcatar, from California, he wants to stay in this area, as a Criminal Justice Major. I am attempting to help him get to the right person, and some Ride Along with different Police Agencies. Plus all those beautiful young ladies from our Basketball Team, didn't want the lady to see them and she might think they were after you ;) ;) ;) I taught I smelled :o :o :o , because once I looked around they were all moved into the sun. Found out it got a little chilly once the Press Box blocked the sun going down in the western skies. Don't forget the Scrimmage next Saturday is at 2 p.m., then at 4:30 p.m. doors open for the fun until about midnight. I will sit after 8 p.m., and watch the happy ones() enjoy the dancing. Take care. Vic

I know Cory from way back when he played youth football in Yucaipa. He's a great kid. Glad to hear they didn't cart you off Vic.

G&P,
I remembered there was an article in the Spokesman Review of Cory, and how hard he had it, I took to him right away. He will make an outstanding Police Should he get what he wants. He came by a feeding I did for FB Team Players last year, ok by "Compliance Officer of EWU", and he really enjoyed being here with the rest of the Players. Must now stagger what I do, I am no longer a Spring Chicken, soon to be young 81. Hope I can continue with my good health at this age. "Thanks to the Outstanding Man Above". See you tomorrow? Vic Wallace

Thanks for the reports. The high snaps concern me. Not knocking Boatright, but I wonder if center is the right position for him, as I seem to recall him having a lot of high snaps when he backed up Butorac last year. I don't know what our other options might be, though.

I am excited to see what this new defensive system can do. As we saw the past several seasons, it doesn't matter if you can score 60 points a game, if your defense can't stop anything it doesn't matter. And we'll need a solid defense this year, too, as I expect our offense won't be nearly as explosive. The biggest thing we need from West, or whoever wins the QB1 job, is consistency. With a veteran O Line and some very capable backs, I expect our game to slow down quite a bit. That will help the D as well.

Isn't the cure for high snaps as simple as the center keeping his rear end low? If he is in a good squat the ball can not come out high.

The problem is that Boatright has always had trouble with bad snaps. It's definitely a cause for concern. However, I don't think the coaches really have any other choice for center. We have talent in the offensive line, but we lack depth and flexibility (a luxury we had last year). There just isn't anyone we can shuffle into center. Boatright is our guy and he just really needs to figure out those snaps.

I can't recall, when does the coaching staff release their preseason depth chart. I'm interested in their plans for the offensive line.

EWURanger,
I don't know if you noticed Zamora, Gall, was not in the Scrimmage, we had some young L/Backers in the game, and they look very good. We have some New DL Players, remember these names. Monike Sarte, Dylan Donahue, Jakob Stoll, Jonah Jordan, Kaleb Levao, Keenan Williams, they looked great in the Scrimmage on Sturday. All those name I mentioned didn't play any last year, and they are really competing for playing time. Hope they all stay healthy. Williams is the young man from Cheney, what I have seen of him so far, he is holding his own. Him Sarte, Donahue, Stoll, Jordan, and Levao are going to be great addition. See many of you on Saturday. Will be at practice 4 p.m. today. Vic

To All,
We are adding some great Running Backs to the team, we saw two of them in action on Saturday, Ashante Kindle, Colin Cosette, the both were in the Scrimmage Saturday, and they both ran the ball very well. They will fill in great with the others, Jabari Wilson, Jalen Moore, Samuel Mintah, plus the two Recruits coming in 2015, both are going to be good. Vic
