SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team signed 17 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today by Hornet head coach Marshall Sperbeck. The group is comprised of five players who joined the team at the start of the semester and 12 who will enter the University in the fall.
“I am very excited about this class,“ Spebeck said. “We beat some (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools on some guys and our staff worked very hard to fill our needs. There are a lot of players who can help us immediately.”
Sperbeck’s commitment to recruiting Northern California is evident as 12 players hail from cities within 90 miles of Sacramento. That list includes offensive lineman Clint Lessard (Rocklin HS/Sierra JC), quarterback Dominic Carmazzi (Jesuit HS), defensive back Michael Casper (Valley HS/Mendocino JC), offensive lineman Nate Doverspike (Del Campo HS), defensive back Johnny Feaster (Vacaville HS), and defensive lineman Maika Maumau (Franklin HS of Elk Grove).
Sacramento State bolstered its defense with the signing of 10 players. The midyear group is comprised of defensive linemen Derek Kosub (a transfer from Washington) and Ryan Shinar (a transfer from Golden West JC). In the fall, the team will welcome Casper, Feaster, Maumau, defensive backs Deionte Gordon, Jeff Johnson and Michael Peters and defensive linemen Brian McKeon and Brent Turner.
“We knew we had to fill some spots up front and in the secondary,“ Sperbeck said. “The two midyear players should be able to step in quickly and help out on the line. We also have five defensive backs that will all have a chance to play in the upcoming season.”
The offense had three additions at the start of the semester with offensive linemen Peter Lenz and Lessard as well as quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson (a UCLA transfer who will be a sophomore for the 2008 season).
Carmazzi, who’s family has a long history of football in Sacramento, will add depth to the quarterback position which also has returners Jason Smith and Duncan White as well as Bethel-Thompson. Doverspike and Central Catholic’s Clay DePauw will both play on the line and Concord’s Kevin Galindo enters as a tight end.
“We definetely added depth at quarterback,” Sperbeck said. “McLeod is a guy that is capable of coming in and playing right away while Dominic sets us up for the future.”

I playoffs…had four 100-yard rushing games as a senior, including 179 and three touchdowns against Jesuit in the first round of the playoffs…averaged 8.0 yards per carry and 86.3 yards per game while splitting time with Terrance Dailey (committed to Washington) in the backfield…had at least one tackle in each of his 12 games in 2007…had a season-high seven stops in three games…also served as the team’s punter…rushed for 561 yards on 57 carries (9.67 per attempt) as a junior…scored eight touchdowns that season…finished his junior season with 61 total tackles and three interceptions.

Coach had an announcement party tonight at the Alumni Center for the QB Club and other Stinger Athletic Assoc. folks. He wanted to wait to announce this year at the party instead of doing what the school did last year when it announced on the website as letters were faxed in. I like that in a way. Build it up all day and then go celebrate. I am SO stoked about this year's class. Bring on Humboldt State on Aug. 30 at Hornet Stadium!!

3. Mostly HS kids - love to have them for 4 years

1. Really needed 1 or 2 WR's - big issue next year!
2. Need RB depth - had issues with injuries last year
3. Is this class any different from what Mooshagian brought in?
4. Why did we lose so many players from the area to other BSC schools - especially ones rated higher than those Sperbeck signed?
5. No Safeties - you lose your two starters and you don't sign one?

Its not unusual for D1AA schools to announce a few guys after signing day in addition to the ones announced on signing day. Some kids are holding out for better deals and don't get them, so then finally go D1AA. I expect we pick up a few more within the next week or so. Just a hunch though, I don't have any insider information.

Like someone else mentioned, we'll probably see some stragglers signing on in the next couple of months at the WR/S position.
Overall I'm still quite pleased with Sperbeck's efforts so far as Head Coach. The record was 3-8 last year, but I know for a fact there were some major program culture shifts on and off the field in the right direction.
I don't think 5-7 or 6-6 is out of the realm of possiblity this year. Beat Humbolt, win a thriller over Davis, and take all of our home BSC games, we're lookin' good.

I'm VERY happy we got Carmazzi. However, I'm VERY miffed that there was no mention of Gio's having played for UOP. He was one spot ahead of me on the depth chart, just behind former Ravens assistant coach John Fassel.

So far I am pretty pleased with this class. It looks like a lot of needs have been filled, although I would have like to seen a little help at WR. Hopefully we may pick up some stagglers over the next few weeks, maybe even some more FBS players when they start to figure out the depth charts. Does anyone know when the schedule will be released?

Anyone have an idea why we haven't seen additional signings? I'm also a little concerned about Sperbeck signing some kids that never end up playing. Last year two wide receivers and one OL from SoCal were signed but they never showed up. This year we've already seen Cory Dehl announced as signed but he wasn't added to the list of the '08 class. Anyone have insight?
