Should PSU join the WAC?

Good point. Rome wasn't built in a day.

One key I think is corporate dollars. Great news to hear that the luxary boxes are all sold out for the season already. Does anyone know how the box sales were for the past few seasons?

For that matter, does anyone know how much a box even costs?

PSU in the WAC would be great, but it isn't just about football. We would need to add several sports, both men's and women's, to join the WAC. That means more money for men's & women's scholarships, which would require much more successful fundraising than we have now. Plus, we would need a new basketball arena...Stott is just marginally acceptable by Big Sky standards, let alone the WAC.

Joining the WAC is a great long-term goal, but it will take more than a couple years of Glanville-inspired success on the football field to do it.

The Stott won't be a problem for PSU, because after the new student athletic center is put in, it will become a priority. As to adding sports, I think they might have to to join a bigger conference, but will PSU ever be able to support more than what it has now? I think football will be huge this year, but besides that, I doubt PSU's fan base will go to many other events until we have a new indoor arena.

There are no listed "required sports" for the WAC, at least not in their "handbook."

Historically, the members have insisted that new members have football and basketball (both sexes) and otherwise meet 1-A requirements. (6 M & 8 W or 7 M & 7 W)

The only sports in which all 9 WAC members participate:

Football
M Basketball
W Basketball
W Cross Country
Volleyball (W only)
M Golf
W Golf
W Tennis

Also, the WAC accepts affiliate members in the following sports:
Swimming (W only)
Indoor Track & Field
Outdoor Track & Field
Gymnastics
Baseball

(You have to meet sport minimum membership numbers to have an NCAA tournament automatic qualifier, hence those affiliates.)

My two cents: contributing to the football program does not help the women's sports as much as some think. It would really help to fill an arena for one of those (Volleyball seems like a PSU standard to start with, no?). The WAC does benefit from Hawai'i volleyball and Louisiana Tech women's basketball, and I argue that having such programs will free up funds for more lucrative sports.

True but list all the women’s athletic programs are successful and generate revenue? Uconn, and maybe Tenn women’s Basketball. However with the move to 1A more money is allocated to Athletics to support the increase in scholarships and athletics has to provide equal representation to women’s athletics which would increase the amount of women’s sports at PSU. Usually with a jump from 1AA to 1A athletic facilities get an upgrade or a major upgrade that helps with recruitment and overall appreciation to the program.

I can only see positives to moving to 1A. The BCS maybe corrupt but it provides millions of dollars to successful programs that would not be provided in any other NCAA competitive divisions. We have been fortunate to make money from playing 1A teams otherwise we would have tried to fund a struggling athletic budget through other avenues. Those games may have cost us a playoff birth however that is and will always be a hypothetical perspective. But even if we did play 1AA division teams and advanced to the playoffs would that have guaranteed PSU 1.2million dollars in revenue just simply because we made the playoffs? Not really.

Also the jump to 1A would give us a little more respect to in-state programs such as OSU and UO. Just because we are in 1AA alot of people think that PSU football and PSU in general is not worth there attention. I have heard this from a lot of people so that is why I know this. PSU compete at every level with OSU and UO other than football, I say we make it more competitive by joining their ranks!

It may be years before the jump is considered but I believe that it should be a goal that the University and Athletics make for 2014 (10yrs) and that PSU should meet NCAA requirements for status of applying for the jump by 2012 (5yrs). That gives Portland 5 more years to effectively make the transition.

Its time for PSU to make a statement in the State of Oregon and in the Northwest that it is no longer gonna be the step child to OSU and UO. I think PSU could eventually become a close sister school to UW. It has the Metropolitan dynamics that UW has just not the history, however does not mean that we could not become a school that is desired to the likes of UW. OHSU on the hill for Med students in transition, Lewis and Clark Law School just down the road for those future law students. PSU's Business Program is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation why not include the Urban College of Public Affairs and Maseeh College of Engineering?

This is all a matter of vision that the President, Administration, and Athletics must believe in and pursue in order to get the respect from a corrupt OUS system and to become the top tier University in the West.

One quick question? Does anyone know if the move to 1A in the WAC would cause the current PSU wrestling team to be removed from the Pac-10? If they joined the WAC as a whole, PSU wrestling would have to be independent and qualify for the National tournament by means of the Western Regional. But I'm not sure about this because Boise St. plays in the WAC but wrestles in the Pac10. Just wondering if this move to WAC 1A would change wrestling?

There should be absolutely NO effect on the wrestling team's status if the WAC is attained.

Boise State's big jump to 1-A was bolstered, at the time, by averaging about 3.5K for women's basketball in 1994 and for a few years after. I do believe that was a factor in the Big West accepting Boise State at the time, and the subsequent tapering off wasn't in full effect until after the WAC accepted Boise State.

Let me put this another way- there's a difference between "making qualifications" for 1-A (a defined set of standards) and "being attractive" for the WAC to take you (less well defined, except to say that conference mates don't want to end up bailing out new schools). It cannot be done on the cheap. WAC administrators want to know that big and small donors alike are willing to spend hard cash to help Portland State along.

There would be no change to PSU wrestling. Boise State's wrestling program is a member of the Pac 10 wrestling conference.

Back to the topic, I still think PSU has a chance to join the WAC sometime in the near future. If Idaho and USU can do it why not PSU!

If JG can get the city of portland behind PSU then it is possible

Your right, PSUVikings! JG has his work cut out but he of all people can do it! He's a great football coach with a great personality. He's the kind of coach that can bring a city together. Plus, having a coach like Mouse, who knows what it takes to win at PSU is the icing on the cake.

I'm hoping for the stands to have at the VERY least 10,000 every game, a sellout would be a dream

We are a long ways from the WAC, and personally I'm not in a big hurry to leave anyway.

How much does your home stadium seat anyways?

10,000 would be good for the first game but JG and MD can fill that stadium up eventually!

...and then Montana didn't lose a game for the rest of the season, winning the I-AA National Championship and going 15-1.

Timmy Chang, Ashley Lelie and the rest of the Warriors were tough that year. I think they put up 72 or something on BYU in 2001 (and only 30 on the Griz).
