Shaquille Richard

Does anyone else find it odd that Richard is not going to redshirt this year?

Kid looks good, but I'm sort of a big fan of getting a year under your belt prior to burning a year of eligibility.

I was surprised to see him out on the field during the opener. However, Cory is a senior this year, so maybe Coach Burton figured that it would be better for Richard to play this season as a backup so he will have more game experience next season?

Griffin tends to get banged up. Cory is going to need a backup and Griffin is not reliably it. Lilley is not enough of a backup for a Big Sky schedule (though a great kid and great depth to have). We need Richard as an additional backup to Cory.

Shaq got 20 yards on a few carries in today's game. He just didn't have the burst through the hole like Cory does; hopefully that will come with time. I think he can do it; it will just take some more reps.

I suspect it will. The kid is a true freshman. That play in the 2nd quarter where he just about broke it would have given us 7 instead of 3. With the hole he had, I suspect that Cory would have popped that in. Like you said, hopefully it'll come with time. Kid looks good so far.

This Saturday will be Shaq's first big test. Defending Nat. Champs on the road. That should give us a good indicator of where he is right now in terms of progression.

I wouldn't say his first big test. He damn near put 100 yards on TCU.

Viks have, up to now, had to play things relatively conservatively. If you consider that Nigel & Company can recruit (and keep recruiting) quality players, then there will soon be a stock of quality RBs pushing each other as a group and for playing time individually. In such expectation, it makes sense to play and develop a true freshman into a half-season of game experience, especially if he is able to put 100 on TCU and your fine senior RB is recuperating.

I'm not a fan of slo-o-o-o-o-w development. I watched with utter despair as we kept playing "duck-the-playoffs" under Tim Walsh for nearly a decade-and-a-half while Boise State brought in Oregon's Dirk Koetter and catapulted their program to be more like Oregon's. During that same period, our program remained stagnant while bsc rivals developed more and more and more.

The Jerry Glanville experiment, I feel, set a foundation for development. In spite of not making progress in the W-column, I believe Jerry & Mouse set the table for the program and Nigel & Company. We warehoused Tim Walsh way too long. But at last now the program has an optimistic outlook for catalytic development.

Oregon's program when it was developing had the "right stuff." Boise State tapped into it and developed their own brand of it. IMO, Boise State's program is much more positive than Oregon's. Even Brent Musberger commented (and a few other announcers have agreed) how Oregon's programs has "streaks of negativity" in it. That is their bane and that is why they can be outdone. Note Cliff Harris. Fantastic player but problematic when not in uniform.

But last time was just one game. Now he needs to get used to being the every-down back that Cory was every week.

So far, so good with Shaq. He wasn't as much of a factor today as he was last week, with Willie Griffen splitting carries today. Still did a good job, though.

Shaquille Richard – Portland State, So. RB: Richard should find himself the go to guy this season in Portland. He has big shoes to fill as Connor Kavanaugh capped his senior year with over 1000 yards on the ground. Shaquille rushed for just 384 yards on 101 carries last fall, but the undersized back (5’8, 175 lbs) should come into the season hungry and ready to work.

Agreed, but I don't think it's Conner's shoes he needs to fill, but Cory's. And with the depth we will have this year at RB, we can use him very selectively and effectively.
